In a couple months it will be 20 years since I got my Qtek S100, my first touch screen phone that was pretty much everything we have today (before that I used to move around with a PDA HP Jornada 545 and a Sony -T610) time just flies, I remember people still with black and white screens on their phones asking me what was my Qtek and playing MP3s and movies on it

Fondest memory of 'mobile phones' 20-ish years back.. Every 12 months, getting a 'FREE' Upgrade from UK provider, Selling it on Ebay, which covered 100%+ of Annual-Tariff 🎉 Don't think it works like that now!!?? 😢

The blackbury was the ohoen the starter the creep in to the 24 month contracts, then the iPhone, set it the standard for the smartphone. The only smartphone I ever had on a one year deal was the Google G1, it's first ever smartphone. After that year because of the prices smartphones where Vs candy bar phones, they all went onto a two year deal. My wife isn't that bothered about having a new phone each year, so mine and her contract are 12 months apart, so I got a new phone every year. Once I hit about 40, and because phoens are so mature now, I don't really care about having the current one. As they don't really change year on year much. Even on a 2 years basis, you don't really get much change. I have a one plus 7t in my desk draw, and that is almost 6 years old. Because of its 120hz screen it seems as quick as any new phone. And it's got what's left of my favourite os on it, Cyanogen os. So it's a phone I do remember fondly. And I'd have gotten along with it until now, if I did like shiny things so much.

I always loved my Motorola Razr flip phones, so small and cool. Very old skool Star Trek with a modern twist. Later the Sony Ericsson model, that was actually used in a Bond film to set off a bomb!

I’ve still got my Sony Ericsson P800 . What a phone it was . I had a c64 emulator working on it and thought that it couldn’t get any better than that!!

I am a bit surprised that there was no mention of mp3 palyers (or ipods). 2004 was when ipod really started to hit it big. Now of course everyone uses their phone. I think there was a bigger change from 2004-2014 then 2014-2024.

I remember in 1998 getting a Panasonic eb g520 phone. My first phone that did sms. I was sat in the NAAFI with my mates and we was all laughing that sms would never catch on. We couldn't see the point of it. Probably as i think our of my section (8 man team) only two of us had sms. I think we sent out one and only sms to each other that nigth demo'n it. Also then they wad 10p a pop. So very expensive. I think you got about 100mins free talk time, but no free sms then. It was a really good phone for the day that panasonic. Im sure it was my forst phoen that took a mini sim. Before that my phoens took full sim. Full sim for thst that donet know where credit card size.

Downside is that much tech is less well built... more likely to fail. I was looking at zip disks recently and even though only store 100mb the discs still work after over 20 years. If You have something precious? NOT ALL GOOD. Mobile phone take a convenient but most crap picture again a 15 year old Nikon compact which cost £100.

You didn't own a Nokia 8210 did you. Expensive for the day, and I didn't know if a single one that lasted more than 6 months. It was a 32/3310 squeeze into the footprint about the size of a matchbox. The 3210 seems to get forgotten about, that was a great phone, the 3310 was bright out, as it was cheaper to be produced, cheaper materials and a cheaper sale price. The 32 was a great phone, felt better in your hand.

I htink tech was just more exciting than now. You know new stuff coming out every year, or every month. New phones are not exciting anymore, there are barely any new features, just another rectangle. If i had to name two features that were new in cellphones in the past 6 years i'd say they took away the headphone jack and Iphones can now text over satelites (i was uite excited about the latter actuallly)
