Hi! Geologist here :) Sapphire is the gem-quality name for the mineral corundum, which is a 9 on the mohs hardness scale. "Normal" glass is usually just melted amorphous silicon dioxide (aka quartz), which has a mohs hardness of 7 or even lower if impure. So now ya know! :)

This. I have a very difficult time recommending laptops since the addition of iPad trackpad support. The iPad eliminates the frequent contact switching between the phone/laptop combo described in this video. If anything, an ipad + Mac mini combo is probably similarly priced to a Mac pro 16 if the current state of ipad external monitor support drives you nuts and you desire full apple ecosystem. Personally i use ipad/magic kb combo + a built win10 desktop rig (also like shown in video) as gaming is a hobby. I remote into the desktop (which supports full monitor resolution) giving quick access to ipad apps and slideover while win10 is occupying monitor. Shadow PC continues to make strides as well for desktop OS needs at very reasonable prices (just doesn’t allow VMs to run inside).

As a senior in high school looking to be a computer science major in college, I wanted to say that this was super helpful! Im always one to prioritize having "high-end stuff" rather than the cheapest option. I went ahead and purchased the base model 16" mbp and I LOVE IT. I was a little worried about not spec-ing it out more but since I don't do much high res video editing I've never encountered a problem with the ram or storage. I'm also probably thinking of buying the new 12 pro max when it comes out and possibly the 2021 ipad pro - my idea is to use my laptop for everything coding and try to take most of my notes on the iPad. Love your channel Gary!

Hey Dad! I love your videos and I’m most of the time very aligned with your opinions. In this video you mentioned that checking your watch on meetings is fine, checking your phone is not. I have an opposite experience. Everyone is used to phones on meetings and whenever you look at them is fine for everyone. However checking your watch... it suggests that you are checking the time (and not a notification) and makes the meeting partner instantly nervous. At least that is my experience here in Europe. Keep on doing your videos, they are awesome! 👍

Right now I am using the 2018 iPad Pro (together with regular AirPods and waiting for that iPhone 12 Mini or perhaps the iPhone 12 Pro since I broke my previous iPhone a few weeks ago) and I totally share your love for the iPad - it is such a great and versatile tool that I think you cannot fully appreciate until you have actually used it yourself. The reason why I would still like to have an iMac to go with it though is because there are still some (albeit very few) essential things that you cannot do on the iPad yet.

In the smart watch category, I use a Garmin fēnix 5X Plus. Slightly different usage profile-I get 2-3 *weeks* of battery life on a charge (or well over a day with GPS running) and water resistance to 10 ATM (over 300' depth), but no touch screen-with a complete array of sensors and capabilities, including notifications. I'm not saying the Garmin is "better" than Apple Watch (though it is for me), but noting that Apple and Android aren't the only watch OSes out there for folks who need a more durable and lasting smart watch without sacrificing performance.

The 13" MacBook Pro is a better laptop for power, performance, & portability especially if you're a college student. I've got a ton of experience with both the air pods pro and Sony wf1000xm3s. for future reference, sapphire glass is just that, glass made out of synthetic sapphire. Sapphire is the second hardest mineral and therefore is supposed to provide a very strong glass that is stronger than corning's gorilla glass. I believe the sapphire glass is not as strong as a sapphire that you pull out of the ground, but Apple has been developing this for several years now. They have a facility that they opened a while back that is working on improving this. The rumor a long time ago was they were trying to make it affordable enough to put on an iPhone, but that clearly has not happened.

I would agree. Apple's base level prices are competitive compared to similarly specced Windows equivalents. But yeah, they do hit you when you start upgrading stuff like RAM and storage. To be fair to Apple though, other manufacturers can be just as bad with upgrades and less Windows laptops are now allowing user replaceable upgrades as well. You also won't get most of that upgrade cost back when selling either. You will probably not get a lot more for a fully specced MacBook Pro than you would the entry level. Although I don't think the "Apple tax" is a huge thing anymore and sometimes it is non-existent.
@00SNIVY004 жыл бұрын
Storage wise, the included storage might be faster *maybe* but getting an external drive would save quite a bit. Doubling from 1TB to 2TB (+1TB) is $400 on Apple's website? You could likely get an Intel 660p 2TB (+2TB) for about $250 or $300 if you don't mind having an external drive. Storage is the easiest thing to get externally for a computer. On a phone it's kinda different since you can't exactly run applications and whatnot from an external drive. I'd agree that there probably is an Apple tax when it comes to upgrading things, storage gets a bit expensive in phones and computers when you're upgrading through them.

Apple products are fairly reasonably priced for the hardware you get, and the build quality makes up for some shortfalls in specs. I think the main downside is macOS is really underdeveloped when compared to its competition at this time and that saddens me. Going with an Apple Product has a hidden cost of the accessories (iPads) and dongles (MacBooks) you have to get for them to be productive, and the Apple Care you pretty much have to get due to the total lack of reparability in the devices. I use a MacBook Pro 13 for my daily work (mostly coding and programming), a $80 apple keyboard, $100 MX3 mouse, and a $300 dock that supports dual monitors as macOS lacks Display Port MST to use any of the cheaper docks. My iPad (LTE) is my travel "computer", and I pack an Apple Keyboard for emails and stuff along with a Smart Cover. I plan on upgrading my iPad soon and getting a magic keyboard, so I will be in over $500 as I cannot make it with 32GB of storage assuming I went with the iPad 2020 and not the Air. I think Macs are in a weak spot right now, but iPads are in a strong spot especially with the iPad Air getting USB-C. If they gave USB-C to the iPad 2020 I think it would be the perfect device right now even if they changed nothing else aside of that port.

Passing through the differences between Android and iOS that to me are personal preferences and they both have pros and cons; I'm an old iPhone's user and actually Samsung's user; the parts of the video that I actually don't totally agree are the computer and the watch. I now have a dell XPS 15 9500, I believe that the capability to expand RAM and SSD are so worthy, although I realize that using a Mac gives more stability because Windows time to time has problems. Not as much as the past, but actually some problems are in. Speaking of the watch, I have the galaxy watch active 2, that has almost all the same features of the apple watch (Samsung version) but has nice battery life (2 and the half-day usually) and with the software update of last month I got the always-on display feature that if you have an Apple Watch 4 you got to buy a new version to have it. Speaking of your video, actually totally agree if you only want to choose Apple products, I agree with the products you choose.

Please don't assume that you can get refurbished apple products everywhere, in many countries (like mine) apple's website doesn't deliver products and we have to buy them from retailers who obviously don't sell refurbished products
