Hi, for the last question, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to be the square root of 1-(x)cubed over 4. I tried to rearrange the equation and there is an (x)squared that needs to go somewhere. The estimates for the solution still fall between 1 and 0. Thank you so much for this channel, it has been enlightening for me.

For the question at 16:59, if you were given that equation and asked to rearrange the formula to make x the subject, how would you get x=1-xcubed/4. Please could you explain how rearranging that equation would equal to that iterative formula, as i cant seem to understand. thanks
@catherinejohnson28852 жыл бұрын
the equation has been rearranged incorrectly. the right side of the equation should be square rooted, giving x= sqrt(1-x^3/4). You can check the values at the end as well by substituting them back into the original question. If you use the iteration formula given (the non-square rooted one) and keep pressing the equals button on the calculator until it doesn't change, it gives you something like 0.25, which really is nowhere near 1. If you use the value from the square-rooted iteration formula, it gives you 1.

for the questions where it says show a solution lies between x and x, aren't you meant to look for a change in sign when substituting?...or can you also use your method? thanks
@TheGCSEMathsTutor4 жыл бұрын
You are only looking for a change in sign of the equation in question is equal to zero, then Ofcourse you would be looking for one above zero and ne below zero, this is only one example of one specific question that appeared on an exam recently, the equation in question does not have to be equal to zero to apply an iterative method so watch out for this. If the equation is equal to 5 for example you would be looking for a number above and below 5. Hope this helps! 😁

if you were just asked to create your own iteration formula can you do it in a number of ways as long as you have a single x on the left and everything else on the right in the appropriate form? e.g. if you isolate the x squared term and then square root x = square root(2xcubed - 3)

For the questions - eg: "prove the solutions is between 1 and 2" - I've seen a method where you make the equation equal zero and then as long as your two solutions are either side of 0 that's proof (the sign has changed). Is that an appropriate method?

Hi Sir, I was just doing the iGCSE Pearson Edexcel January 2019 Paper 4HR Higher tier maths paper as practice for my exam next week and i was just wondering how you do question 20. It says, Find the value of n such that 4n x 8n+1 = 16? (the n's are meant to superscript). It looks as though its probably quite simple but i just don't know what to do. PS, I have been watching your videos lately and they have been a huge help, especially the one covering all the Grade 6-9 questions.
@Cameronbacn2 жыл бұрын
Surely I’m sorry this is too late but would it not just be 8n x 4n which is 32n^2 square root the 16 so it looks like 32n+1=4then divide 3/32?

For the last question: I'm aware it's probably that the formula was just rearranged incorrectly (since it would be the formula for x² not x), but if we DID get a question like that would we need to square root the answers we got for x₁ and x₂ to find the estimate? Thank you sir for everything you do, I can't imagine how many people's grades you've saved (mine included)! Edit: figured out my mistake
@TheGCSEMathsTutor Жыл бұрын
The formula is rearranged correctly! In order to make an x the subject part has been factorised by x which has reduced the powers. You don’t need to do any form of rooting though as it’s x= 😁
