For me, I was out at the divorce announcement. Through the covid lockdown, there were people writing into the their relationship podcast with genuine sincerity & vulnerability saying they were struggling being home with their spouses and partners. Rachel and Dave were basically like “🤷🏻♀️ were the happiest we’ve ever been. Our marriage is stronger, in fact. Must be a you problem.” Then two months later it’s “this divorce is three years in the making.”
@KelseyDunlevy2 жыл бұрын
And then Rachel had the audacity to lie to her audience and say that they shared that they were struggling for years... I would love to ask her, face-to-face, show me exactly where you told us you and Dave were struggling in your marriage. She constantly bragged about how their marriage was better than ever, and she was an exceptional wife, etc...
@franniepan2 жыл бұрын
Not only that, now she's saying, they were struggling for 5 to 7 years before they got divorced.

I really have to thank TFD for really educating me on influencers, MLMs, etc the past few years. I definitely compared myself to the picturesque Instagram posts with their generic quotes and it was very miserable. My sister read Rachel Hollis’s book and raved about it. I didn’t end up reading it because I preferred self help books that have some empirical studies and I can look at how the data is interpreted. One thing I definitely picked up from Grad School was that if someone is coming from a position of authority then you should be questioning as no body of knowledge is complete.
@cooperhansen74302 жыл бұрын
One thing I find so interesting with this couple that you kinda leave out is that - you say Rachel Hollis "convinced" Dave to leave his job. BUT she makes it clear in her books that he only left his job if he could basically run the company she built. Whether you like the business or not, it was hers, and he left his job and was not willing to be second to her. They had an imbalance of power when they got together and he was never willing to let that imbalance go

This is an incredibly smart and well outlined look at the Rachel Hollis/self-help phenomenon. "Selling you a line of control" that ultimately becomes "you have no one but yourself to blame," despite the immense privileges of the people selling you those ideas--that's one reason I left the Unity church I used to attend. That's a huge part of New Age/New Thought philosophy. There's an interesting juxtaposition in Rachel Hollis, coming from a Christian background, where they typically espouse the idea that everything is God's plan and we don't really have control, with the New Age idea that ONLY you have control over what manifests in your life.

Privilege is any unearned advantage. -it can be anything from naturally straight teeth, to growing up in a bilingual home, to being the eldest son of the Queen of England- not just Conventionally attractive, straight, cis, white, male with a trust fund and a therapist on speed dial. "I am privileged af, but no one works harder than I do to get what I have." -RH. This sounds like "born on third base" talk-or in RH's case: born on first base, married on third.

I had heard of Rachel Hollis, I knew someone who went to her Rise conference. Several people recommended Girl, Wash Your Face. So, I read the book and felt like it was disappointingly a repeat of all the generic life advice we all hear with a dash of romanticizing her abusive relationship with her future husband and gently telling us if we can’t do it it’s our lazy fat ass fault, whatever “it” is. But smile girl! It came as no surprise when soon after I heard she was divorced despite her “perfect” relationship.
@nici44792 жыл бұрын
What a great way to include an important conversation! I've read that book, the only relatable part in it is the whole "keep promises to yourself" chapter; everything else was just crap. With the relationship chapter even worse lol

"Self help is selling a line of control....." ".... and ultimately you are the one to blame" Ryan said it best. Insidious .... and Rachel saying the lack of sleep thing- something that hit me in bed the other night with the 75 Hard challenge. Like, it goes on recommending dragging exercise equipment into your drive way at 1 AM..... no no no. I will complete the challenge but not giving up sleep...... Rest and recovery are 2 of the most important pieces of health.

This reminds of another money influencer, Mr. Money Mustache, who surprised everyone with a divorce announcement. There's nothing wrong with divorce, of course, but he also portrayed his life as the ideal version of how good life could be if you lived liked him. He's even given marriage advice in his blog. It really made me feel like his entire schtick is a scam.

I appreciated the part about seeing all criticism as hate. I was in a "master class" once where a gorgeous white woman talked about how a client told her she was a little overwhelmed by the woman's manner of speaking. As an introvert, I was too. But the woman basically interpreted it as "How dare you! F*ck off if I'm 'too much' for you," rather than considering that her manner of messaging might be off-putting to certain persons. It's true that not every person is right for everyone, but it's like people are allergic to self-awareness or reflection as a means to self-improvement. I myself am very sensitive to criticism, but have taken steps to address that and to depersonalize criticism so I can grow. No one is perfect; why is that awful to admit?
@nicolekenna86252 жыл бұрын
It is hard to admit when you're wrong, but it's worse to insist you're still right as the world moves on without you.

11:36 - "Blessed enough to carry my babies" sounds yikes as if women who can't carry a pregnancy or those who don't want to be pregnant, are worse off. As a childfree woman I cannot care less for people like her. I would immediately dislike her if that was the first post of her I saw. Also I have stretch marks since teen years. Her post sounds as if women who had stretch marks as a result of pregnancy or significant weight loss deserve to wear them with pride, but where does it leave women who have stretch marks without ever being pregnant or losing significant amount of weight?

Is Ryan going to be the person who has more information for other episodes this series? At the moment it feels like Julia is doing most of the research in the last three episodes. Maybe he is meant to be the audience proxy who does not know about the subject? I think it would be more natural for the hosts to interview the people contributing the audio clips so it is more integrated into the episode, at the moment it feels out of place. I like the guests can contribute new information/perspective/insider look. Julia is very engaging and looking forward to new episodes !

The only good information I got from girl wash your face was potential issues I might run into if I ever have the privilege to foster/adopt a child. Everything else was pretty basic, and she would say if you don’t believe in god then use whatever you use then proceed to talk about god, as an atheist I couldn’t really relate to those bits. But whatever I just read past it. As soon as she said she was a blogger in the beginning of the book I ONLY read it in a bloggy voice and couldn’t really feel any sincerity in it.

I wish i could have finished the podcast because I liked most of what you had to say, however, i had to stop because there isn’t much nuance here. I expect more from FD. Saying things like “she made her husband quit his job” totally glosses over the responsibility Dave had in the Hollis car crash. There seems to be a lot of dog piling just for the effect of being able to say how bad she is. I have never been a RH fan, but i think the conversation could have been a lot more interesting if it had explored the idea of how our society set up someone like Rachel Hollis to succeed and fail instead of being like “i loved her, but man now i realize she was the worst.” Also, male self-help gurus have said way worse stuff the RH, but they are never held accountable the same way she was, why? Lastly, for all the talk of cancel culture celebrities don’t really get cancelled but Rachel Hollis as lost most of her fan base. What let to such a thorough cancellation of her? Sexism, pandemic, or does the self-help industry just need to sacrifice one of their own to keep on scamming? I only got to min 38:42 so maybe it does cover more of these nuance topics. Thanks!
