I played Progear at 5 frames with a big smile on my face 😬 haha. Just as a side note, the Switch did have some games running around 3 frames although it's not common. Ikaruga is one and the games on the M2 Aleste collection were another. That was using a Joycon though which is the fastest response as you know. The universal board, interestingly enough, I tested in my Switch controllers video a while back has identical results both wired and wireless. I can't say why, but I get identical results no matter how often I test it both ways. It also tests at 1 frame slower than a Joycon, so testing with a universal board will normally give you a result a frame higher than with the Joycon. It was good seeing this though and thank for you the shout out. I only played Progear for the first time ever on this collection so I have no point of reference aside from really enjoying it. It felt a lot like Deathsmiles to me, in that the difficulty was as fair as Cave gets and a lot of less skilled bullet hell players can still enjoy it. I'll be playing it more for sure.

Yeah isn t switch lag testing delightful ha. I approach these arcade ports as switch games and not so much as the real arcade experience and with this mentality I can not feel too sorry about the two frames added by the hardware switch because basically I don't expect true arcade performance. For this reason I've been playing with it for hours and hours (with hori Rap V which I think has one frame less anyway?) And I'm very happy with this release. Climbing the charts is an orgasm. I am consoled to think, however, that maybe a new switch revision (if it ever happens) can solve the basic problem of the two added frames because it would be a general benefit.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's great you are playing the leaderboards! Yes, I am really hoping a new switch revision addresses and fixes the lag issues of the console, that would be fantastic! @amerigocosta74523 жыл бұрын
So, if my understanding is correct, you can try and tweak your Switch to remove frames via runahead but still the computational power required to emulate all those parallel instances of the game logic is going to still add frames of lag. That's pretty much what happens when you try and use runahead on low power devices, which I guess the Switch can be considered to be at this point. On a positive note, it just means that the dreaded input lag is going to be pretty much a non problem pretty soon (and it is already, with a very powerful PC, as you showed with the 360 emulation review). I guess we will see what happens with games targeting the current gen consoles.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
Not quiet. So the switch does have the cpu power to render the run ahead in one frame, but something within the OS or hardware is adding 2 extra frames of lag. What that is I m not totally sure but I am making a video exploring it here very soon

Great video. Did you see how Studio Mudprints were hit with a copyright claim by Capcom? Regarding input lag, data is king. I play my “key” shmups on my 360, and decided to go with Switch for new, physical releases. For example, I have Ikaruga on DC, 360, and Switch. I’ll play DC on my CRT and possibly use the 360, but the Switch is portable. I decided to get the Aleste collection on Switch mainly due to its Game Gear type portability. My problem with my PS4 is that for some reason I don’t trust it. It’s EOL now and physical media seems to be on the way out. But perhaps I’m being an idiot, buying physical for a handheld? I just see less value in digital. I should probably just get over it and Switch (haha) over to PS4, but I do love my flip grip! I have cotton on the way for Switch, again, but perhaps I should move over to PS4 for future STG releases.

So I checked this out actually (gonna do a whole video on this soon) and it turned out that the handheld lag was the same as the lag I showed in the video because of the display of the handheld. It's kinda complicated but it goes like this - playing in handheld removes the docked control lag, but introduces display lag. Playing on dock into a CRT removes the display lag, but introduces control lag ha. If retroarch allows you to play with a guaranteed 1 frame of lag on a computer and the most responsive console port tops at 4, emulation has a massive point over paid for rereleases.

I've got the Capcom Home Arcade, and I'd be really interested to see how well these new ROMs stack up against the ones on the CHA. It'd also be interesting to see what latency you get using this new collection on the switch with an arcade stick as compared with the CHA.

@@TheElectricUnderground It sometimes goes on sale for under €100 (I'm from Europe). I got mine last year off Amazon and I couldn't believe they were that cheap when compared to what they were originally. @Jbrodack3 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine a undocked switch with connected joycon would have least possible lag. Since that would use internal screen instead of an external potentially adding lag as well as connected controller with no wireless signal adding lag and may be better than even USB. But that's just a guess. Look forward to more analysis.

When is Nintendo going to stop focusing on gimmicks and just making good consoles? Their last normal (and I would say good) console was the GameCube (which is also one of the best-looking consoles ever made, at least for my preferences). That was almost 20 years ago. I'm actually shocked that there isn't a version of the Switch that is just a normal (and cheaper) console yet, considering that less than three years after the 3DS was released, the 2DS was already a thing and that was the 3DS without the gimmick. I was predicting that the Switch would have a similar version (the Nintendo Switchless), and I assumed that it already existed, but I guess not. I hope they do it at some point and that it's less laggy. It would also solve the problem of the tablet thing sticking out of the dock to the point that some of the screen is unprotected, which drives me insane. Looks so wrong, like the tablet and the dock weren't made for each other and you got the wrong model of one of them. Bothers me way more than it probably should. The whole thing looks like a bad idea in general, especially coming from the company that had just made a portable system that scratches its own screen when it's closed (I have a 3DS, and it looks awful, while my PSP looks perfect). Just think a little more, Nintendo. And test things before selling them. Make the Nintendo GameCube 2. Or Nintendo Cubed (Nintendo³). Eventually, in the distant future, the Nintendo 128, the first 128-bit console (unless Atari comes back and makes the Atari Liger), so they can tell my skeleton to do the math.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
yes I miss the cube days of the nintendo brand, one of my favorite consoles. I honestly don't know what nintendo is going to do moving forward, except focus on handhelds I guess (which is essentially what the switch is). I was really hoping sony were going to release a follow up to the vita at some point, but it looks like they have given up on handhelds sadly. Switch is a definite improvement over the wii series, but when it comes down to it the performance issues really hold it back as a console.
@censoredterminalautism40733 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground The Switch is kind of a combination of home and portable consoles. I see that as kind of a defeat for Nintendo too. They used to do both successfully. Now they have all of their eggs in one basket. If they keep doing things this way and they make another huge mistake like the Wii U, it will be much worse because there will be no 3DS there to save them. They had two chances to get something right every generation, but with this business model, they only have one. Experimenting with gimmicks that they will never perfect will be a lot more dangerous now. When you only have one chance, you have to be more conservative. Sony giving up on handhelds does make more sense, though, because they were never all that successful anyway. Still, more competition is always good. I don't regret buying my PSP at all. It was dirt cheap (and I bet that the Vita can be pretty cheap too, so I may end up getting one eventually) and it works well, and I could even use it to play PS1 games. And it had its own version of some PS1 games that were worth playing, like the second Star Ocean (with less annoying voices) and Final Fantasy Tactics (with the Dark Knight and Onion Knight classes and some extra characters like Balthier from FF12 and Luso from Tactics A2, but with slowdown issues, except that I patched that problem away so not really). No complaints there. Except that the plastic has a mirror finish. I don't like that in most places, but it's especially bad on anything portable. It always looks dirty unless you clean it very well and then keep it in your closet and never touch it.
@censoredterminalautism40733 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground They did change the character art in Star Ocean, though. That's the bad thing about that version. They made it generic. Kinda like how Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow switches to a really generic style while Aria of Sorrow had that distinct Castlevania look.
@censoredterminalautism40733 жыл бұрын
@@seanmcbay My point there is that Nintendo used to make two separate systems. One portable and one home console. Two chances for disaster, but also two chances for success (and they always got the portables right, because they didn't do anything too crazy with them). Back in the mid 2000s, they had the Wii and the DS at the same time, both very successful. Now Nintendo only has one system and one chance. They basically gave up on dedicated home consoles. That's the defeat that I'm talking about. It's not about the Switch being a failure, it's about them making huge mistakes and giving up on their previous business model. If they keep doing this, they better not mess up because they only have one chance now. When the Wii U failed, they still had the 3DS to save them. If they keep making only one system, crazy gimmicks will be a lot riskier than they were in the past.

The stuttering and fps drops (seems like frame skipping ) is driving me crazy. They add all these bells and whistles; but at the end of the day I just want a good emulation. No wonder Chinese devices still sell. If they don't fix this soon; I'm going to get an At Games legends arcade Core and stop buying these compilations.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
The way the game emulates slowdown is kinda strange. I m not sure why it has the sort of chop effect rather than a smooth slowdown
@enriquepinero7073 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground I'm thinking the arcade front end (which apparently uses the RE Engine) still runs in the background; even if you turn it off and it may be an issue with the way the wi fi is set up to constantly search and send date (even if it is off). The wi-fi issues caused the same kind of choppy stuttering in the Capcom arcade arcade sticks they released last year (with the built in games). They did eventual patch and fix the issues; but I hope they do the same here. Kind of tired of buying their collections that always has some features missing or issue in emulation. While I could just buy any of the hundreds of emulation devices out there in the market; or come up with some makeshift solution on my own; I really just want these games to be officially preserved on the Switch at the best possible quality; as it is such a versatile console.

They are actually around. They're just not very common, at least not in the West (seriously, go to Japan and you will be in arcade heaven). But, I know of at least a couple places to play arcade games. One is an unapologetic retro arcade, and the other is a "fun park" type place where there are all sorts of games to entertain people (mostly aimed at children). Both are about an hour's drive away (give or take) from me in different directions, mind you, but it's worth going. The only uncertainty is whether they survived the veritable business nuke that is the pandemic. It will be interesting to see what survived in the coming months.
