Lovecraft somehow gets away with a lot of things that would otherwise fall apart with other writers. Even when he falls back on his own cliches like the narrator who is, "wealthy beyond the necessity of a commercial life", as he puts it in this story. Or his insistence on never actually describing the most horrific aspects of his tales, opting instead to let the reader " fill in the blanks" while he assures them that "no words could ever convey such terrors" and so on. He actually satirizes himself about this in the short story, "The Unnamable". But, instead of being annoyed or bored with these tired devices one is generally amused as it becomes a sort of inside joke adding to the quaintness and reminding you that it wouldn't be Lovecraft without them.

Is Lovecraft always welcome? Stories link innsmouth I find the overtones of racism to be extremely off putting and that can be seen in much of his work (how he thought races shouldn't mix). Lovecraft doesn't really work that way. Yes, he references a few other stories in the dream quest, but it was meant to be read as a stand alone work. @TVNDRA
@TVNDRA 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think he is the reincarnation, I do think he was possessed by the spirit of JH. Just going on the modern day take of how “spirits” work in horror, his body was left at the door and his soul was allowed to cross the barrier of the vault. When he left the vault, the ghost stayed with him, which is why he knew all the stuff someone his age shouldn’t have known. Or, it’s all in his head.
@Soulferno
@Soulferno 2 жыл бұрын
I've only ever familiarized myself with Lovecraft's concepts than I have his actual works. So the first thing I noticed is that his way of writing is incredibly distinct and fluid. So much so that its hard to follow for a dum dum like me despite me enjoying fiction writing. All I could get from it was that Jervis essentially became obsessed with the idea of becoming a part of this ancient Tomb. Like he had nothing else to live for but the end goal of not only entering the Tomb but earning a spot in it, basically driving that obsession straight into madness. There's a supernatural element there but it becomes pretty apparent that its all in his head. I'm not good at these analysis things so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I guess HP was going for this deep sense of irony. Literally living for the purpose to just die. Sure, it wasn't exactly like that per se but his unhealthy obsession turned into him having a purpose in life which was not living as Jervis at all. I guess it kinda lines up with how Lovecraft was as a person too. From my understanding he always seemed to be this deeply apathetic and depressed man who created these horrors and psychological stories in effort to express anything proper in his mind. I see a lot of people nowadays try to boil it down to him just being this racist and awful person but I'm pretty sure plenty of people were considering the time period he lived in so I don't get the reasoning behind pointing out the beliefs and lifestyles people shared centuries ago. I think he was just horribly depressed and had no respect for the real world and its people so he wrote about it in a way only he could comprehend. Its very interesting. Someone will probably misconstrue that as me endorsing his beliefs but I couldn't care less. I was a writer back in high school and a little bit afterwards so that's how I choose to view him since he wasn't not this actual monster out committing war crimes and serial murders

@@jeffbrownstain True. The book does heavily allude to the events actually happening but that the insanity, in a manner of speaking, that he ended up giving himself too felt self induced rather than supernatural. I'd love to know where the pictures used as a shifting background for the vid were from. They look amazing, and of course a wonderfully read Lovecraft story!
