The rising interest rate can surely control inflation, but won't prevent erosion of the eroding purchasing power of the Canadian dollar. I have learnt my lesson this time. The banks can't be making money off my money, while inflation eats into it. I have set aside 650k to invest in the stock market now, since that keeps up with inflation, but I don't know how to get started.

Keeping money in the bank is like paying banks and the Govemment. Here's how it works: The bank gives out your money as loan, and charge interest obviously higher than inflation rate, and then give you, the depositor, interest lower than inflation rate. That means net loss for you. That is why I prefer to invest, and on average, my advisor makes returns that always beats inflation!

Things are strange right now. US dollar is becoming less valuable because of inflation, but it's getting stronger compared to other currencies and things like gold and property. People are turning to the dollar because they think it's safer. I'm worried about my retirement savings of about $420,000 losing value because of high inflation. Where else can we keep our money?

I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. Our productivity continues to deteriorate compared to the USA, hence our collapsing standard of living brought about by Trudeau and his “budgets balance themselves” mentality. Throw in all our sacred untouchable protected professions and marketing boards and we are destined to continue our plunge. Examples, a legal system that takes 4 years and 5 million dollars to wrap up the Stanley cup riots compared to Great Britain taking 6 months to convict the Croydon London rioters. Our marketing boards where quite often the restrictive quota allotment is worth more than all the other inputs making it almost impossible for new entrants. If you want productivity to flourish then allow true competition, sadly very little here in Canada with woke socialist politicians at the helm.

That's because you don't comprehend economics. There isn't enough gold on the planet to support the size of the global market, nor the world's population. If you gathered all of the gold in the world, and put it in one place, it wouldn't even fill an Olympic size swimming pool. Returning to a gold standard would cause more than half of the world's population to die from starvation. You cannot base a currency on it anymore. I don't say this to insult you btw. It's because too many people are listening and repeating what they read and hear about online. Economies, nowadays, are way more complex than back in the day when a gold standard existed.

I think that it could happen sooner due to the disconnected political leaders. We have many countries as we speak, dropping the U.S. reserve currency. The Canadian dollar will also be affected by the results of direction on these developments. We also have unfavorable tax conditions due to bad direction and decisions of political party in control. With myopic views of trying to repair the present damages and not being able to see the future direction on how these decisions are going to develop. Many contractors will not be hired due to high income taxes. So that makes Canadian companies less competitive in a world that is advancing at break neck speed. Eventually, Canada will become the next Venezuela rich in resources but unable to reach its full potential. And burden with social issues that will will cripple its development. And only create a higher deficit. All societies that followed socialist views eventually became failed states in history.
@sebastienbolduc5654

I fully agree with you. What they haven't taken into consideration is the cloth that the people are cut from. The Europeans that came to the New World, aka us, are not lemmings. Eventually a cork is going to blow. A lot of these policies and political ideologies that are destroying our nation are coming from European interest groups. These are groups which have infiltrated our governments by having our leaders as members. They've already done a great job ruining Europe. It's time that the New World remains steadfast, and insure that the Old World Order (Europe) stick their noses out of our business. I joke you not. The European elite are still butt hurt that we sent them back bleeding from their rear ends. That applies to both the French and the English. Even the French in North America were beginning to turn against the church and King. It's too complex to get into explaining btw. Then you have recent history, WW1 and 2, etc. The European Union was created to compete against us. The European elite are doing what they've always done, ruling by a hidden hand. They're cowards. That's the difference between the Europeans who remained in Europe compared to our ancestries who left for the New World. When things get bad enough North Americans won't take it sitting down. I think that has already begun.

Its no wonder that Canada innovates at only 23% of the US rate. The question for government is whether its worthwhile to tax 1% of manufacturing revenue paid in royalties net of R&D cost at a high rate at the risk of losing taxes on the other 99% at lower rates. According to the Big Mac Index, the Canadian dollar is about 2.4% undervalued against the U.S. dollar today. Going back a few decades, the average exchange rate is about 80 cents and the median is about 78 cents. Maybe I'm off by a cent here, but that's roughly what it is. I'd be shocked if we get to $0.50 ten years from now, especially within the context of a booming commodity market (which is rather likely in the type of inflationary environment being described by JFT). Canada is a big country. If you live in Saskatchewan, Alberta, or Northern Ontario, you're likely going to be just fine over the next ten years, notwithstanding incompetent government officials and central bankers that tend to get in way most of the time. I'll take the other side of JFT's long-term prediction, though I reserve the right to change my mind which ultimately depends on the competence of future governments and central bankers, both in Canada and the U.S. if the CAD/USD exchange rate is what you care about. When two ships are sinking, it may not be all that important to predict the rate at which each ship is sinking from year to year. That is unless you manage money.

@@robm9581exactly, stupid people complaining about immigration never botter to actually check our birth rate, which is a meager 1.43 babies per woman, way below the 2.01 child per woman needed to natural replacement and population natural growth. If you want to cut immigration, you need to convince Canadian women to stop focusing on their post secondary, post graduate education, careers, going up the corporate ladder, building and running their own businesses. Tell them to renounce feminism and embrace traditional female roles, be stay home moms and wives again, get married younger, focus on building a family, have 4 or 5 babies like their great-grandmothers used to do so they can grow the population naturally. Good luck with that one. Not gonna happen. It's either feminism and gender equality or immigration. One or the other. We need to choose one or the other. And because went force women to go back and become traditional women anymore and focus on having babies we are forced to resort to immigration to supplement our population numbers. Nature is sexist. Nature doesn't care about our feelings. Nature never intended for women and men to do the same tasks and have the same jobs. As a matter of fact many anthropologists say that this is exactly one of the reasons why Neanderthals went extinct. They didn't have division of Labor according to gender. Their women went hunting with their men instead of stay home and take care of their children. As a result they went extinct. The moment the women in our species also refused to fulfill their natural female roles and became like men, naturally the birth rate plummeted. Now the only way we can make our population grow or maintain its numbers is by supplementing it through immigration. No other way about it.

The Canadian government doesn't like if people are finding ways to survive in this shitty economy so bring in something new. Where's the democracy if we can't bring down the government who's going insane?

Buy usd and bitcoin guys. No point holding CAD. If investment leaves Canada then only thing Canada has oil and million dollar condos. There is no point holding CAD.

USD X is damn strong now against all other currencies too, not only against CAD. It'll come down to re-balance itself as US goods are too expensive due to strong USD causing the demand for US product to go low then there'll be too much surplus of USD on market which would saturate its value, ultimately pulling itself down. Thus correcting itself by the invisible hand of economy. Forget about decade. We don't even know which way my BCE dividend stock swing in coming 5 min.

This guy isn't mentioning how much property tax people pay in the USA. It is a LOT higher than in Canada. Not saying Canada is better than the USA etc just pointing out that this is not a sincere discussion about tax.

Nevermind, the health insurance costs in the states, which happens to be like a coupon if you really get sick there and need treatment. Plus their drug prescription costs there are ridiculously much higher than ours too.
