Over 50 years ago when we were younger on my Uncles farm we used to put Creosote and old engine / gearbox oil in old 45gall drums which we soaked Posts and Rails until we needed to get down the Feed Passage in Winter - We then moved them into a Old Shed on a Old Horse Drawn PikeTrailer which had had a drawbar put in it for the Next Time 3 of us were able to pull it out by hand to put the barrels behind and put the Posts and Rails on the Trailer for future use Good Memories John & David Millican (Twins)

Hi Richard the posts and fencing panels around my garden are 50 years old and still good because I have treated them every year to a mix of creosote and old engine oil.

Fruit tree wood makes good carving materials and years ago it used to be used for making cogs in stone mills machinery because ground flour could ignite if you just had metal on metal but fruit wood cogs use to prevent this.

Richard - get that chain sharpened! Or a new chain! Lol... 🤣🤣 Get yourself a stihl 2in1 easy file... makes sharpening a breeze! And yes, a blunt saw tends to burn or has fine sawdust.. a sharp one is big chunky shavings/ slithers..

Authorisation for use of creosote as a biocidal product in GB expires on 31 October 2023 (including N. Ireland) but in EU member states the expiry date is 29 March 2024. An application for a further 5-year extension in both geographical areas has been made by creosote manufacturers.

The UK REACH Regulation allows creosote to continue to be applied to wood for “industrial or professional use”, including on railway sleepers, telegraph poles, and certain types of fencing, as well as for agricultural purposes and in harbours and waterways. A guidance note on the use of creosote and creosote-treated wood (PDF, June 2023) from the Wood Protection Association, a trade body, has further examples. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the regulator for health and safety in Great Britain, has noted that for these uses, essential timbers are in contact with the ground and “the service life of the treated wood is critical to safety”. The UK REACH restriction does not ban industrial uses of creosote in all public places. So, for example, it is still possible for a telegraph pole to be treated with creosote and installed on a pavement.

I'd say it is similar to the system used on ride on lawnmowers with them micro switches thingys. How old is the tractor? This is the nuisance with modern vehicles these days. Non of this on the fergie 😅. Did he tell you Rich what the actual fault was,or was it an electronic item or something. OH you answered a question I was going to ask about sharping the chain, you do it your self.

Where is your PPE? Could do with getting Farmer P to sharpen your chainsaw. I use an electric one a lot of the time now and they are brilliant. We run a Community Forest of 700acres so mostly professional operators.

Those kind of problems can be very difficult to find the cause of. In the 60s we didn't have electronic devices in tractors. It's the same with modern cars. Need computer training to diagnose the problem.
