You get it. Wouldn’t be surprised if this grows on people in the future. Some of the reception genuinely doesn’t make sense to me though I’m somebody who isn’t THAT big on the first one.

The only problem is that the original gladiator 2 script is that the Roman/Greek gods revive russel crow to kill Jesus Christ yes that’s real

I agree with people to a certain extent that Hollywood doesn't create new ideas which is again largely down to the execs not the filmmakers and writers out there because you would be shocked at the vast majority that have brilliant scripts ready to go to be made but people like David Zaslav and Bob Iger just don't give a shit. But...on the other hand, that doesn't mean there aren't some incredibly visually stunning and compelling films being made today even if they aren't wholly original. We got some great filmmakers out there trying their best to make wonderful work even if it is IP and outside the Hollywood blockbuster scene, I've seen some brilliant brilliant films lately. Basically yes, IP, oversaturation, "content", lazy fearful execs and producers can be a problem but I really gotta give it to the directors/writer/actors out there who are trying to put out great work. In terms of Gladiator 2, yes it's a sequel I am looking forward to see but I think Ridley has an interesting idea which can make a case for the film to intriguing and different if done well. Also here are some great films in the last few years that I adored and hope others will too: Small Things Like These, All of Us Strangers, Air, Love and Monsters, Aftersun, Boiling Point, The Bikeriders, Wonka, The Vast of Night, The Killer or Kneecap

Gladiator is a 9/10 for me . gladiator II i give 6/10. I was actually pretty disappointed. it is an easy movie to watch and kinda enjoy in the most basic way possible but nothing really wowed me. I did not care for Mescal in the lead role. He does not have a fraction of the screen presence Crowe had. The score is abysmal and does nothing except for the few time it attempts to use music from the first film. The film isn't boring though and moves at a decent place. But yeah, it is nowhere near the greatness of the first film .

Ridley deciding to shoot 'Gladiator 2' on a digital camera for the sake of convenience makes it look like a Netflix streaming movie with that actors-doing-cosplay look compared to the gorgeous cinematic visual quality of kodak and eastman 35mm used for the first one where it actually looks like a professional studio movie from the big 5 (I watched them back to back as a double bill). The other letdown is that you don't really end up caring about any of the characters so you're not that emotionally engaged in the story unfortunately. Crowe actually looks like a regal war veteran / Roman general rather than a guy you would see down at your local gym and his performance manages to provoke you emotionally. The first 2 minute entrance alone into the colosseum before Maximus instructs the gladiators to all stick together just for sheer thrill-factor, soundtrack, tension building, visual quality..etc is far better than the entirety of Gladiator 2 (5.5). Ridley is great when he has a good script to work with (The Last Duel / The Martian) but his directorial style can't elevate a lacklustre script in the same way that someone like Spielberg can.

@@travisspazz1624 Lol! I would happily embrace it in a heartbeat if it didn't look so inferior to 35. It's the same issue I had with The Hobbit vs LOTR, Furiosa vs Road Warrior, Matrix Resurrections vs The Matrix, Jurassic World, vs Jurassic Park, Phase 4 vs Phase 1, Horizon vs Open Range, Independence Day 2 vs Independence Day, The Dial of Destiny vs Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien Covenant vs Alien and Fincher's The Killer vs Seven, the difference in visual quality is still very noticeable. Comedies and Horror movies especially have suffered from digital - I watched both 'Totally Killer' and 'Ghosted' last year and it just looked like actors doing cosplay vs movies in the same genres shot on 35 like 'A Quiet Place 2' and 'Wedding Crashers.'

The movie fully delivers in terms of action and spectacle, gorgeous set pieces and costumes, cinematography matched its scale as well. The story is a bit muddled like a lot of post martian scott movies, a lot of characters are getting their shoe in the game and takes a bit away from each other. It feels very much like a final ridley scott movie to me, even though he wants to make gladiator 3 happen. Its got all of the "ridley scottisms" like dream sequences, some slow mo, a main character that goes from zero to hero (kingdom of heaven), the grand opening battle sequence that is a joy to watch. But it also adopts a lot of problems from house of gucci and napoleon, there are a number of "awkward" interactions between characters, odd line delivery here and there and some attempts at humor that don't entirely land, with some serious moments getting laughs from the audience. Post last duel, Ridley Scott has a trilogy of "awkward epics" I like to say with house of gucci, napoleon and gladiator 2. All have phenomenal production value and a good base in there and great action with the later 2, but it feels like there is an air of awkwardness in how these three movies go about their stories.

enjoyed it. It was really entertaining and, oddly enough, fun. I really didn't like the dead wife trope. They gave it very little play and it felt like checking a box on a list of requirements to make the revenge story, which greatly diminishes my involvement with the story beyond the fact that it is very entertaining at all times. I also do not share the criticism of Mescal. He's not Crowe, but I like that he doesn't try to be, although it doesn't help that the movie tries to force him to become like him. There are moments like those in his speeches which are not as epic as those in the first one. In general, I find this film spectacular due to the scale but not epic, since it lacks those emotions and those characters from the first one. Denzel Washington and everything that involves those machinations to usurp the throne seemed like the best to me. I loved the crazy performances and the tone that veered towards dark humor and the exaggerated.
