@phantompanda984 i think it's meant to be a status situation. Like, she doesn't care about her children, but she cares about herself and her image, and since her children were kidnapped while technically under her "care", then she will be held responsible. Also, the fact that she has to take the time to go pick them up from foster care, in her eyes, shows how much of a hassle they really are to her, and just makes her angrier than she already is.

If I had to guess, he was smiling because his mother is now forever gone and he doesn’t have to be afraid of her.

I think he planned the ending because he didn’t want his mom to come back, whereas his sister did. Seems like he intentionally goaded his mom to go back to the man’s house and confront him, because he knew the man was dangerous and unstable.
