Octavarium is the eighth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater. Released on June 7, 2005, it was the band's final release with Atlantic Records. Recorded between September 2004 and February 2005, the album holds the distinction of being the last album ever recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City. With Octavarium, the band decided to create "a classic Dream Theater album",[1] drawing upon their various stylistic influences while trying to make the music less complex. It was the first Dream Theater album to feature an orchestra on their tracks. The album's structure was based around the concept of the musical octave.
Octavarium peaked in the top five in the Finnish,[2] Italian,[3] and Swedish charts,[4] and in the top ten in the Dutch,[5] Japanese,[6] and Norwegian charts.[7] Critical reception of the album was generally positive; the diversity of the music was praised, although critics found some of the songwriting to be inconsistent. Dream Theater promoted the album on a year-long world tour, with the majority of concerts lasting almost three hours and featuring a different setlist each night. The tour finished at Radio City Music Hall accompanied by an orchestra; this performance was recorded and released as a live album and concert video entitled Score. They co-headlined the 2005 North American Gigantour with Megadeth.

Seriously people if you have ever recorded bass you know that this is what the stems sound like. Nobody seems to get the fact that it sounds next to perfect when it is put in the mix. It's not meant to be heard by itself as a solo, if it was it would be mixed differently. As for the "sloppyness" or "timing issues"... This song is extremely difficult and fast and it's all over the fretboard. Guess what Myung is a human as much as we refuse to see this. I've seen him mess up live before. Doesn't mean that this performance is terrible. I think given the song and the speed it's amazing that you can hear all the notes. A lot of people can play this song, but not many can play it this well. Go home and try recording it yourself and let me know how it comes out. Myung knows what he's doing and so do the people who mixed this. End of story.

Guys when recording bass, you never listen clean bass. You listen it with a song. Bass is much harder to record than guitars or drums, especialy if it's played with fingers. Those little incosistencies doesn't matter in a whole song. It gives a song a live feel.

for you noobies out there... this IS a mastered bass track. when you mix and master a track you cut out the frequencies which are not needed or reserved for other instruments. the bass drum needs space in the bass frequencies too...so when you are hearing only the bass track, it probably sounds like this....there is so many to say about this, but the most of you couldnt understand ...

For anyone saying this isn't Myung, try playing it yourself on a 5/6 string guitar. And then record and make sure the final track is how you want. You will hear every little clank, every little slide, you will hear everything. If you don't think this is him, you are not a musician/music producer/music engineer. So shut the fuck up, and appreciate that this is truly him.

I still don't know how people can say this is bad.

There's weird phenomena that occur when tracking/mixing/editing bass. One of which that may be throwing people off here is that when recording bass... well, you got to make it sound perfect and grooving with the drums. (And when you do that, it is awesome!) But when you have bass that is perfect with the drums and for the song, it can sound a tiny bit jumbled if you listen to it solo, like in this video here. It'll probably sound even more off if you listened to with just guitars and bass. In short, the kick and snare have an effect on the way your mind is interpreting bass guitar in every song.

For anyone saying that this is sloppy: On the recordings, bass players often have low action, because it’s just much much easier to play with it. It gives that characteristic fret buzz we hear here. Good mixed rock songs make that bass „phumphumphum” sounds being in the background, which makes song sound fullier. With high action, this bass track would make like 30% less sound on the album, and just less busy. Would it make song sound better? No, it would just give a different sound to the bass, more calm and less diverse. It is great while playing live, where hearing music feels totally different than on the album. I think John plays live with high action, and he can shred this song live without problems. So, to conclude, this bass track is as normal and „correct” (as some pepole would like to say) as it should be. It works with a song really great, you don’t hear that track directly but from the background.

It says he plays with low action when in the studio, so that could explain the fret buzz which does sound really cool

@SgtZaqq Ah i know what you mean, no it's not muted, he's digging in a little less and lowered the volume of the bass (but the track level was raised to keep volume the same) The growly grind from earlier in the song comes from the Valves in the amp being driven by the massive output of his bass being accented by playing hard which is why there is less finger noise in that and later sections too :)

Thank you for sharing this, firstly the information is very true. Secondly, your play really well. I totally understand the theory you and the others in the comments are trying to explain in the comments as I'm a bass player myself. Once again, thanks for pointing out this important piece of information which most people are misinformed about the bass. 👍🏻🤘🏻 you deserve a great big Like for your explanations and effort, subbed to you too my man! Rock on!

Well I own the rbxjm2 and I can soundly say that is exactly how the bass sounds. I was alslo skeptical about the authenticity if its actually JM but that's for sure the way that bass sounds so probably authentic.

@DukeofMonton There is very little white noise, just the sound of the strings hitting the frets. By itself it might not sound so good, but it's a tone that manages to cut through the many instruments in the band, if only by a little.

Man you can tell those some light strings that’s why he has a 6 string so he can use light strings because if he use a 4 string he gonna need some extra heavy string to tune to A D C G
