Smoker's cry I think, if I remember rightly Deirdre always sounded that way when crying. Same when laughing, my grandma had a similar kind of laugh and she smoked most of her life. Anne Kirkbride sounded the same in real life, I believe heavy smoking contributed to her death, remember seeing her in a documentary about her life and she did the smoker's laugh :)

Ken was always a cheater during his and Deirdre's marriage and his son Peter has followed in his footsteps. The Barlow family has always been falling apart over the years and will probably do so for many more years to come, similarly with the Platt's and the Grimshaw's
