Magnificent! Looks like KLM starts engines in pairs, 4 and 3, followed by 2 and 1… which the -400 can do. I love the initial gravitational wing droop, the nacelle wobble beginning at 12:08, those sophisticated complex flaps, the GE CF6’s sound regime… Nothing can really live up to the technical beauty of the 747, an airplane that has more in common with drawing boards and slide rules than CAD :-)

-8 can also perform dual-engine starts. The aux tanks outboard of engines 1 and 4 are normally fueled to max capacity and burned last.

Thank-you Fejf for taking us along on your flight. I especially enjoyed watching how the wing flexed upward as the aircraft gained flight speed. It is a shame that the 4 engine jets are starting to become a legend. You really lucked out to have a flight with no crying babies (at least I did not hear any). I look forward to part 2 of this flight, when you land at JFK with swollen eyes, being dehydrated, and having to stand in line at customs with passengers from 16 other overseas flights all arriving at the same time. JUST KIDDING! Thank-you again for your work!

Wow, at 12:07 I never realized how much the outer nacelle can wobble around in the turbulence.
@gerardmoran9560 Жыл бұрын
It's fascinating. Due to gyroscopic precession, a force acting on a rotating object is manifested 90° in the direction of rotation. Up and down forces on the engine nacelle result in left and right wobbles.

Those engines definitely sound better than the 777s engines as well as the A380s engines!!

I have loved my dear friend, the 747, since I was one year old. I can happily say that the A380 is only a flying rhino on wheels, and the 777 is a boring crammed up cattle car with bumpy rides.
@tw25rw7 жыл бұрын
The 744 has the best takeoff sound and sensation. I will miss them for that. Best I ever had was on BA out of BKK. I got upgraded to business and could see back into the engines. The capt went full tilt from rotation to cruise. Was more like a launch. 777s etc can't match the sensation no matter how much cheaper they are to operate.
@TheFejfAviation7 жыл бұрын
tw25rw definitely agree best takeoff sound. Takes me back to my BA 747 flight as well. I have a couple of clips on my channel if you want to check them out.

@@28xnlh I don't remember ever flying on a 747 with P&W engines. Flown KLM many times through AMS, but never on a 747.
@28xnlh2 жыл бұрын
@@tw25rw The first 7 747 from KLM had the P&W engines, PH-BUA to BUG with water injection. The first three had dual autopilots, the other had tripple autopilots. One of them was lost at the Tenerife accident

I've flown probably a quarter of a million miles on different 747 from Air New Zealand Singapore Airlines Qantas and many others in the mid eighties to the early nineties going backwards and forwards from the UK to Australia and New Zealand and couldn't have wanted a better plane to travel on,absolutely marvelous such grace and power especially if fitted with rolls Royce RB211 ENGINES.

I sure miss hearing the rumbling sounds of 744s as they began the ascent upwards at MAN now bound for Singapore & Hong Kong during the 90s, A380s are too quiet during takeoffs IMO. Does the KLM Amsterdam to New York flight route over North Yorkshire coast I wonder?
