Devil in the Kitchen- fiddle lesson

Devil in the Kitchen is a popular Scottish Strathspey. In this fiddle lesson I demonstrate the melody with particular attention to the bowing. I talk about ornaments such as the birl or shiver, and the fourth finger unison. I use on screen sheet music throughout, and a free pdf of Devil in the Kitchen is available to subscribers. In Cape Breton (don't know about elsewhere), it's played with two more parts, and with at least one double 'cut' - i.e., 'birl' - which is a tricky little trick; the best of them (meaning, Buddy MacMaster) can play a double cut as one steady machinegun-fire repetition of the note, but most play two more or less distinct triplets. (FYI!).

It's interesting, and confusing, that a double cut in Cape Breton is quite different from a double cut in Ireland!

I might have mentioned as well that the 'double cut' (in the Cape Breton sense) requires the ability to start a cut (the second one, in this instance) on the up-bow .... @@TheFiddleChannel
