Every other voice has attempted to mimic or recreate John Colicos. You can’t top what is already perfect. The other aspect is the script. His scripting was second to none. No one has written with such menacing poetry since that series.

Nailed it on the scripting aspect. Apocalypse from the 1990s X-Men TAS was so well written. The lines he had were absolutely fantastic and of course John Colicos delivered them with absolute brilliance. It's amazing to me how a series that was made for kids still remains the best on-screen adaptation of the X-Men comic books story to date. Apocalypse was just one of the elements that was so brilliantly made in that series. "Exterminate the vermin!!!" 🤣🤣

Agreed though the writers of the series stated that their intention was never to create the series for kids but to appeal to all ages, that’s what makes XMen so great. They didn’t dumb it down but went with the serious tone and stories of the comic, bringing humanities emotion and problems of today while adapting to the seriousness of todays world and history

Colicos has it, hands down. That voice, the enunciation, the gravel at the bottom of his vocal performance , the gravitas... he set the bar for the character. It sounds like everyone else tried to mimic him, but they couldn't get the gravel in the voice that he had. You can tell they even went as far as running the voices through some effects. I was give props for the courage of the last dude. It sounds like he was thinking "No way can I imitate Colicos. Let me just make my own interpretation of the choice. "

John Colicos, obviously, but I'm pleasantly surprised by Smith. Definitely would want him to voice Apocalypse again in future, most of the others are way too mellow. McGonagle is good as well, but he sounds more like a mephisto type villain rather than the god complex ridden self styled world cleanser that is Apocalypse.

I really don't think anyone (in good conscience that is) can deny that John Colicos provided the best voicing (not just voice) for Apocalypse. I mean, he managed to capture that mad, self obsessed, malignant narcissistic spirit of a genocidal dictator so well. Perfectly in fact. "I will purge the Earth of these benighted humans!!!" - that was flawless perfection, really. John Colicos provided the best voicing for Apocalypse. May his soul rest in peace.

Agree with everyone. John Colicos set the bar. A bar that could never be matched. Not to say the others were poor. They were good in their own way. But they chose well for XMen TAS. It was not the same for XMen-Apocalypse. While it was interesting, I felt they had made Apocalypse a throw away villain.

There's something special about John Colicos' performance that the others simply miss. I think it goes beyond the voice. The cadence and delivery makes you think...oh wow, this character has been driven mad by his own power and ACTUALLY believes the stuff he preaches.

Lines starting at 03:24 have definitely a bad ass FX. If all his voice was like that throughout the movie instead of that "tamed" dialogue voice, I would say the movie version. It has that strange polyphonic sound a god-like entity should have. I'll go with the movie version. And the game (X-Men vs SF) version is too dry here in these extracted samples but it also has a strong feeling to it. 1) Movie version 2) X-Men vs SF version. and then comes the rest.

He stands out as one who seems like what would be a realistic portrayal of someone who’s lived throughout the millennia. The most difficult aspect of voicing Apocalypse is finding the right balance between the tragic albino mutant slave child, the delusional God-complexed tyrant and the Social Darwinist cult leader without coming off as too robotic or melodramatically evil.
