As someone who has picked up the flute after not playing for 10 years, this is incredibly helpful. It’s much easier to see where I was before I stopped and where I am now. I’ve been struggling with the temptation to try the pieces I used to play haha.

i don't seem to fit in any level fully. i would consider myself developing overall. but i am more a novice with knowing scales, and more early intermediate when it comes to intonation. still nice to know where i'm at. i stopped playing at age 14, started again in my 30s. interestingly enough, i think it is like riding a bike. i didn't forget much, though i used to play higher notes more easily. thanks for the video

The exciting this is that you know what areas you need to work on most (scales ) and what your strengths are. I think that is half the battle one. Excited to see you grow!

Thank you for this great information. This is just I needed to move on. Kind of got stuck on what to do next.

Nice video and chart! My question is about finger speed in the chart: are the BPM numebers for a quarter, 16th?

Great question! Should definitely clarify. These are taken directly from the exam scale lists and most of the time should refer to two 8th notes per beat. But thank you! That definitely needs to be clarified 🙏

I am an advanced intermediate because my scales aren't that fast but every thing else is advanced. I know up to 5 flats and 4 sharps.

Not sure if that focus on scales says so much about level… because I play major and all minors up to 6#&flats. I play up to 4th octave C. I like a scale exercise going up C major, down Db, up D, down Eb, up E, down F, up F#, down G, up Ab, down A, up Bb down B, up C from 2nd to 3rd octave all over again. More a brain exercise. My tempi are not very fast. Breath mileage is weak, intonation ok-ish, dynamics are weak, articulation so la-la. Tone quality mostly not too bad, but lacking different colours. Vibrato rather natural, as I find the regular hah-hah-hah-hah exercises rather artificial, not resulting to my taste. All that makes me - a weird animal? 😁

How cool is that...I am early intermediate....almost intermediate...thought myself to be way worse
