My frustration with this, is how do you get “industry experience” (aside from freelancing) when everyone is requesting 3+ years industry experience even for junior roles? As much as i would love to start right off the bat as a freelancer, I know I personally learn best when I can work alongside those with more experience as I tend to absorb their techniques and efficient habits like a sponge! That is how I was able to advance quickly in the trades industry without additional schooling.

What he says to the young person is correct but...here in Greece things are not easy and as a person in my 20s whenever i have been in an interview for a job, that i know for a fact i can do the job, that is why i applied to the job, they treated me like I'm an amateur. And is not because I'm not confident, or that i don't have a good portfolio or a resume. It's that companies dont value the young people. Because they think, that they have to spent time and money to people that in their minds are unqualified, although they can see the experience on paper and on the portfolio. I'm not even talking about freelancing, because real freelance doesn't exist. So yeah i believe what he says, that you should know your worth and you should ask what you deserve, but you have to take in consideration your environment.

I want to applaud those young men for being ambitious. I grew up in an environment where ambition was not applauded, but mocked, so It can be easy to give up when you are young. As Chris said, you can achieve anything. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

jonathangonza Yes, unfortunately. It can be very painful and destructive. Support is very important. If you can't get support from your loved ones, the best is to let It go and try to find someone who is not going to project their failures onto you. I was thought from very young age that nothing good will ever come to me, that I will always struggle. The damage done got deeply rooted. In that case, you have to practise mindfulness to minimise any possible future damage since It is very hard to change something you learned very early on. And to let go of the anger or any resentment. People around you sometimes just don't know any better. In their minds, they think they are protecting you.

until you prove everyone that you are best at something in that way that you can have a stable career without any risk like every normal job , everyone will have doubt in you it doesn;t matter if they are your parents or friends because everyone wants you to be secure in this time like having a stable job / paycheck / insurance / starting your own family.

Here’s the clear answer, do the work. If you want to be known as the expert, do 5 case studies a week on real, local businesses in your area. Tag them in it. (If it’s good, they’ll share it or contact you). And another thing, know the client you are trying to pursue. Timothy the business owner of Dark Pikachu Tv on KZbin with 9k subscribers will not pay $10k for a website. However, Brittany the marketing manager from Herbal Tea and Steam Therapy will pay $10k for a campaign which includes new landing pages for a website.

I'd rather be perceived as too young than too old. Older workers, regardless of their skills, talents, and flexibility, are at a significant disadvantage in today's youth-dominated, tech-driven culture. Anyone who denies the reality of ageism is uninformed or lying--and definitely younger than 50.

"How can I come across as an expert?" Here's the thing. As a business owner, I look to hire the most connected and relevant person. Which is often a much younger person than myself (as tech is always updating). I just need to know you're reliable for the price, and will deliver a good result. That's all I care about.

Do what chris said and don’t be afraid to share your perspective. If you just stick with it the inevitable will present itself and you’ll wake up one day and you’ll know you’re a badass lol! @@stephaniemay9090 Thats true, people do that often. But, most people lie and use people's trust by telling them false things about themselves. The karmic cycle works in a way where soon someone will do the same with them. A proper course would be to promise people a higher reward for the risk that they would take on by hiring you. Or even better; address the risk, and work your way around it. For example: when I first started off as a designer and was interviewing at my first job, I told them confidently that I know that I am talented but I don't have the necessary proofs to support it... How about I work a month for free, and if I'm able to prove myself, you take me in? The company had literally nothing to lose, and when a person has learnt the initial ropes within an org they would rather hire that person than look for another outside and train them. It's sad that people are not willing to pay the required price for anything and just want shortcuts. It tends to catch up and bite in the rear pretty soon. 🙃

Best advice for young people who are passionate and are in love with the culture of design is to commit to however long it takes while also committing yourself to do the best work possible. This will drastically cut down how long it will take to stand out. There’s always a need and when you become a person that people are talking about, the work will find you. But don’t rush it. Concentrate on the craft of design. In the meantime, network your ass off. And the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to be confident. A mediocre confident design is going to be far more successful than many brilliant designers with no confidence. You’re designing for people to solve people problems in a design context. Understand people, understand who you are trying to reach, ask questions of your clients in an empathetic way to solve THEIR problems. Use your creativity to align the tools and elements to craft possibilities. You’re going to have terrible clients in the beginning and only do work for terrible people if you don’t. Your value is far more than how great your design looks. If you can identity areas of potential and the client is serious about the work, they’ll listen and they’ll thank you for uncovering areas to work on. And they will pay you. Don’t be afraid of doing work for less money in the beginning but use every project as an opportunity to land bigger and better projects. Understand that you’re competing against a crowded field and only the people most willing to work harder because they have an undying passion are going to make it through the tough times. If you want a formula for quick success, it’s not going to happen, unless you have rich friends who will hype you up as their designer friend who kicks ass. Most of us won’t have that. So work, work, work, and work on your confidence. If your client feels rewarded, they’ll spread the word about how amazing it was to work with someone as talented as you.

I get what he's saying about trying to look like the professional charging a lot being/looking so young. Although I agree your work will speak for itself, you can't always expect people just to find you through your work online. You Will have to visit businesses, set up meetings and sell yourself especially when your coming up. My best advice for his question would to look professional and be confident when your meeting with people. Have a portfolio to show for and never negotiate on your prices because you lower your worth at that point. You don't need every job you need the right ones.

Mr. Chris Do, at first glance, is the type of mentor we think we typically get in 9-5 job. We generally hate and cringe at what they say and look past through it. Maybe because, we think we know better. It's okay to think that way, this is a media platform, KZbin, we can investigate and learn further of Chris. Even if his exact words are said by other speakers gazillion times. What sets Chris apart from them is how convincingly, intimidatingly confident he is at what he says! That's why some haters leave batshit comments here, that what he says is just bull. The problem why we have this perspective, some mentors only show sh*t at the surface, copy others, and doesn't encourage growth nor exemplify this internally and outwardly with themselves. I don't like mentors like Gary Vee, because as much as he's frank, he doesn't show empathy to the struggle of others or how they process things. I thought Chris Do was the same cookie as Gary. Yet, Chris' genuinely LISTENS, and his words are truth bombs. Being Asian, and I think Asians as most of his audience too, he learned the biz the hard way. There's a sense where I need to reach out to him. You think he's mundane and apathetic, then you realize Chris is just secretly a Zen Master. He gives you the real world and how it's crazy and you should definitely not conform to the negative and the mediocrity, and he's got an insane skill of analysis. He always say we should all work hard towards our goal, competitively!!! Invest our time to our passions. Chris listens the most in a room full of people that's why he shimmers like a freaking Buddha. And you dress extremely cool btw Chris

As someone who is young and doesn't have as much experience, I find it hard to evaluate and convey my worth to clients. The problem I have the most is undervaluing myself. My perspective on weaknesses is that there are none. It always depends on the perspective and the circumstances. Chris gave this great example where he turn 'being young' from a weakness to a strength and I believe the same can be done for any trait. Looking for details all the time is a good trait as accountant but might get you stuck as when you have to focus on the big picture as a CEO. Being funny all the time might not be suited in a situation where you have to make serious decisions. So, there are only traits or preferences that fit better in some circumstances than in others. The art is to know how and when to use these traits and to be aware of the consequences.

I switched to that from studying architecture & industrial design, getting random design jobs that were not super related to my 2 degrees, being unemployed a few times. I didn't have direct academic UX/UI experience, I had done a couple of websites - that's it. I built up my professional confidence, worked on believing in myself, saw my value and worth, that me asking many questions and the RIGHT questions and connecting the dots was of great value and I jumped into it and now recruiters are chasing me for once AND I freelance too on top of it. I don't just build e-commerce websites, honestly Wix does a better job at that than me, and that would bore me. I am still missing technical aspects but that's the least important part. I work on complicated projects (car tech, medical applications, train track applications, etc.) and understanding that and boiling down the goals of the project to best suit the users. I'm excited for everyone to embark on their journey, a big thing is believing in yourself.

Rhetoricsis the soooooo important..the power of words !!! The words you pick when crafting a sentence can give you an outcome as different as day and night. I like this video a lot. For the longest was under the impression I needed to pick a creative path and I struggled with myself on picking one. My problem is I love being creative PERIOD. I AM A CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVER!!! Thanks Chris!!!

Don't. If you don't have experience, you aren't an expert. Acting like you are just means you're the stereotypical smarmy hack that gives marketing a bad name. You're the problem. If you don't want to be a smarmy hack, EARN experience. EARN your way up. Tell the truth. Lying isn't how you build long term success.

I love Crish and his thought. No weakness for you! You must be saint then 🙂. You see success and happiness only in working for ppl in world. I feel so at least. There divinity part and spiritual aspect also to work for. Else happiness is bound not to come. I think this is your weakness. Please forgive me if I said something wrong.

I feel that it doesn’t matter how old you are, that you have the opportunity to learn something new from every person you interact with, however big or small small that piece of information is. I learn from students everyday and they are from 11 to 18 years of age, they can approach tasks in a way I’ve not considered, or teach me things that are a part of their culture, even something as small as the meaning of a new slang word being used by them. We are always learning, and age doesn’t matter when it comes to the teacher you learn from if they teach you something you didn’t know and now previously.

Hi Chris, why do you say that they're double your age in an attempt to highlight the importance of experience when earlier you said that it didn't matter if a person was 7 ,17 or 77? Anyway, I love how you inspire young minds. Literally no word that leaves your mouth goes to waste. Have you written any books?

Would love to hear this question answered but for creatives who do have a lot of experience but it's, maybe, the limitted, maker-space kind of experience. The mental switch is quite a bit different when you're more entrenched in that identity. TLDR: Mid-career mental pivotting: series waiting to happen right there 😉

Im very creative in the field of science and i know that my creativity does not limit to that field. I want to pursue my career in astrophysics but the thing is living in Pakistan you need to have a lot of money to follow these kind of passions. That is why i decided to explore my creativeness in the graphic designing world and support my major career choice. Your thoughts on this??

hey Chris, I found your channel 3 months ago and I can't stop watching a video after another. really good content, thx for sharing it. Now I have this question. I started learning logo design about a year ago in a slow kinda way. cauz I'm studying engineering in college. so, in my college part of the year I may practice making logos a little. while in my holiday I focus a lot on logo design and learning more. my problem now is I don't know good resources to continue studying logo design and I also wanna expand this and study graphic design generally. so what books do you suggest or how should I do it? cauz also in my city there's no good art/design college. so idk, I just rely on youtube videos or some recommended books that Idk if the one who recommend it has a good skill or not, or sometimes when I have some money I go spend it on some courses but they dont provide much information you know.. I hope you understand my situation and provide feedback.

I'm an ACCD from 2000 and this is absolutely true. We focus on design and forget the business side. Know your worth and don't be afraid to fail or lose a client. It's part of the learning process. The only rule is to always give your best work/design because you can always look back and say you produced your best and the client didn't have the vision/budget/integrity or wsa just cheap to pay you what you were worth. But your work will eventually bring clients who will pay for your skill/worth.

I am a stay at home mom and working for a graphic design firm. I feel like I am more than just $10 an hour. When I took the job two months ago because I feel I don't have experiences and just graduated. Now, I did a few jobs now I feel my value a lot more...I am not sure if I should wait a little bit before asking for more? Does anyone have any idea what I should do? Also, thank you for this video....I made a lot of bad choices when I was young and my family always caution me about working in the art field (not a practical job and I can't provide for my family). I wait so long to get into graphic design and just graduated from design school this year February. I feel like I lost so much time, now I am 28 I feel I am not as good as the young people who already been at this for a while. This is a good reminder that is all in my mindset, need to change it so I can strive better.

12:23 I find very interesting when people who are learning something shares what she/he has being doing because usually they have a lot of enthusiasm and are discovering older resources (books, people keen to that area of interest) as well as new resources because either they go to formal school or read a lot. That's a lot of value. Also you can see in their recent videos how their ideas or concepts about their topic of interest is maturing or shaping for good

Expertise level of Creativity : 1 - Tactical Level : graphic & visual. 2 : Interaction Level : conversation, discussion, relational. 3 : Strategic Level : Branding, Perception, stimulation. As young guns, i used to think that visual is everything. As times goes by, i learn strategic level of creativity is to solve complex problems. When you to try to solve complex (Level 3) problems, that will include interaction and tactical level.

"I don't care what anyone thinks or says".. Um.. Does that include your customer base? Because it is extremely possible to price yourself out of a market. Believing in yourself is positive but things such as markets and data analytics exist to determine this. The astronomical prices given forth and the feel-goody philosophy of "I want to be worth a million dollars so I am" is extremely toxic

@@thefutur so you're assuming that there are infinite markets/customer bases, there is no competition, or that the demand for your services is inelastic (at least for certain clients).. That's not how economics works but you've been extremely successful so props to you, that said, I wouldn't say that to every single 18 year old with hustle mentality and potential bravado
