I have an old GEC refrigerator. Its been in the family since the 50's. If you find you have to defrost it regularly there's a couple of tings you can do to improve the situation. Firstly if its in a kitchen with high use a vented hood humidity when cooking. Check the door seal, even tiny gaps in the door seal will allow humid air to get it. I've modified my fridge door seal to a modern magnetic seal. Way less defrosting required and it uses way less power!

@GIboy1990 And before I moved I had the same fridge for over 15 years, what's important is the statistics, not the anecdotes. Most modern fridges are designed to last 10-20 years. Sure, you might keep one of these older ones running longer, but then you might also get lucky with a modern one and keep it running 30 or 40 years. And you don't have to take everything out and defrost it nearly as often.

Back when they made things to last. It's crazy to me that almost zero companies nowadays make a reputation by being reliable and long lasting. Imagine a car advert that explained that their car is reliable? I heard in my business studies A level that planned obsolescence is out of control especially with cars. They have components that are designed to fail after 3 months of driving which is why now it's almost better to buy a used car because most things that will go wrong already have and have been fixed.

Its R-22 likely as that was discovered in the 30’s I believe and quite common by the 50’s. R-22 while phased out now was the successor to more deadly refrigerants like methane. Ammonia actually has a low global warming potential but is unfortunately quite toxic in confined spaces. Refrigerants prior to r-22 we’re often times explosive and that’s why Ice truck services were popular since it was considered a fire hazard to have those machines in a home. Up until recently r-290 was illegal to use in any refrigeration process. R-290 is actually propane and requires special hoses and procedures to work with but I generally don’t feel like I’m working on live ordinance when making a repair. I’m a mechanical contractor if it wasn’t obvious and if I made a mistake the internet will correct me assuredly.
@OlaviMurto
@OlaviMurto 11 ай бұрын
@@Elbert_Heather Thanks for the addition! Though I don't understand the reference to ammonia, since R-22 seems to be otherwise known as Chlorodifluoromethane, HCFC-22, which is an ozone depleting gas, and also known as Freon like I said. On the other hand to my knowledge regular methane isn't an ozone risk, but that is a strong greenhouse gas, and dangerous to breathe.

My grandparents had something like that, and when we were small we used to take spoons and cups to those huge chunks of frost and scrape and eat them! I loved the taste lol

As a kid, I used to enjoy breaking off ice chunks when we would defrost our fridge. 😃

The design of these old fridges are so much more pleasant to look at... If the same design and would return somehow with some more modern and energy efficient, it would definetly find it's place in my kitchen

I find it really interesting how old refrigerators like this have much more well thought out draw design. I'm sure it's partly due to the fact that back in the day these things were luxuries that you took pride in, like a car, but it's still interesting to see how the user experience design of these machines has actually gone backwards.
