Remember you gotta dodge towards the roar. It's like a projectile. You can't dodge in the same direction. You'll dodge it at first yeah but since you're dodging in the same direction the projectile will still be on you cause you to get hit. Same goes for Tremor, that's why tremors are a pain in the ass to dodge especially me being a side roller. Always dodge towards the moves.

I never knew about the blur screen effect, I always used the left leg method. The monster will pause then lift it's left leg and just before it lands, you dodge. For Quadruped monster (4 legs) it's the forelimbs.

For wyvern monsters (Monsters with 2 legs) and certain quad pedal monsters pull their heads back before roaring you can time your dodge rolls, or dive and block.

most monsters have certain tells that you can use to dodge the roar. eg. fanged/flying wyverns and KT move their left foot forward right before roaring, roll as soon as their left foot touches the ground.

If I remember correctly, that blurred effect actually stops at the edge of a roars range so you can see a roars "bubble". But don't quote me on that cause I might be seeing things.

tldr : if you aren't confident you won't get hit more than once or twice, forget about damage builds, go for utility/survivability builds. 5 minutes in the video, if the shown gameplay at that time is you playing, you're better off with earplug than crit build. META builds are only for people who are confident they won't get hit and will consistently dodge then resume attacking almost right away. If you get hit, you just lost 15 - 20 seconds of dps because you need to walk away, heal and them resume attacking. This happening once or twice during a quest is enough to make crit build less efficient than a build that woul'd have enabled you to evade those hits.

Fulldamage builds will teach you to play better though. Because if you're required to play perfect, you're going to be more likely to achieve that play than when you use all evade skills there are.

For real. He makes a video criticizing the lack of damage with Earplugs build because you're not getting "max damage" and then in a 10 min vid, he is getting hit by every single attack. These are the players that frustrates me the most. If you are not good enough, don't worry about damage, worry about surviving. I'd take a guy who does average damage but can survive an entire fight over the guy with a max dps build and getting carted every minute.

Of course you upload this when I just finished learning by myself. 8:36 "Roar through the dodge" Now I get why GE always roars back at monsters. EDIT: Also to outspace monster roars, they seem to have much less range backwards than forwards (or at least some). So if you are behind the monster you may even outspace it unknowingly. As for blocking roars, block towards the monster's head not at its body. I had to learn that from being under Extremoth ._.

My favorite true combo was the red and blue rathalos quest. Oh yeah it was so fun to deal with. One roared, then the other did as well, head butted to a stun, followed by a tail whip and head butt to first faint. Revived by palico just to be charged into a headbutt again for faint. So much fun.

When dodging certain monster roars, another great visual que is the monster steps with it's left leg. You dodge right when that happens. A good example is Ratholos.

Nergi divebomb is undodgeable at some ranges with certain weapons, and kushala is probably one of the biggest offenders of roar true combos in the game. Should probably mention those.

Jumping with IG to reduce the total stun-time from roars is a great tactic and I'm glad you mentioned it here! However, for the worst offenders (especially Teostra/Lunastra and Kushala), their roars are generally so fast that they'll catch you before you can vault up into the air. For these monsters, at least while you're practicing/soloing, I would highly recommend Evade window 2 or 3 to learn the timing. It's possible with 0 evade window, but the timing is much tighter at this point.

Surprised you didn't mention Nergigante's roar and dive combo. I've seen many people die to it when he's tempered. I'm pretty sure that when he's released as an arch tempered, that combo will be a guaranteed one hit kill. Unless you have guts/felyne moxie.

@TheGameconomist In regards to out-spacing a roar, there's a trick that I found really helps if you have and play Generations Ultimate. It works for monsters that World has in common, but it helps to figure out roar ranges for the monsters that haven't been in other games. In Generations/Ultimate, monster roars have a VISIBLE AREA OF EFFECT. What you're looking for is the vertical speed lines emanating from the ground. When you're outside of the monster's roar range, you can see a clear and visible border. What I do is remember the approximate range, and when attempting to out-space, I use that data. It, surprisingly, works.

I love dodging roars, it's such a rewarding game mechanic that i need to learn it. It feels so god damn good to dodge a roar after 300+ hours into the game getting literally roar chained sometimes not being able to move for 10 to 15 seconds or somewhat like that. I guess im gonna start off with easy to time roars with the evasion mantle and once this sits doing many tier 2 investigations ima try my luck on the tempered ones since i tend to have a hard time to dodge those roars...

1. Vaal Hazak's roar is also too long if you want to roll through it effectively without any further levels of Evade Window. Furthermore, I disagree about Vaal's "threat level" when it comes to roars as the most that could happen would be it dropping on you. On the other hand- 2. Kushala Daora is far more dangerous in that regard as its short roar results in the same stun animation for you, which in turn gives it more than enough time to do an attack on you. Other than that... a good video. I particularly enjoyed the hunter in the full Bazelgeuse gear. =D

TheFirstDarkAero teostra is dangerous man. After roar he will rush towards you and hit you with his head like a truck and theres no way to dodge since youre still in the stun animation. Kushala on the otherhand still base on rng if it uses the 1hit airblast attack but mostlikely he will just fly and summon tornado. Teostra will just straight up hit you with hes head lol

Charge Blade can guard point roars. Kind of a subset of blocking, but it's helpful to know that when CB blocks or GPs the roar, you can go straight into your super with Y+B (like most attacks as long as you have a reasonable amount of guard skill level, via the skill itself or via charged shield and the GP). That long roar animation makes this a great time to get the super off and usually land it really well.

problem is: with GS i really want to have earplugs so I can charge my weapon while it is roaring, dodging wont help me there. and for each roar thats a full combo so damage wise I think its actually better to go earplugs there

Friendly reminder, Gameconomist has been playing the Monster Hunter series for quite some time. If you're a new player don't worry about going full meta damage build. Wait until you really know a monster or at least have a good grasp of them before going balls out damage focus. The largest loss of damage is carting. Build SOME surviability into your builds, just slotting 2 Health Boost (vitality) gems into a build at the cost of maybe some affinity or attack power. For Lunastra I'd actually suggest focusing more on surviability than damage since she is a PITA. Earplugs 5 isn't AS useful as it on on Teostra but it can help. I'd actually recommend subbing in 3 pieces of Kushala since she deals with a lot of wind pressure. Also what he says about Peak Performance. Note that it really does require a speed runner or someone with a high health recovery to get the most out of it. Most of the tougher fights deal tick damage which means that it can be largely a useless skill.

for flying wyvern it's all the same: they wind up the roar, their right foot goes up and you press the dodge button at the second they step foreward with that right foot. it's pretty easy to learn from rathalos and rathian.

Finally someone mentioned the importance of "ROAR", Also you should know Kirin or any of the piscine wyverns don't have roar. Max earplug is essential with GS or hammer or CB, you don't want your final attack to go miss.

Yep, there are some exceptions for me, but almost all of my builds also have earplugs 5. Its amazing how often I see people going into a hunt with all damage, no earplugs, health or resistance of any kind, and surprise surprise they are often (certainly not always) the first to cart. Certainly, play how you want to play, have fun, but meta builds aren't for everyone, and that's fine as well.

Once you get hit and are on the ground in lunatras supernova don't move even if you burn, that could save your life cause you didn't get hit by the second blast as long you stay down.

The roar isn't what gets people killed by Lunastra's nova but that God dang wind pressure. I prefer to run Lunastra "Styx" specifically when fighting her as I can heal the team whilst we book it out of the blast zone not remotely hindered. Also helps that it does have attack and defense up s (L when re-perfomed) which helps with damage output and handling Lunastra's physical attacks.

Certain monsters I just kind of picked up dodging the roars naturally. Teo gave me trouble for a while so I ran him a ton and just started doing it. I still get caught off guard a good bit. Luna I try to keep myself positioned in an area where if she roars and I get caught, she’ll likely miss me when she swipes. Strangely the one roar which screws me the most is Kushala’s. Nasty comboed swipe gets me a lot. Kush is just a pain with SNS

For Charge blades, roars can be guard pointed into SAED/AED. Your better off learning how to do that than losing damage output by putting earplugs in your equipment.

Yeah that argument of because I’m not stunned I’m doing damage is partly why I just opt for earplugs on a lot of builds. That and I main charge blade and I got sick of starting my big discharge and suddenly the monster roars and I get knocked out of it. I’ve had a lot less fun with GenU for this reason earplugs is harder to build while still doing damage though Valor style helps it just isn’t a perfect solution. I digress the “just dodge it” argument is a cop out to me a lot of weapons do t have that option sometimes due to animation locks or kinda crappy side effects of taking a defensive action. I also don’t feel bad building it unlike a lot of other resistances because nearly every monster can roar unlike how only some can tremor, poison, burn, etc.
