Travelling far offshore, solo small boat fishing can be exciting and challenging. Autumn and Winter can offer some wonderful wreck fishing and this was a prime example. Trying a new location I had an incredible day fishing with lures and some monster fish with bait. Pollack, Coalfish, Ling and HUGE Conger.
Here are links to the heavier gear I was using. I hope it helps:

Really enjoy your video's. Very informative. Don''t worry if you are repeating what you said in a previous post. Very much interested in why you have certain tactics in slow moving tides. Keep up posting! One question: Why does the sliding bullit lead in your rig previously posted need moving the approx 1 ft. Why not have it fixed? What's the benefit? Thx. Jan
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 4 жыл бұрын
- Having the bullet lead sliding ( I call it a "locked in lead" ) can act as a self hooking rig - like a bolt rig; it also doesn't have the weight at a fixed point which can create a pivot point for the fish to turn the hook out.

So in New England, that which you caught first is called a pollock. Pollachius Virens. It's the only one that we get on the East Coast, so we call it pollock. There is also Alaska pollock on the West Coast, but that's a totally different fish from another family. We have some deep water (400ft) spots offshore that are loaded with schools of Pollock. Big ones too. We use heavy jigs and incite feeding frenzies, I have some videos on my channel.

Hi Mike - good luck with the Hip, if it's anything like mine, it should give you a new lease of life. I was told I had Aseptic necrosis of both hips back in the early 90's - luckily only the right side ever gave me serious trouble. I was too young to have anything done back then so had to wait until Autumn 2007 when they decided I couldn't go on as I was, so did a 'Birmingham' (name of the joint type) replacement. Since then, once it had healed and I "got back on my feet" it has been brilliant! 13 years ago now and I get an occasional slight twinge, but I'm walking better now than I was before being diagnosed. I hope yours turns out with the same amount of success! 👍👍

Nice bunch of fish. With the covid I haven't been Pollack or Haddock fishing this year, From what I have been told the haddock fishing was great all summer and into the fall with pollack coming in strong later in the fall. Hopefully next year I will be able to get out and get some great fish, For jigging I mostly use jigs in the 12 to 16 ounce size. Some times I have to move up to 21 ounce jig , I tend to use heavy jigs due to how many people are on the boat so it is better if I m straight possible to cut down on tangles

Being a northern born lad myself I suppose I could translate some of it for the furriners who watch. When John said he was "made up" he wasn't talking about lipstick and eyeshadow. That's a whole other set of videos we may not get to see. "Made up" = chuffed, pleased, tickled pink, like a dog with two d*cks. It's very much associated with the Liverpool area but also common around the north of England. And from a previous foraging and lobster cook video "all klartered up" = mucky, messy, need a wash. It's just a bloody good job he doesn't come from where I live now in northern Aberdeenshire or you wouldn't understand a word. I've been here 8 years now and still barely understand some of the rural locals.

It’s official...the solo boat fishing is like a fascinating chemistry lesson where you learn tons. The foraging vids are the lessons you miss lunch for cos they just take you to another dimension. Wonderful film John. Surprised you haven’t got a shiner after saying on the live session that Hannah couldn’t bake🍰🧁🐟

What a brilliant days fishing you've had John that's certainly stocked a few freezers for winter. Amazed at the size of that Coal fish, not seen one that but before. The best fish of the day for me was that finger closely followed by the ling, not because it but your thumb but it was a really good size, wouldn't mind seeing how your wife or Jim will cook it. Next time you catch a decent size long can you do a gutting and prep video please.

Wow those were some great fish. Really enjoyed watching this video, time went by quickly. John what does it mean when you say a fish is blown? I understand you can't release it but I don't know why. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I don't plan on fishing again but I like knowing about it. Just like I used to read my sister's quarter horse magazines so I could understand what she was talking about. Take care of you and yours.

- Thats fine Connie, blown is a term used to refer to a fish that has barotrauma. It is similar to when a diver gets the bends. and is caused by the change in pressure from coming up from deep water.

Thanks 👍. Maybe you should mark the line at 30 feet and let them rest there for a few minutes before bringing them in the rest of the way.😂. Of course for 300 feet you might have to do that more than once. That blue shark 🦈 might have had dinner on you by that time. Deepest I ever went was 110 feet and we just had to wait a few minutes.

Paul, there is a surprising amount of information available on locating wrecks if you do a bit of research. The most obvious source of information is the good old Admiralty paper charts, especially the large scale charts. If you look closely there is an incredible amount of information about the sea bed on them. Not just wrecks, but sand banks, gullies, rough ground and all sorts of interesting spots for anglers. The charts give you enough information about the locations of wrecks for you to find them reasonably easily. I'd suggest you get yourself a free copy of the NW Europe Catalogue to find the most appropriate UK Hydrographic Office charts for your area ( www.admiralty.co.uk ) I'd also suggest buying a copy of Chart NP5011 (actually a book) so you can understand all the symbols on the charts. It is also possible to buy from the UKHO a list of wrecks with their precise latitude and longitude given, plus a few details about the wreck. You can specify the exact area you are interested in, such as say 'all wrecks within a radius of ten miles from Portsmouth' or 'all wrecks within twenty miles south of the Dorset coast between Weymouth and Swanage'. There are also the Kingfisher Charts used by professional fishermen, primarily to avoid dangerous areas. These may include uncharted wrecks where trawler men have snagged their nets in the past. There are also many books published by dive clubs, that give details of wrecks popular with divers, eg 'Dive Sussex'. I understand that many French trawler skippers own a set of books that detail all the wrecks in the English Channel too.
