I think that the second method of flutter tonguing is better suited towards the higher register of the flute. When I play a third octave A, the effect of the flutter tongue is amazing. Try it out with notes above the third octave like F and G. The fourth octave I'm not that sure.
@flutechannel8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua How yes the thing with flutter tonguing is that its different for everyone in how it reacts in most of the registers. Glad you found some ways that make you feel good. I know plenty of people who are quite uncomfortable when first starting out.

I can only do the tongue one, but I can only do it when I play flute, I can't do it at all when playing piccolo! Is it because it's harder to do it with the higher notes like you said in the video?
@wintersolsticeboy72274 жыл бұрын
I’ve become accustomed to the piccolo really well, it’s more about making the tongue roll louder and have more air, flutter tonguing requires more air while the piccolo requires thinner air, yet still more. Make the roll more intense and may you’ll get it!

Something I've been wondering but haven't had much luck finding an answer for it: about how long can a flautist hold a flutter tongued note without needing to take a breath? Or is it about the same as a regular note? I just wasn't sure if, since doing the tonguing technique is a little more difficult, you maybe have to use more breath than usual and therefore don't get as much sustain... but I wasn't sure if that assumption on my part was true or not. Excellent and helpful breakdown, Amelie.
@flutechannel Жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! It depends. But on average with low notes ( below middle C ) about 40 seconds and more higher notes lets say after G on the staff and higher is about 15-20 seconds. Hope that helps.

@flutechannel8 жыл бұрын
+MyLifeIsFireworks its usually notated above the note with "Fl" that I would say is the main way it is written, in addition a squiggly line above the note is used to indicate flutter tonguing. - nikola

My native language have rolled r's but as another comment explained superbly, it's rolled together with a wovel. I have great difficulties rolling with only an air stream (but practice make it easier). Maybe that's a contributing reason to why Ian Andersson vocalizes so much into the flute? He (rock and) rolls a lot after all. Anyway I don't know if it's actually easier to roll with a vowel or if I'm just used to it, but it can be worth a try for y'all who struggle

Man, I'm doing a solo piece for my semester recital (Prelude from Carmen, absolutely gorgeous) and there's two measures of flutter tongue on the low A (3/4 time, 58bpm) and I can only get about two beats in before coughing up spit into my instrument. Any pointers?
@edelweiss-lotus56974 жыл бұрын
I can roll my "r" because one of the language I speak has it, but it is almost impossible to roll it while having such a small aperture with the lips. The "rolled r" is often conditioned by the vowel which follows it, and "voiced" in natural languages. So, I was wondering what kind of "consonant" should precede and follow the "r" if we want to keep it voiceless and keep the aperture as small as possible to help us with the "flutter"? "frrrrü" or "prü" ? (my ü is a "french u", not and English u, closer to an unstressed French "e") But it could also be an unstressed Russian ы ( "y"), a sound that is deep in the throat, near the soft palate. By the way, what is the French expression for "flutter tongue"?

I can't do the throat one at all, I'm so used to roll the r, it's such a struggle😂 I don't live in Germany, so I struggle a lot to speak high-German "properly", it's a problem some Swiss people have. Like I said I roll the r, I say the ch and k "the ugly way" according to my German teachers. But hey, I don't care because it's just in school and uni where you have to speak high-German😁. My flute teacher is from the region of Basel in Switzerland. They don't roll the r with tge toungue, they say it the French way. By the time I learned the flutter toungue I kinda taught it to myself because I couldn't do the throat way and my teacher couldn't do it the rolled r way. It's kinda funny how most people can't roll the r but I can't not roll the r😂

Honestly don't know how people growl and do it! I have to do rolled R which is so much easier. I guess it goes to show how everyone is so different :) Tip for rolled R off the flute first that worked for me: Have your tongue loosely in the air in your mouth and when you go to blow imagine you're about to yawn and blow really hard! When you go to blow really hard tense the front of the tongue a little.. Tends to start it off :)
