As a teenager I played the hymns just about every morning at school on the piano. I didn't realise at that time how they etched into my soul, words and harmonies that all these decades forward I know them all and of course have always enjoyed singing 40 days and 40 nights as i t is such as wonderful hymn. Wonderful performance here. You cannot beat counter tenors (and I write that myself as a pretty good church soprano in the UK and chamber choir singer).

such a wonderful hymn - dignified, and stately. Great words and a deceptively simple tune yet with awesome harmony. Thank you for posting.

It reminds me of castrates, except by nature or one of its anomolies. It really is the "purest voice?"

The German Lutheran hymn tune tradition is so expressive. Harmonic complexity could be indulged because of the ubiquitous familiarity with congregational singing; singing was such a formative part of Lutheran culture. Bach's chorale harmonisations are of course the paragons. But I think my favourite example may be Cruger's majestically lively Easter tune for Jesus, Meine Zuversicht.

The simplicity of the words is meaningful. I have sung this w/my church choir. Your harmonizing is beautiful. The acoustics are perfect for all of your pieces. Thank you.

Yes, an exquisite rendering of this lovely hymn/anthem, which my church choir always sang during Lent. Loved the featuring of two soloists. I did much the same, singing one verse myself (baritone) and assigning another to our lead soprano, with full choir humming underneath. Would that we had done as well as this marvelous ensemble!

1 Forty days and forty nights you wast fasting in the wild; Forty days and forty nights Tempted, and yet undefiled. 2 Sunbeams scorching all the day, chilly dewdrops nightly shed; prowling beasts about your way; stones your pillow, earth your bed. 3 Then if Satan on us press, Flesh or spirit to assail, Victor in the wilderness, Grant we may not faint nor fail! 4 So shall we have peace divine; Holier gladness ours shall be; Round us, too, shall angels shine, Such as served You faithfully. 5 Keep, O keep us, Savior dear, Ever constant by your side, That with you we may appear At th'eternal Eastertide.

Superb as ever. If my recollections are correct, we used to go into the major key on the last verse and sing it to the tune of the lovely bynn "Loving shepherd of thy sheep".
