Purchased SteelAssault on sale yesterday night thanks to your video: I was ingloriously kicked in the butt and cannot wait to get better. I have to say: yours is the only seriously in-depth review of the game I found. Others are on the lines "pixel art", "arcade nostalgia" "here is what you can do". Meanwhile you explained that the vibrant and saturated colors not only are nice to look but make the screen very readable even in the most chaotic moments, that you are required to master your available moves by the level design and the game was made with a not superficial understanding of what makes an arcade both challenging and fun. Great review for an even greater game.

I bought the game thanks to your video. Arcade platformer perfection indeed! It has everything I want in my videogames (with the exception of it not having HD rumble support): no loading time, intense linear action, no boring walking and "exploration" fillers, skippable cut scenes, gorgeous pixel art, crunchy explosions, adjustable difficulty with checkpoints, great music and sound effects, excellent control, very low MB footprint size and high replay value thanks to its short length that's perfect for 1 playthrough when I have time to spare. I haven't had this much fun in a platformer since Megaman X4. On my Switch, this game ranks up there with Fight n Rage, Nuclear Throne and Atomik: RunGunJumpGun. I read that a patch will be available soon to address the frame rate issues on the Switch. Congrats to the devs and Tribute Games!

Aw yeah, been looking forward to this game since the demo and it's exactly what I wanted! Really does feel like an evolution of Castlevania's (or Super CV's) timing based gameplay where every attack has meaning and impact. Getting pure arcadey games this pretty AND well designed is a real treat. I'm glad they went that route, hope it didn't hurt profitability too much. That said I can kinda sympathize with people calling it too short. The length in minutes is perfect, but the game has so many different enemies/ideas/set pieces that it really crams them in. A second loop/higher difficulty with remixed level design would be awesome.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
I blame metal slug 3 for being so long ;-) This is a really interesting topic where I felt it was refreshing to play a game that was pretty much all killer and won't come down to 2 hour long runs when I go for the arcade mode clear ha. That being said I do think that stage 5 could have been better if they swapped out the flying ship section for a more straightforward and intense platforming section, i think if they had a longer more challenging stage 5 that would have been a good fit. The last two bosses are really fun though!

Although there are many great things about this game. I felt quite disappointed on how the hook wasnt integrated a lot in all the levels and bosses. So when you do have to use it again it feels kinda out of place, wish its usage was allowed basically more so the player could be more free and expressive with it (and enemies more designed around it) most of the levels and bosses forget this mechanic is around. Still a good game but expected more from it after your review.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
One thing about the hook that I didn't pick up on until I started doing my arcade 1cc routing (very close to the clear now) is that when you launch the hook horizontally, even if nothing is there, you get a nice juicy air stall. This air stall is very useful and you end up using it a lot, so maybe give that a try. Also the hook shot comes into play big time on the final boss if you are trying to not take damage, so I think the mechanic shines more when you go for no damage runs
@darthrobo55163 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground yeah the little air stall I knew and used, which is a nice little thing. And Indeed only the last Boss feels like its an integrate part which highlighted for me how underused it was in the other encounters/levels as it is the defining mechanic of the game, so I expected this to become more integrated and challenging as you go along. But its there and then gone and occasionally pops up. Im doing runs myself too on the higher difficulties now clocking around 32 min. Still a fun game! Just not as tightly designed as for example Cybershadow where all the mechanics are interwoven all the time.

@carlcueto26893 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground The devs took out an entire shoot em up boss section as well as cut out most of the train battle, which in total would have been an additional 5-8 minutes. I think making the game shorter was the right decision when you consider how tight and cohesive the final product is. It seems that they wanted players to enjoy every second of a 24-min run and avoid inserting any annoying fillers.

If the game is considered "too short", does that mean the players can simply "credit feed" on home games without putting much thought? I remember that you had an interview with the developer behind Space Moth DX and mentioned the importance of anti-credit feeding such as continue limits and level progress requirements, with the latter being done with Jamestown plus. Or maybe the game itself would have pushed the difficulty slightly higher to make the players challenge themselves longer.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I talked about this a bit but forgot to include it in the final cut of the video, but what's great is that there is a nice selection of difficulty modes and arcade mode is no joke! You won't be able to credit feed through arcade mode and since the game is about 30 min or so you can actually do a full run in a reasonable time frame, rather then a 2 hour slog like streets of rage 4 ha.

I could see that, though I personally like this game a good deal more then gunlord. I think the boss and level design is more focused and on point, but they do have a similar style for sure.

I had the same issue where the final boss attacked so far off screen and I was just unable to do anything except die. I hope it gets patched soon. Amazing game very clearly inspired by Gunstar Heroes.

Yeah the graphics and ost are hella impressive, they really push the game to the next level in terms of appeal.

Finished Steel Assault. It's okay, beautiful game but pretty barebones. Like even the arcade mode is basically a 1CC only mode (no feeding). And Normal mode is unlimited continues. No other options. No other difficulties I guess unless I 1CC arcade? One powerup, no other weapons, no hidden secrets, NO SCORING... So not a lot to do really. No training modes or stage training. It's a very barebones game. I don't know if it's worth the $15 tbh... I would say it's more like $5. Extremely quality production values but very barebones to me. I got 2 hours out of it but I don't think I want to try to 1CC it as it is all memorization and execution. Nothing cool or interesting to do.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
So it does have an expert mode, which is a nice middle ground between normal mode and arcade mode. So there is a bit more underneath the surface once you start grinding for arcade 1cc (finally got it last night!). For example there is a weapons system with the shield and lightning powerups where they slowly decay over time but if you melee kill enemies you will get more meter for these powerups, this actually plays into the routing in the higher difficulty modes. You can also use a checkpoint system in normal mode, so if you want to route that will be really helpful to practice with. I do think a proper stage select and training mode would be nice though!
@AKTANEARCADE3 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground good to know these things! I didnt really feel compelled to go through 1cc because sometimes I died in some weird grapple sections that I would have to practice lol

Sorry to be that nerd but 🙆 .. I think what you are calling a 90° angle is actually more like a 45° angle. And the tether that runs parrallel to the ground is a 90° angle. With the visuals i still understood what you meant. Just thought you might like to know if such a matter were to come up again for a video. You just seem like the type thatd like to get that stuff right.✌️

Extremely short and bare bones game with no collectibles or secrets. That being said it looks, sounds and plays great. 3.8 out of 5. When compared to a game like Huntdown this one really falls flat.
@TheElectricUnderground3 жыл бұрын
I think the style of game from something like hunt down is pretty different even though they have some similar elements. Steel Assault def aims much more towards an arcade style so a single playthrough would be just the beginning, you ll have a lot to work with if you aim for an arcade mode clear as the depth and design of the game will open up more with repeated play throughs. Whereas a game like hunt down will start to feel more drawn out on repeated play throughs. Streets of rage 4 has this problem where on first playthrough the game is awesome, but as you repeat and go for high difficulty clears, there are obvious sections of bloat that become wearing
