Now that’s how you modernize an elevator! Leave the original panel alone and put the new call buttons outside

Exactly true. US Elevators are not known for aging well or lasting a long time, because they were cheaply made, and the parts technology are obsolete. Even by the standards of 20 to 25 years ago, they were already obsolete. No wonder Thyssen and Krupp scrapped the US platform and went with the Dover platform. It is also no wonder that many of these elevators are becoming a thing of the past and are getting modernized as well.
