In the end, the utopian society was the tenth moon. The planet of souls. In thier desperation to become more than human, they lost the one thing that made them human. They feel no empathy, only hatred and anger that in the end they are unable to achieve their final goal. They hate us because we let go of our desire to cause unnecessary suffering in the chase of a goal that, to thier own suffering, will always remain out of reach.

Similar concept, with just as little explanation of _why_ that suffering had to happen. In Omelas, it's a metaphor. On the Planet of Hands, it's probably some kind of magic. I actually have my own wacko theory about Omelas: the kid in the cellar in a ruse. A scary story told to children, occasionally reinforced by small groups of people getting only a brief look at some clever practical effects. Anyone who thinks the pointless suffering of one single child is actually, literally enough to make an entire utopia function is letting their pessimism overrule their basic reasoning. I wouldn't want to try running a perfect society with those kinds of people around, either.

There is no boon worth the price of the eternal torture of sentient beings. Any Utopia that claims to be so is a dystopia in disguise. In pursuit of perfect happiness, SCP 001 creates perfect torture. In attempting to eliminate suffering from a society, not only do they fail, but they miss the very point. The point to life is not to experience as little suffering as possible, but to learn how to live with suffering in your life, without letting that hurt you. To experience suffering, yes. But not to let that wound you. For in doing so, you do not experience it. Sadness is a part of life; you may think this might someday be under your control, but it is not. Therefore, we must learn to experience sadness, no matter how bad it may seem, so that it can end. Otherwise, sadness and suffering just fester, and fester. Those 9 moons will eventually rebel. Untill you, as an individual, and therefore by extension, humanity, can learn to experience and properly express and live through suffering, sufferring and sadness will only fester, as they do in scp 001 and as they do on earth now and today.

I think the nature of the Tower is important to the resolution. For that which the Tower contains is that which never was. If the "Utopian" woman was trapped there, that means she was never real, which has some serious implications. The only way for the unrealized things to become real is for them to be brought out of the Tower. The woman was killed in the Tower, which means that not only did she not exist, but she never can exist. Thus, the explosion negated her existence entirely, undoing anything that requires that she exist.

Also possibly noteworthy: She wanted him, possibly needed him, to make a choice, and walking away would have also been choice. But he didn't make any choice at all. She did. She killed him, and in so doing destroyed the Tower and killed herself. It's like he couldn't intentionally destroy it - actively hitting a button wouldn't work - but he could passively allow its destruction. A dead man's switch can't be activated on purpose. It isn't an act and thus isn't a choice. He didn't make any choices after entering the Tower.

Like, I don't know exactly what happened or what it meant, but I suspect that the destruction of the Tower was far more significant than a simple symbolic act. Without this second part this was making out to be a great parable for the applied human potential, for how sacrifice on behalf of all in the present is neccessary and will lead to the progress and proliferation and happiness for all in the future... for the optimization of the future the necessity of the perceived logistical flaws in the optimization of the unfeasible plans to be incorporated and integrated with that of the present(ly cruel and uncaring, deluded and disillusioned) systems and organizations by re-evaluating our parameters and priorities, in order to secure and ensure said future, not for the continued perpetuation and all too lenient allowances made of hedonism of the few...* but for the future of the whole, of humanity as it could be, as it's going to be, whatever its going to be, (no matter how strange and alien it may seem to us with our current limited perceptions... in particular I'm reminded of a line from the Shakespeare's Tempest here and on this matter...) regardless of the past sins and failings... all in hopes of the many achieving same status and "freedom" for themselves or their offspring at the cost their present sacrifices and suffering, (mostly needless with just* a better implementation in systems of our already present knowledge), a false hope, falsely perpetuated (with and without awareness on behalf of our bureaucracy) and exploited unto an ever degenerating, corrupt and corruptible system of populace management... alas, we end up with a rhetoric (while admittedly clever and apt metaphorically, hittng a bit "too close to home" for my reading comforts(seeing how I'm already viewing the same reality as is)) on the all too real and all too prevalent human trait of enforced false duality and our paradoxical nature of self-subversion by expedition and delusion...

This scp-001 proposal is like an expanded and well-writen scp-version of "those who walk away from omelas". Listening through it, I can't help but make similarities to the two works. And as a literature nerd, I really love this scp-001 proposal.
@cadman023 жыл бұрын
I like that story. If I lived in Omelas I would grab that child and run as fast as I can for true happiness can never come at the expense of another. And apparently the humans that escaped from the planet of hands agreed.
@evieweeee3 жыл бұрын
@@cadman02 yup! Like there are a lot of similarities with the two works. You have the people who stay in utopia at the expense of the child's suffering = the humans who think they're perfect and that suffering is necessary, the people who walk away = humans who rebelled by leaving the planet of hands. Then there's also the theme of suffering and aspects that make humanity human, not some perfect creation. I find this proposal more appealing to me than the Ouroboros Cycle because of these themes and how it doesn't really become fantastical to the point where I can't suspend my disbelief, even though I like the action-packed narrative of the O.C.

As I was hearing the two parts, I couldn't help but thinking about SCP-5000 and the thing the Foundation discovered that would ultimately cause them to want to eliminate humanity. I know in their current form this story and 5000 are incompatible but I can definitely see a story where they both coexist and are basically caused by the same entities.
@TheRainstorm973 жыл бұрын
This would be cool, like if it was changed so that the awful thing that in 5000 (I think it was like our self-preservation instinct, or our souls, or something) was instilled in us by the utopians so that we wouldn't just Commit Unalive so we wouldn't have to suffer for them. As it stands, this story also has the same vibe of "everything is ending" with the desperate grasping for some kind of reset button. I kind of like that there's 5000, where everything is fixed because of our reset button (square peg, round hole) and there's this 001, where there is no fixing things.

One of the harder ones to follow and one of the best ones written. Lets take a moment to remember that authors of SCPS are largely operating under a pen name, with legends going off reservation to secretly flex their prose and knock another one out of the ballpark without you looking at the name on their jersey. Theres something to be said about the wandering samurai who fights for nothing.

That was all very confusing. Why do they need humans to come back "home" if humans are the descendants of people who were exiled to the Planet of Hands, where apparently life expectancy is about two weeks? Shouldn't they still be sending people there? I also don't really like the message of "oh, humans need to die and suffer". At the end that never really gets pushed back against and ultimately there's just a divide between people who seem psychologically manipulated into a religious suffering and people who refuse to play Jesus so that everyone in Utopia can be happy.
