I remember that Greyhawk had an interesting explanation for the Blood War. Devils make plots, Demons break plots. An infinite number of Devils make plots, an infinite number of Demons break those plots.

In previous editions, evil souls went to Carceri, in between the home planes of the Demons and Devils, and therefore also the most common battleground for the Blood War. It's the home of the Yugoloths, the Neutral Evil fiends, who play both sides against each other. I'd like to see a video on those guys.

Yugoloths are originally from Hades but currently headquartered in Gehenna; I've never heard of them being present on Carceri in any numbers, and it wouldn't make much sense, given that Carceri is a prison-plane specifically designed to be almost impossible to leave.

Also it’s stated that the tiers are simply guidelines to help mortals grasp their rough power structure. Each demon is completely unique. There’s even a creature in the 4th edition Book of Vile Darkness called a “Demon Horde.” Which is just a spattering of demons, talons, claws, paws, everything nightmare fuel.

Grazzt being an ex-devil is one of the poorer decisions in the canon IMO; he is the incarnation of the Black Man from the traditional Witch's Sabbath, and so while he might be "the devil" in a sense, he also adheres far more to the notion of a demon, a being of pure primal anarchy, rather than being some sort of fallen angel or dark mirror to the gods of traditional churches.

Lex Smithee Doomslayer’s Armor is Magic. The more he rips and tears, the more he heals. Also, may d&d spells require saving throws. Based on Doomslayer’s personality alone, his saves (not to mention resistances) would be kinda crazy. 🤔 I bet he’d have (if 5th edition) something similar to Bear Totem and Rage. If Pathfinder, he’d easily have many of the Barbarian’s defensive rage powers. Unfortunately, he’s somewhat reliant on power ups, but he could maybe mimic some of those with single-use Magic items... idk 😐

I see you are largely snubbing 4e's variations. For those interested: 4e Devils: Lead by Asmodeus, they are the twisted forms of a group of angels who rebelled against their patron deity. Asmodeus was first among them and overthrew his master with such thorough efficiency he went so far as to remove all traces of his name from the world and the akashic records. As a final vengeance though, he and his army were cursed to be as tainted in form as they were in spirit. They rule from what used to be their forgotten lord's domain and constantly vie for power in the Astral Sea. Asmodeus is also entirely responsible for Tieflings, as they came about due to a pact between him and the nobles of the once-human empire of Bael-Turoth (which destroyed itself with war both without and within). As a notable aside, there are full of evil angels in 4e who serve their various terrible gods. Only those who sided with Asmodeus during that time became the original devils. 4e Demons: The damage left behind by deployment of the Shard of Evil during the Dawn War (the conflict between the gods and the primordials) left a tainted scar in the Elemental Chaos. From this wound spills demons; elemental beings warped and deformed by the energies of the hole in reality now referred to as the abyss.

The Arch Devils that didn't climb to their positions of power, like Asmodius and Zariel, were actually Angels. The Deity they served? The Deity of Law and Order (forgot his name tho). Since they were all creations of this deity, they hated the Demons just as much as their deity, and at first, they did actually drive out & wipe out the Demons in the plane that they now inhabit. At first it was an outpost, then the longer they stayed, the more they changed and eventually became the Devils. Funny bit though, Asmodius was the one who made this Pact with the Deities. Saying that any evil doer who dies will come to the Devils and thus their celestial planes will not contain any evil mortals. The Deities agreed without reading all of this REALLY LONG contract. Eventually, the Deities discovered the Devils were deliberately pushing mortals to do evil, which meant a lot less souls would go to them, they saw this as a cheat and complained til Asmodius silenced them by pointing out the text allowing exactly that (albeit tiny and open to interpretation). So, the first beings that Asmodius screwed over with a deal was the Deities themselves. Now you know how it all started, and why Demons AND Devils are hated by Celestials.

One interesting thing about Devils not mentioned; because they require mortal souls to swell their ranks, and most of the fighting of the Blood War happens in Avernus (meaning permanent deaths for Devils), sometimes the forces of good will reluctantly turn a blind eye to the Devils corrupting mortals, as they understand that without the souls the Devils would likely lose and all other planes would be invaded by Demons.

Actually Exploring the Tanar'ri Demons as of 3.5 (and possibly 3.0) are made from Mortal Souls, like Devils. Once mortal souls started getting channeled into the Abyss they started being molded into slaves by the Obyriths and eventually took over the plane. The Obyriths, in turn, are the ones made from the plane itself, having been around far longer than mortals have. Good examples of the Obyriths are Pazuzu & Pale Night
