Fiber optic is EXTREMELY delicate work. It's also horrifyingly expensive. It's gotten cheaper since we've streamlined it's production, but back when I was first starting in computers a 50 meter line of it would go for about 2000 dollars (100,000 pesos).

A antenna on roof for internet can help too for data internet. I use for my cellphone internet because it's hard to receive signal inside home. Sometimes.

For the electrical outage problem, get yourself a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). It's like having a batter backup for any electrical devices plugged into it. Plug the starlink and your laptop plugs into the UPS and it should stay up and running for hours before needing to be recharged.

​​​​​@@TheFilipinaPea he may have said laptop when he meant router. Your laptop already has a battery. A UPS is like one of musk's power walls but a micro version. The higher the wattage the longer it should last. Keep in mind that it is powering low wattage electronic devices ; even a room fan would draw the UPS down faster than your electronic devices. You can buy a power strip and plug in a lot of low power things. You can plug in lamps with led bulbs. A small tv too but it will just draw it down faster but it would probably last over an hour unless you got a hi power UPS which would probably last several hours. Learn the wattage of your devices. Some devices list the startup watts which are much higher so i suggest you google them to learn the running watts. Use nothing that creates a change in temperature: hair dryer, hair curler, toaster, a/c, frig. I wonder if your landline Internet would have continued working if you had had a ups powering your router during power outage. But it could be that the Internet's power would also go out unless it had its own power or built-in ups. Prior to internet, most phones would continue working when a hurricane caused a power outage because the pre-internet phone lines had an independent power system. You can get a 2nd ups if you like. Cost is higher for pure sine wave and for the size of the built-in battery. These micro UPSs became common in the US to prevent computers from having catastrophic failures due to power interruptions in the middle of critical operations. FYI, in future I think you can mount that antenna on a pole.

My son has Starlink in north Cebu and loves it . Before my wife passed in 2020 we use to use local internet and it stunk . I don’t go back to the Philippines any longer as i am now 80 and gave all the assets to the children since no wife any longer we were married 40 years. But i loved spending at least 5 months a year there for 40 years .

Pea, this was an incredibly timely video. My wife is in the Philippines, supervising construction of our house. We will eventually need to set up Internet service, and I need high-speed broadband so I can work remotely, handle international banking, etc. I hadn't even thought of Starlink. Besides work and banking, there are other implications for satellite Internet--such as information during typhoons, earthquakes, zombie outbreaks, etc. One person with a working satellite system might mean the difference between life and death for a whole bunch of neighbors. A few points from a homeowner and electrician: 1. If you can't anchor the dish to the roof, bolt it to a half sheet of plywood and then pile a bunch of sandbags on the plywood. That'll anchor it while still allowing the antenna to be unmounted and brought inside when necessary. I would not attach it to a sheet metal roof. That antenna will act like a sail and start loosening the roof panels. 2. Solar panels are a great idea, and the systems used on motor homes will work nicely. Make sure the charge controller is set for the proper type battery (get this wrong and you will destroy batteries or end up with a battery fire). 200 watts of solar panels keep my motor home batteries charged even in Washington State. 3. I'd want a good quality clean power source for all the computer equipment. I sent my wife to the Philippines with a cheap 220-110 volt power converter, and it's already failing. She just bought one of those countertop transformers that are so common in the Philippines, and it is going to do a much better job of keeping dirty electrical power from damaging her electronics. If you have 220 volt equipment that is made for the Philippines, I'd still power it from a 220-220 transformer or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Anyway, thanks for the Starlink tip. That neatly solves what was going to be a tough problem.

Right. I’ve doubled up for my Starlink : everything in the house is powered up by 2 redundant batteries charged by solar panel with a gazoline engine backup.

My wife and I just recently moved to the Philippines and I planned on getting Starlink no matter what. I figured with the brownouts, I could have a battery backup power supply and at least we would have internet. I ordered Starlink while I was still in the hotel here in Tuguegarao. Once we moved into our rental property, I had it up and running in no time. However, there were some obstructions due to where it was located. I ordered the extra mount and once it came in, I had someone install it on the second story. Now I have zero obstructions and the internet has been great. I also ordered the extra ethernet adapter so I can run my own router. I brought it with me in my suitcase. It gives you better control over your network and with the ethernet adapter, they say you get better speeds. I am extremely happy so far with it.

Pea, I would highly suggest if holes were drilled through the roof that you have all the screws removed, squart or apply caulk in the holes and around the opening. Then put the screws back in to hold the antenna down. This should stop any rain water from entering the holes and causing problems. Trust me water will find its way in if it can.

Good morning Pea! Just something for you to consider, Honda makes a small generator that might fit your needs. It’s not heavy, it’s quiet since it was designed for rv’s. @@TheFilipinaPea the harbor freight tools generator that I mentioned might be a bit louder than Honda but you could easily stand beside it and carry on a conversation. Honda does make a good engine though. if you buy something look for something that's easy to maintain by easily draining the oil and possibly a filter for longer intervals between oil changes. if you don't change the oil regularly it just won't last.

I'm not sure if you run a power conditioner but if you don't, I would highly recommend it. The energy coming out of your power lines has a very rough sine wave and not to mention like you said, it cycles multiple times a week. Those power surges will destroy your electronics over time. You can solve all these problems by getting something like a Jackery kit which has a power bank with a built-in inverter that can produce a pure sine wave and portable solar panels to maintain the charge. Also just like your Starlink, it's all portable so you can take it on location when you shoot away from home.

All you need is a surge protector. Some extension cord has a built-in surge protector or you can use the one that plugs directly to an outlet.

@@edmhie1 a surge protector doesn't do anything to condition the power and provides no backup when there are outages. Not to mention if there are continuous surges, it will render the protector useless after a couple of times. Basically you think you have protection but you really don't.

Starlink was pretty good to me out in the farm country of Arizona -- until Uncle Elon raised its price on me this year and lowered the speed at the same time. I started being charged tens of dollars more for being in a rural location, but my 'rural location' has fiber internet available for a fifth of the price, so my decision was obvious. Glad that it has rolled out to the Filippines, though! I hope it serves you well!

@@KutWriteno, it's actually trying to handle the load. As good as Starlink is, it is better for SL if people that can use terrestrial solutions (fiber, cable modem, etc.). There is limited bandwidth available and if you live in an area with many users, increasing the price is a way to moderate users so that speed doesn't have to suffer.

I was wondering how PH residents enjoy reliable internet when so many of them live well outside the zones where fiber optics (cables) are laid. Congrats on acquiring your new technology Starlink. It was nice that you were actually able to see a launch of multiple satellites. Before Space X many rockets contained the one satellite and they were huge. Many satellites are archaic ans Starlink has smaller satellites with state of the art new technology. I think the STARLINK satellites are simply reflective discs. The technology today is mind blowing to this guy who grew up without an internet and for years had a 300 baud modem!

@@dngrwllrbnsn_ Your probably right. Possible something similar. So mething good to research and the emergent technology. Like you I am a blast from the past. I worked at KSC in 1978 and 1979. The computer for first space shuttle was an IBM 370 and all of the programming and system analysis was done with key punched cards. The back up computer was a Honeywell 2926 Cathode Ray Tube driven computer and the technicians would replace tubes as they went out and many did. These were the tubes use in TVs in the 1960s -1980s. I wrote all of the program simulations for the cameras adjacent to look launch pads 39A and 39B. The end result was the speed and angles to follow the shuttle but the different variables were in a complex multiple regression analysis. I did those on a PDP11 magnetic tape driven computer and they used those programs until the end of the shuttle program because they knew they worked and it would have taken over a year to replicate on new state of the art computers at the time. I was bored working there after finishing that work.

@@RCFSULAW Ooh, modern technology! I learned coding from a PDP-11 and paper tape, and microcomputing from a 6502 and audiotape (until the floppies came out). Worked on a 360 as late as 2001, when IBM refused to provide any more support for that HW/SW configuration. Along the way, programmed on Amdahl #1 and Amiga 1000/2000, that sold years later for more than the original price. Now, I do bargain basement AI using all the tools: Foxpro, because it's faster, Python, because I can code faster, and 2011 hardware because I can. But I never applied to NASA, as far as I know (one job was gov, but they never disclosed the TLA). That rocket coding was absolutely amazing. My unique coding was a 6502 voder/vocoder that used the audio port for input/output/storage. It did a great organ, but voice/string instruments a general fail, as the hardware couldn't do the necessary. On paper, fast enough, but sounded like a Geiger counter.

We got Starlink a month ago. I wish I had seen this video then! The best location for the antennae is 200 feet from our house, so we had to buy an extender (from Starlink) to boost the signal to our computers and TV. For power outages, get a universal power supply (UPS). It will store many hours of power and you just keep the modem plugged into it. Good video, Pea!

Pea, most satellite services prior to Starlink were not unlimited data like Hughes Net. If you were streaming you could use your allotment in one weekend like Globe wifi and have to spend more. If reliability is only based on power this is fantastic. I wish there was a way to install in my condo. Maybe the balcony. I like the no longterm contracts. Fiber in Cebu requires a two year contract.

The problem is the LEO satellites that can't maintain orbit & fall back to earth requiring every satellite to have to be replaced every 3-5 years. A large number of them don't even last that long.

Thanks for posting this because if you can get it great internet in the Philippines then it would definitely work for me on my nature preserve in rural Florida with 2k acres of wilderness. I have Starlink here in the United States in Florida and during our wet season each day I’ll have some drop off of signal usually for a very short time only when the clouds are really bad or there’s a lot of crashing thunder but it’s overall been a pretty good system to haveyou’re getting a bargain over there because we pay $120 per month here and had to pay $695 to buy the unit

This is a price inversion of electronics. Most consumer electronics cost a lot more in the Philippines than in the US. I believe it's because of Ph high import duties (even though shipping from China would be like almost no cost!). That 120USD is high. OUCH.

Hi Pea, you might want to weigh. the stand down with some sand bags. I get hurricanes here. you don't want your dish flying away. Bolt it to a piece of sealed marine plywood. larger than the stand and place your sand bags around the stand legs. That's since you can't ideally secure to the roof. Power lines are constantly down so I have a small generator to run modem and fridge. I'm going with skylink when I move there, it's less expensive there. Good choice Pea. you're going to like your service

Thanks Pea:) Starlink is a game changer for a lot of places. And for power backup I would recommend a solar system with battery storage. The Generator is cheaper at first but in the long run is more expensive and requires much more attention and maintenance.

@@TheFilipinaPea My pleasure Pea. What you want to look for is a 'Home Solar Power kit with battery and inverter'. I'm sure there is someone in Duma who can give you advice, size a system for you and install it. You can go with a portable system of permanent install. If you choose a whole house system your house is new, so your wiring is new and that's a big plus. And if I remember correctly your roof is flat, that will make install of the panels much easier too. And yea the price can seem steep at first, but think of it as an investment, not a one time cost because the benefits last for years. The up side is you will have energy security, never have a brown out again and your monthly electricity bill will be much lower... or no bill at all if you go off grid.

I really wanted to choose Philippines to move to in a few weeks, but internet and power reliability are important to me. I have spent most of my life moving all over the world, so the internet has become something I rely on daily. Regions that can pay more, like mine, and have many customers, pay more. Regions that have fewer customers and aren't as wealthy pay less. Our previous landline service was $100 per month. If any of the wireless carriers get far enough out into our rural areas, the cost will be about $50 per month. That may not happen.

Love mine, one of the greatest inventions so far. Will have the solar and propane generator installed by the first of the year so won't be any worries for me after that. Here in the States, we have broadband, wifi, satellite, and fiber optics. The problem we have is depending on where you live in the US will generally depend on which service provider for that service. And where they get you are all the fees which add the basic cost along with the various taxes. But this was a great video. I hope the system works well with you. At least you didn't get instructions written by engineers for engineers lol

Hi Pea, well this was certainly a different update. I have faster broadband speeds where I live however I am in the city. I think Starlink is certainly great though for areas without reliable high speed internet. Presumably you’ll still lose access during brownouts but at least you’ll be able to upload faster when you have power

Starlink is one of the most amazing things to happen to the world in a while. Elon's idea to give everyone internet via satellite is both bold and dearly needed. Much like you said earlier, even if you're on a island, you will still get satellite internet at amazing speeds without worrying about weak infrastructure - just so long as you have power. In fact, as this idea grows, just about anyone anywhere will be able to hook up with all humanity by plugging into the literal sky. How cool is that? And yes, I've seen SpaceX launch a few times and it's so pretty, partly cause it's making history.

And now he is working on satellite cell phone service - not the old style super expensive service needing special equipment - the regular cell phone connects to satellite without need for towers, service. This is possible because the satellites they are placing are in a much lower earth orbit, allowing phones to actually reach without a major antenna. How cool is that? =)

@@billtay1963 The problem is the LEO satellites that can't maintain orbit & fall back to earth requiring every satellite to have to be replaced every 3-5 years. A large number of them don't even last that long. The only benefit to starlink over other satnets is latency, unless you're a gamer that's not really important.

The original satellite dishes were 20 feet in diameter and considered an eyesore. They were originally so expensive that only the very rich in the beginning had satellite TV. I had to write a new ordinance to regulate satellite dishes for location on property, methods to block visibilty from roadways and neighbors and establish acceptable decorative vegetation that could become opaque in a year. Now it looks like it could be placed in so many places on your property and it is movable for optimum performance. Next comes the generator for back up power for Starlink and Lucy's K Dramas

This was before cable TV. Even before HBO. lol Something most people nowadays don't even know about. You could get TV channels from all over America. Problem was. It was all the same TV shows just different call letters for different areas. But when a regular TV antenna didn't help in any way, these worked great just to watch TV. Then when they came out with cable TV, and satellite companies like Dish. You'd see the giant old dishes rusting in the back yards.

@@danor6812 What your describing is boosting relying on certain stations going from one large antenna to the next. I know in Miami we got WGN from Chicago, TBS from Atlanta and WOR from New York. It was great during baseball season and they had reruns of all of the old shows. TBS had professional wrestling NWA and Ladies Roller Derby. Both were very popular in the 60s and 70s. What stations did you get and where did you live? I would imagine a more centralized state got more TV stations.

Very informative and helpful video. I'm a US born baby boomer FilAm retiree in PH 17 years. 10 of those years in Cebu City using PLDT Fiber. My service after the typhoon is again stable except for occassional nusiance level brown outs. I can see where this could save me a few dollars. but the real sbenefit for me and family would be to install this in my property on Camiguin Island where Internet is very unstable still and hard to get connected. I hope Starlink has addressed the power consumption issue with their ground stations. The early generation systems consumed huge amounts of power and produced enough waste heat that northern US users didn't need to clean snow or ice from their ground antennas. With power costs in PH, I could see this becoming another expense.

I work in satellite communication (Satcom) for the military and I can vouch for the technology in Starlink. We even started using Starlink in the military:) wish I had known about the sale); thankfully Starlink operates with a more robust frequency set but it still can suffer from Rain Fade (Weather:) so keep that in mind.

Hello Pea, now writing this for the second time. First attempt vanished into the ether. Anyway was noticing your concerns on power. I have given this topic alot of thought, I almost bought a starlink myself. Yes a generator would be nice and useful in a situation like oddett where you lose power for 5 weeks. Now for the 6 hour scheduled maintenance and endless brownouts. I figure a battery back up would work great. You could keep it plugged in and run your laptop, big monitor, and starlink directly off of it. Big enough battery should last 36 hours give or take and most have a usb charger for phone whatever. Big plus is you would be 30 minutes noticing there was a power outage unless it was dark. Lazzada and shopee have them if I am not mistaken. Good video smart move

We have Starlink here in our home in the US. I actually got their Email while we were in Bacong Philippines. It was waiting here when we got home. Best thing I ever did as far as the internet goes. I see some others have recommended this but look into a solar generator/ power station. Leave it plugged in and you’ll have power when you need it. You can also charge them with a solar panel. Generators need gas and you have to be aware of carbon monoxide. You also won’t have the noise. I have 3 of them and love them all. I take them camping and haven’t used my generator in ages👍

Wow, you got that much cheaper than we can in the US. Its $600 for the basic hardware and $120 per month for access. Also we have to wait crazy long to even get ours. I signed up in 2019 and didn't get my actual confirmation of equipment ready to ship until a month ago. You will need to get some solar and/or a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) if you want to not have to wait for the statlink to come back online after each outage in your area

OMG! The shoes! NOT THE SHOES with EARS! LOL I had a black mesh satellite dish, 10 ft on my property back in 1985. I thought it was the best tech in the day except when having a snowstorm. Whatever I missed when shown on the East Coast I could catch it three hours later on the West Coast. I could get most channels except for the big three, ABC, NBC, CBS. Could buy a chip and get it that way, but it was not an issue for me. Glad to see so many years later it's so compact. I'm in Manila (Mandaluyong) however, thinking of moving outside the Metro proper to Metro suburban so Starlink just might be the answer. Thanks for the tip.

I currently use Sky as my main with PLDT as a backup. And I have two globe portable if need be. Yeah, that's how bad I am. I just can't go unconnected. Hi Pea. Good luck with your new Starlink. I have been using PLDT since I moved here in January. I have the fiber optic and the only time my internet goes down is if they are doing maintenance, or if there is a brown out. I live in Bacong and most brown outs only last 15 minutes unless it is a scheduled brown out for the day. Also I am on the bottom floor of an apartment building so putting anything on the roof would be a challenge. Keep smiling and stay safe

Super informative and almost oddly therapeutic to watch. For us in the United States, I think that starlink probably remains a expensive option when you have so many reliable cabled services. Currently I pay 1500 pesos per month in the US for Comcast cable and and it serves all of my needs. In your situation, the Philippines internet is messy, and I completely think you found the proper solution for yourself. Great job. Very informative to watch the set up process and again very therapeutic to watch this video. It might be nice to share a follow-up video on how you feel about the service after month or two!
