#usnavy #aircraftcarrier operations are complex and challenging, particularly the landings. Everything has redundancy built in, and for a carrier recovery, the ultimate backup is the barricade.
On this episode, "Pager" and "Rico" describe the time they were forced to recover using the barricade (at night!) in their #f14tomcat.

*One downside of using the Barricade is aircraft damage depending on speed but, saving lives & stopping aircraft from going over the side is most important!!*

I was a Fly 1 yellow shirt when this happened. After we rigged the barricade, myself and another yellow shirt went to the bow and watched it land.

Assuming there was a green light to take on fuel then the switch to open the shutoff valve did not send a signal for it to open. The valve itself usually didn't fail. So no fault on the refuel engagement there. If there wasn't a green light it's still most likely the fault of the switch since the timing has to be just right. If timing is off then there is no mechanical connection to make contact with the switch and the refueling can't take place. Most of the discrepancies for the hose reel was the timing, then the switch, and sometimes the basket due to damage to the small chute or the valve there (not the valve talked about earlier). 95% problem was electrical with timing. Perhaps the reel or hose was previously damaged and the timing was off because of that and therefore also no fuel flow. Since the hose and basket departed that's a possibility or it could have been damaged from the third try but even so it had to be attempted that way to force the probe into the basket with the IFR probe which could have been the malfunction (a malfunction of the valve at the basket). Occasionally that valve would not accept an aircrafts IFR probe. I'd rarely seen a reciever aircraft be the cause of not getting fuel though I would put that at about one (receiver aircraft) IFR probe refueling shutoff valve at one valve removal and replacement per cruise for a squadron or air wing as I can recollect.
