Today we take a look at the very first Backrooms game on the channel! Despite the Backrooms gaining traction for the past few years it went into high gear only a few months ago. Since then many indie games have shown up that take the backrooms setting as its base and expanding on the lore with each their own unique twist. Today we take a look at The Backrooms 1998 which was created by a single developer who also made the great game Trenches. In this story we play a young teen who loves skating that glitches through reality and into the backrooms. There we now have to find our whereabouts and hopefully find a way out of there. But we are not alone in the backrooms. Something is watching us and something is stalking us. It all plays out like a found footage movie and the atmosphere is absolutely amazing. We will be able to come out alive?

The story about Timmy in this game is disturbingly similar to an actual murder back in 1977: the case of Timothy King who had been abducted from his home in Michigan. He was kept for several days and his family did plead for his return, making the comment that his favorite meal was Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Timothy's body was found soon after. An autopsy did reveal that his kidnappers had fed him his favorite meal before killing him.

Basically, the protagonist of the game was a 19 year old who kidnapped a 6 year old boy. Him and his friends tricked the boy to think that they were friends. Then, they gave him is favourite meal, before abusing him chopping both of his arms off and letting him die. They insulted him and made jokes about him too. Now, the main character is suffering in an eternal hell, after breaking his neck from skateboarding. Actions have consequences.

As far as I know it's supposed to be a reference to how in video games you can accidentally clip out of a map and fall through to a lower area, and sometimes to a place that the player is never supposed to access, sometimes to early development areas that were meant to be deleted by the final release. It's sort of a "creepypasta" I believe. So the game is trying to indicate that reality is in fact virtual reality, and of course this is a horror game, so they do it in a creepy way.

It’s a bit of a long story but the backrooms is a bunch of what are called liminal spaces, which are areas that don’t follow frontrooms (earth) physics. There are a bunch of different levels so I’d recommend you look into it on the wiki. It’s an entire community thing where anyone can create a level.

Essentially the backrooms is a concept made in 4chan about a person (noclipping /phasing through the world) and being sent in a infinite liminal space of halls of yellow wallpaper, old carpet floors, and the humm of fluorescent lights above you. The back rooms is pretty much like an infinite maze with an unknown monster possibly lurking in every corner.
