Why on Earth did you leave all that soil under the new stairs ? ?, dreadful dirty thing to do ! The soil will begin to leave a “ fusty, Musty “ smell after a while ? It will encourage damp and mould like the old ones had ? Sorry Mr Fixer, but that’s a huge big NO NO in my books ! It may be only your basement, but all that lovely timber and all your careful work, spoiled by your laziness in leaving what appears to be an apparent “ spoil heap “ hidden underneath ? , shoddy workmanship that certainly wouldn’t be allowed here in England !

The long awaited day has finally come. Those stairs were disastrous. It looks like whoever built it made the stringers out of wood scraps and held them together with plywood haha. I appreciate that you took the time explaining how to make stringers because that was the one thing I had no idea how to make! The before and after was so satisfying to watch. Great video. Can't wait to see the door build.

They make a stain-type product for cut ends of pressure treated that adds back some of the protective chemicals. I would be tempted to use that at least on the stringer bottoms that contact the concrete. But it should be a much drier anvironment now that you fixed up the doors. And I can feel your satisfaction as you finally walk down a solid flight of stairs! Nice.

Great job! Thats a very solid set of stairs, better than most stuff I seen built over past few years. If you want them to last, you should lift the stairs a bit gently with a pry bar and add some 6 mil poly strips or sill gasket under the feet between the concrete and anywhere the stringers touch earth. Pressure treated lumber or not, moisture from below is the enemy.

@ranger178

I like the instruction on cutting stringers it is a good explanation of the process. it might be good idea to put something between the wood and concrete to prevent moisture from concrete rotting the wood like the stretchy rubber tape for sealing windows or foam sill seal anything to keep them from touching and also along where dirt touches bottom of wood. my stairs had metal stringers that bolt right to wall the metal rusted away over 60 years of moisture from walls so i just put up new ones that are made by steel door company bilco is nicer than the other brand the new ones were galvanized so i just screwed them to wall with some foam tape to keep them off surface from rusting in future they were pretty easy to fit but either top or bottom step is never going to be perfect. they are kind of expensive couple hundred dollars but so is lumber 2x12 all you do is slide in steps into slots when done.
