Watch today's Zero Punctuation episode on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries & Wattam - www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/mechwarrior-5-mercenaries-wattam-zero-punctuation/ Edit: Yes, the video was published accidentally last week. ZP videos are always released first on the website, then the week after on KZbin. It was a mistake, and if I had left it up it would have messed with our whole schedule as there'd be no ZP for you today on KZbin.

On his livestream of the game, he accidentally whacked his pet cat. I think that’s where the inspiration came from. Edit: Some people are saying it was his pet dog, not cat. That would line up with a past video of his where he said “I have a small dog now”. So yeah it’s probably a dog, but I don’t know for sure. I just remember him mentioning in the stream that he whacked his cat.

I feel the true culmination of VR games should be an officially licensed Matrix game set between the first and second films, perhaps a collaboration by Valve and Remedy (each handling the technical aspects they're more familiar with), and with CD Projekt Red and Obsidian working together to write the story and design the (custom) character progression system.

There's this thing called an S-curve. Slow ramp up followed by a nearly vertical rise, then a taper-off. The internet as a whole had one, electric cars might be about to demonstrate the process, and VR *might* have a curve like that coming if the price tag on the hardware comes down far enough that it starts becoming as common as the old light gun was with the NES. The processing power needed to run the things seems to be available on the current generation of consoles, not that this justifies the wholesale abandoning of an entire generation of gaming history every few years when a new weirdly-shaped bit of plastic with an incremented number and an alarming price tag rolls out.

YUP, thats my PC setup, big screen tv, and uh... yeah VR is still different...because, and i know this sounds weird, two things can do two things. Regular gaming is great for some things, but as fun as it is, physically taking cover and reloading the weapon, and actually aiming is an entirely different experience, and it cannot be replicated in a standard environment. That doesnt make one better then the other, it makes them different. and thats fine, you can like more then one thing, or you can hate one of the two things. or hate both things.

I will say virtual reality is much more accessible now than it was. Like a Rift S is $400, that's about the cost of a new console. (give or take) Yes, I'm aware you need to have a reasonably good computer but if you consider yourself a PC Gamer you probably already have one. (at least one that might be able to give a moderately good experience) I would say what you get from VR is far superior to what you might get from buying a new console. It doesn't cost $1,000 or even $600, to get a good experience these days. (please don't rip me apart)

Those last 30 seconds sound like the prologue of Ready Player One. Also, all the comments comparing this to HHH when it reminds me of Robo Recall.

VR hardware and software as well as computer hardware evolve slowly but Boneworks and Half-Life: Alyx are steps in the right direction.

This ZP put me in mind of the Spec Ops: The Line review from the far-ago-times 555 best one in a while.

I only got into half life because I decided to see what a cybercafe was. First thing I see is a group of dudes laughing their asses off while their other friend vaporizes them with the ghostbusters laser in multiplayer. Functionally, It's just the lightning gun from quake, but everything about it seemed cooler, and I knew is that all I wanted to be the guy with the ghostbusters laser.

All those problems you listed (besides cost) are solved by the oculus quest.

When compared to the gun depth of Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand grenades, this game's firearms feel like running around with nerf blasters.

I really think you should review Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades. It's like Boneworks, but less "story" but way more guns (250+) but take and hold, is a great challenge

I don't want a Ghostbuster Lazer... I want some kind of adrenaline needle or super serum that lets you temporarily bodyslam suplex and chokeslam enemies .
