Lol I feel like it should have been for the other members of the band too. I play flute, sax, violin, and a couple others and literally this applies to everything except percussion.

I am a composer working on a new ensemble piece with a flute and this helped me understand flute articulations so much better! This piece is so much more expressive now! Thank you! I would love to pick your brain a bit about how composers can make things clearer for flautists when we are composing!

Which of these do you guys find the most difficult to play?
@acidforblood3 жыл бұрын
I've been playing the flute for 3 months and finding doing staccato or non-legato at a faster tempo with low notes (low E flat--->Low C) with single tonguing difficult. I can play these notes on their own, but I lose tone when I tongue them quickly with faster tempo. The lower the note I go within that range the more tone I lose when tonguing them. If I tongue them slowly the tone is better. I'm trying to improve this with the help of a metronome. I usually start off my practice with low register tone exercises from Trevor Wye's spiral bound Practice Book to warm up the flute then work on the articulations. My current range I can play with reasonable tone is Low C to the next octave A. I'm currently working on getting to 2nd octave C# but I need to work on my embouchure some more. Single tonguing middle register notes quickly seems easier.

Thanks Tatiana, awesome explanation ... even with the 'what does this even mean?' commentaries. I find it very difficult to articulate on flute, but now I at least understand a few of the subtle nuances required.

@@TheFlutePractice Tatiana, I have enough problems staying in the correct octave, so I think my tongue wanders a lot. Yes, I know ... Practise Practise Practise! I was thinking I should join your online lessons, but I think my internet may be too dodgy for that.

There was an article in the NFA magazine sometime last year about "the same note" written under a slur, which can be a similar concept to some of these articulations under slurs and you had it a bit here in the Mozart. The author argued the articulation should be made "from the chest" meaning a breath attack and apparently there was some period writing to support this, but it feels like most of the time with period stuff it's what everybody says that they were thinking like everyone could read string articulations and you're just supposed to "carry" the line like you kind of say here... although I do think sometimes with modern flute composers the slur can be interpreted in a way that you just don't tongue inside it, so if you must re-articulate/attack it must be a breath attack... but probably if they really want that a footnote is best... anyway that's an idea of what I think sometimes is meant by this kind of mark, but I don't it's so clear as the NFA article seemed to be arguing. I was in a reading with my chamber group and the conductor simply told the composer (a clarinetist) that that marking didn't make sense on the flute... I agree the notation was confusing.

Hi from France Tatiana! Thank you for this subtleties and all your videos, it helps a lot. I have a 2 months beginner request: could you tell us about how you deal with the condensation. At home it's easy (a tissue takes care of it) but I'm wondering how you do in concert. It's funny how the flute drips on my pants, on the floor or on my music sheet. And funny too the eyes of 2 friends who saw this the first time! After 30 minutes, the flute became the Victoria falls! I didn't find a single video on this theme. As if it is taboo haha!
