I work in a truck stop. I see so many mature women homeless. Their husbands have died and they’ve lost their homes. Their kids have stolen from them. They are on fixed incomes and rents have risen. It was a completely different time when these women were married, it was the norm the divorce rate wasn’t anything like it is today. Men from the old school worked HARD !! The wives were the homemakers etc. sadly for most those days are long gone, generally speaking: the husband worked hard and scrimped and saved ,( if he was a good husband), the wife did all the cleaning and cooking etc, this is how we were brought up. Dad has since passed away, and mum is comfortable and is well taken care of financially. Not so for others in that time: if the men didn’t save and if they wasted it on grog and pokies etc………. Some women are financially abused in their marriages, and the husband doesn’t share the money equally. This is where the problem lays for these women unfortunately.

In other countries, the elderly are taken care of by their children. The children are raised with that obligation to care for their parents in their old age. What a shame that it has to be this way for our elderly. A society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable...the elderly and the children. What type of society are we in? Family does not just consist of a spouse. Family is so much more than that and should extend out like a web of support. This is a reflection of where we are as a society.

I have been in this situation. Now fortunately I have a senior apartment. An important issue I think, is for many women who are entering retirement age now, there just were not pathways to saving, or build retirement funds. We were caught between the old notions of being wives and mothers and dependent on husbands for financial security and the new roles for women to also be workers and responsible for planning for their own old age as well as being mothers and carers. Hopefully as the coming generations of women age, they will be better prepared, and the role of mother and carer will be compensated, or at least acknowledged better, and so be reflected in social security etc. My heart goes out to all the women who find themselves in this position and feel ashamed. The shame does not belong with you. It belongs to society which has failed us by not adaquately acknowledging and compensating the work we have done all our lives.

The truth is a lot of women do not earn enough to put away enough money for their retirement. Women are more vulnerable to having to accept low paid work or unemployment than men. This story got me so deeply. Society thinks women should focus on the children and the home which obviously means the detriment of her career and when divorce happens or their spouse dies she is left to drown, without job experience or usually even credit in her name. It is heartbreaking that so many countries don't value the unpaid work that women do as carers. The solution? In my mind it's a basic universal income. In the long run, basic universal income actually lifts people up enough to get off the service and saves taxpayer money. Also, financial literacy and having people understand that financial independence is necessary for both partners.
