For those recommending I am Setsuna, I found Oninaki a very awesome and more enjoyable game from the same people. It's roughly 8-12 hours, and can be shorter depending on if your trying to max out all your spirit companions. That game deserves way more love.

Oh, I wouldn't put Costume Quest anywhere near a list of recommendations. I have a really open mind to childish aesthetics, and I also prioritize charm over other more technical aspects of a game. Even then, I was bored out of my mind by the gameplay...

Seems like an interesting list. Mario RPG for snes I'm actually playing it again for the 3rd or 4th time after many years on my phone. I just play it an hour here and there and just reached Nimbus village. Child of Light and I am setsuna I played and beat and are both amazing small games. Can't say much about the others though since those are the ones I actually didn't play so thanks for the recommendations. Costume party I heard a lot about but it never looked that appealing to me but maybe I'll have to give it a try. Yokai watch however I don't think I'll like. I tried watching the anime but it's not for me. But good job on compiling these lists. There's so many jrpgs out there.

I played Child of Light and it's pretty good, hard to believe it's even a Ubisoft game at times especially now. I have been wanting to play Super Mario RPG for a while now but I could never get around to it because I find SNES games not to be my comfort zone. Costume Quest seems interesting though. Never there were so many short rpgs.

Celestian Tales: Old North is a great package. It has a Main story of about 10-12 hours and a standalone DLC that is about 7-8 hours. Very grounded fantasy setting reminiscent of Suikoden with fantastic plot and cast of characters. The combat and progression are pretty diet though. Ara Fell is like 16-20 hours RPG with a pretty memorable cast and a cool progression system.

I’m probably going to get I am Setsuna, I have Yokai Watch but kind of fell off of it for other games. As for a game I would recommend that I’m currently playing, Golden Sun is fun and according to HLTB it clocks in at about 20hrs granted it’s technically only half a game still a really good time

Great video. I’m always looking for shorter games to play alongside bigger titles. My only constructive criticism might be to drop the J off of Videos dealing with games from other countries. It doesn’t bother me but some might get frustrated by it.
@TheGamingShelf4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I guess to me JRPG is more of a style of game rather than a country of origin. Dragon’s Dogma for example is technically a JRPG but design wise it’s much more of a Western style RPG like Skyrim than say something like Persona or Dragon Quest.

@@TheGamingShelf I know what you're trying to say and I'm going to respect your opinion, but this may be one of those things to "agree to disagree". I would compare this to 'anime influenced' cartoons, like Teen Titans, Avatar, RWBY, etc. None of these are anime. But are clearly influenced by, or in the style of anime. Similarly, I am only pointing out that these Western developed RPGs, although influenced by, and in the style of JRPGs, are not JRPGs (by my definition), and thus I would encourage identifying them as such by saying something like "JRPG-like", "JRPG-style" or something similar. That is all. Thank you for discussing though! Sorry to be strict on the point, just my 2 cents ;) *pushes glasses up*

Child of Light is developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Hmmmmmmmm what does it have anything to do with JRPG? It certainly isn't came out from Japanese developer... Costume Quest is a USA game. I just gonna assume you make a typo on your video title instead of whatever conspiracy theory. Having similar artstyle and RPG elements don't make any games into JRPG... grouping unrelated titles into the 'JRPG' ring will offend some people.
@TheGamingShelf4 жыл бұрын
I guess to me JRPG is a style of game at this point rather than country of origin. Cosmic Star Heroine is certainly a JRPG but it was made in the West.

A Japanese style RPG doesn't have to be made by Japanese developers. Lots of Western developers like the style and made games homaging them, like Zeboyd's games.

@@TheGamingShelf they have a unique power and summon system (psynergy and the djinni). There are also powers used on the overworld to solve puzzles (real cool ones at that). Plus, it's a gorgeous game for the GBA with an amazing soundtrack that screams ADVENTURE. And they do a trick to simulate 3D models im battle where they have front and back moving sprites and the camera shifts perspective to simulate 3D. Give it a shot! As a JRPG fan you wont be disappointed!
