I review my 2022 RAM 2500 power wagon and talk about 5 things I hate about the truck. No Cummins diesel engine option is obviously the most talked about negative about this power wagon but there are other things that I don't like either
1. The fuel economy on this truck is absolutely garbage, its terrible. I'm averaging about 12MPG and that's mostly country driving. the 6.4 hemi is a good engine but it is thirty and loves to burn alot of fuel. so make sure if you buy this ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi you have a lot of fuel budgeted
2. electronic 4wd switch sucks. until recently these power wagon trucks could only come with 4wd floor shifters to make sure it always worked. electronic shifter are fine but are more likely to fail when you need them most off-road!
3. side steps. as you guys saw in the video these side steps were mounted directly onto the bottom of the rocker without anything regard for damaging the pain. this truck was 2 weeks old and already had paint damage and had rubbed through to bare metal. this would have rusted in a year and probably completely rusted out in 5-10 years
4. the payload sucks on these ram 2500 power wagons. maximum payload of 1500 lbs is pretty bad. but you can't have an awesome off-road machine and have crazy stiff suspension either. so it is what it is. and this goes for the max towing capacity of 10,500 also. the suspension is too soft to handle any more
5. Hemi tick. the dreaded hemi tick is also an issues on the 6.4 hemi's. obviously this truck is brand new and there is no tick but it sucks that these engine are know for that because it's a big job if your hemi engine develops it!

I took delivery of a '21 PW in July. I ordered Amp Research Power Steps. I had to wait almost five months for them, but they were worth the wait! I will step up to 35's, because they will fit with plenty of clearance. I went with the 4x4 transfer case stick in the floor. If it ever tries to get away from me, I can reach down and pop everything into neutral. I have heard that the hellcat oil pump will solve the ticking issue. I'm at 5k miles, and ticking is what it does. The surround cameras are what I find most useful, in many situations! Gas mileage is what it is. It will go almost anywhere, and that is what the price of admission is all about, anyway, with this beast. It is as heavy as an African Elephant, and you notice this when you apply the brakes. I love it! No buyer's remorse, here. It's probably worth more than I paid for it. When you see a RAM with the WARN winch up front, then you know it's a Power Wagon. I got the sticker delete option with mine. Got a HEMI?

My 2022 RAM 2500 Laramie 4x4 Hemi is my daily driver at 10-12 MPG which I expected. Many trips are short so the gas engine warms up nicely in cold weather. I do have a 3100 pound payload capacity; one of the reasons to buy a 2500 rather than a 1500. No off-road and no trailering is planned. No RV hauling in the future. Thanks for your review.

You are half right about the suspension and how heavy it is in the front end, but the big part is also the oil pan sits too low in the diesel and because of how long the inline-6 is with all of its radiator components and cooling components , it also would take away the winch in the front bumper if you really want a diesel off-road vehicle and have a lot of money then I encouraged to go for the AEV Prospect 2 with very limited being made but sitting on a 40in tire it is a diesel version of the Power Wagon but almost triple the price for what this truck is for the price that it is it is the best affordable most capable off-road vehicle to date from a production line for a 2500 chassis, since you live in Canada if you want a good tip to for fuel mileage when you go to take a long trip or even a trip out of town try to plan your route to stay off of the highway and don't go any more than 80 to 90 km an hour because that will equal out to your 1500 having the 321 final gear at 125 km an hour it is not much of a difference

I have a 2021 Power Wagon. It purposefully comes with gas only. The Cummins is WAAAY too heavy given its capability. I replaced the suspension with the Carli Pintop system with the radius arms and it's a completely different truck. Moved to 37's when I upgraded the suspension. I then added a Go Fast Camper to the back with the tent on the top and it's perfect at this point. There are factory rock sliders that look ok. They're tight against the body but I have them and they work great.

Daystar airbag cradles.you need the cradles to keep your articulation. Amp power steps. I have a 36 ft 14000 lb fifth wheel RV. Tows beautifully with the hitch and airbag setup. 315x70x17 duratracs. Only thing that does suck is mpg. 7 mpg towing the RV. Next gonna do some engine work.

wicked set up! I think I'd love to put a truck bed camper in the back. but I'll probably have to juice up the suspension back there like you did to hold a camper and have that overland look. I mean in terms of fuel mileage when towing. my 1500 when towing 5,500 lbs was getting 9MPG through the prairies (flat ground). I just think gas engines in general drink fuel when towing. I've heard the Eco boost's LOVE the fuel when towing.

@@TheGettyAdventures Yah my 3.5 gets around 7.5-9 avg is 8 when towing our TT. It kind of makes sense tho, since it is always under boost while towing. I'd say it tows around 5psi and slight inclines bring it up to 10. So that basically adds to displacement and boosted vehicles tend to run slightly rich anyways.

The real reason the Cummins doesn't come in a power wagon is the intercooler wouldn't fit because of the winch is built into the bumper where the intercooler would go. And the reason they're getting away from the floor shift is you still have the electronics that run the center axle disconnect in the front end so either way you're still relying on electronics. The hemi tick on the 5.7s is from broken exhaust studs the 6.4 doesn't have that problem. The MDS is what wipes out the lifters.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
fair enough about the electronic shifter. I just figured one less thing to worry about. I heard that about the cummins but a chrysler rep was talking to me when I bought it and he mentioned the biggest reason was the weight. but obviously there were other issues as well like you pointed out. and yes the 6.4 don't have the manifold stud issues (thank god) but I'm not worried about the hemi tick, good maintenance and potentially getting rid of the mds system should do the trick!

Awesome video these powerwagons are such bad ass trucks but #4 was the reason I didn't go for a powerwagon and got a tradesman gas job. Payload rating in my regular 2500 hemi is 3301, I needed that payload rating more than offroad goodies. Also- that factory powerwagon winch mount bolts right into a gas 2500 and I added that to mine and have that factory hidden winch in it l, just a tip for anyone thinking about doing it. Great video again beautiful truck congrats the only true heavy-duty off road pick up truck on the market today, As far as oil type and quality goes for hemi 5.7L ,6.4L engines , FCA Engine Design doesn't allow oil to be lubricating lifters enough with low ZDDP PPM content in todays oil and 5k-10k intervals, So basically you have to treat this engines with better oil that contains higher ZDDP and extra Molbendum disulfate(mos2) or just add some ZDDP oil additive and MOS2 additive, Personally i use 0W-30 Penzoil Euro/SHELL HELIX made in germany high end synthetic oil with 1/4 Redline brake in oil additive and Liqui moly MOS2 1 1/2 bottle along with K&N high performance oil filter, 6K-8K intervals, Bullet proof combo.

I have two 392 Hemi trucks and mainly commented so that I could give thanks for the oil pump suggestion. Thank you Fabian. My suggestion would be to not let the engine idle unnecessarily . Everyone should be able to agree with that. Another thing that I do with my 2020 2500 Lone Star Edition is use the gear reduction for highway so that all eight silinders continually get oil and don't shut down. To do this whenever I set up the cruise the next button I push is the - gear one time and watch for 8/8 in the gear range. In this setting the transmission acts normally stop and go. As for the steps. My 2500 didn't come with steps but AMP Research folding steps are in my opinion the cats meow . My other truck has been swapped with a 392 from a 2012 SRT-8 Challenger and again I keep the idling to a minimum. It's a 2005 single cab Ram and man is it a blast to drive !

I honestly find the MDS system on this power wagon rarely comes on when I'm cruising. with 4.10 gears when I'm going 100+ (60 mph) the truck needs to much power to keep moving so the MDS system is only really on when I slow down or am trailing somebody. in comparison my 2017 1500 had the MDS system on all the time when cruising. but is also had 3.21 gears keep those RPMS nice and low

I love my 2017 Ram Powerwagon. So glad I got rid of my diesel 2500 almost 2 years ago. Diesel is now 50 cents more per litre currently in Alberta and that along with maintenance costs on a diesel eliminate any reason to have a diesel unless you’re towing with it like daily. My Powerwagon has a manual floor shift and if I keep my foot out of it I get 15-16 MPG (Imperial). I tow my 7500 lb holiday trailer about 4 days per year so a gas truck is just fine for me… Love my truck!

Agree on your comment on side steps. Two options I would consider. power running boards or steps on each doors. We know the 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi will be gone in a few years. Yes the floor mounted 4x4 shift lever has proven it's self. You can't stop progress! One advantage of the electronic shifter frees up a bit of space for a third passenger up front even though it's not much.

@TheGettyAdventures, when you mentioned the hemi tick, do they have mds delete that you could add? I have an 09 1500 and just rebuilt the top half of the block. I’m no expert, but I did the mds delete replaced the camshaft among other things. The tick comes over time because 4 cylinders shut down at cruising speeds. From what I understand is that those lifters keep friction with the camshaft and don’t get the lube they need. This was happening at about 172,000 miles. Everything runs good now, gas mileage went down a bit though.

Great video. I agree with almost everything you said. But the so called hemi tick can come from broken exhaust manifold bolts, still a pain in the shorts, but lots cheaper than a cam. The lifter issue represents less than 5% of all the hemis produced. Think of all the cars with hemis too that don’t have this issue. So like you said, keep the oil clean, don’t idle it to much, and you should be fine for minimum 200,000 miles, or 320,000 kms.

Beautiful Truck. Out of curiosity if the payload and softer suspension of the power wagon is an issue why wouldn't you look at a F250 7.3 with the tremor pkg?
@JohnSmith-ev1sm
@JohnSmith-ev1sm 2 жыл бұрын
One of the big differences between tremor and powerwagon is the suspension and flex. The tremor doesn't do nearly as good there. So you pick, either excel at offroad (powerwagon) or excel at towing (every other 3/4 ton). The tremor is also a ford, which judging by other comments from Alex, well he's not a fan. Truck buyers are loyal/picky. I personally don't like the looks of the fords, and the ride quality is poor as is the interiors.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
great question! So the reason I went with this power wagon despite the low payload was because of the off-road options, the tremor package doesn't even have a front locking diff let alone a winch. the tremor package basically include a rear locking diff, bigger 35" tires and some off-road crawl and hill decent features and a cool decal whereas the power wagon is a much more off-road dedicated truck. the reason why I would of liked a bigger payload was because I think it would be awesome to throw a truck bed camper in the back and do some overlanding. but with only 1500lbs of payload it limits you to super light small truck bed campers. with all that said, the off-road capability is what I valued and this PW is the best in market.

fords are just not my thing. However I did look at buying a ford raptor because they are awesome but 100k for a truck was just too much lol and yes exactly the power wagon is very unique and its low payload is why it's so good off-road

Not sure how many people know this but the manual, on the floor, transfer case shifter is STILL an option on the newer Power Wagons. If the Level 2 Equipment Group is added to the truck then it defaults to the electronic transfer case shifter on the dash. But I do agree it should remain on the floor regardless of what Equipment Group is added.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Power Wagon - Who Doesn’t!?!? - That being said - truck comparisons are fun! Lol - As with any specialized vehicle, it is compromised, in some areas to be awesome in others. - That’s a big reason why I went with the RAM 1500 Rebel. - The Rebel a rear locker, factory 1” lift, and the same wheels and tires. And my door sticker says it can haul (not tow) 1501 lbs. And I can tow over 15,000lbs. - I don’t get the front locker or the disconnect-able sway bars… I’m okay with that… - And because the Rebel is built on the 1500’s platform, it has the newer revised cabin and frame.

Dodge should actually add a air ride suspension to that thing for the back. For an almost hundred thousand dollar truck it should have a rare airbag suspension and why doesn't Dodge go ahead and put a hybrid system to help with the gas mileage since most the new vehicles are starting to go that route that I'll also give you more torque and power on top of the hemi to make it Better for towing and give you more power like a diesel. Dodge could partner with Toyota for a hemi hybrid system.. 💪🏼

From what i understand the lifters & cam only go bad if you constantly let the eng. idle for long periods of time?? After 3 or 4 minutes put the shifter in neutral & rev. The eng. To 1500 or 2000 rpm's for 4 or 5 seconds & use zmax or a quality high zinc additive.
@TheGettyAdventures

Ya high idle time is not good for these lifters. I also think the oil change interval period is way too long and that causes issues as well. But the lifters failures on the newer trucks seem to be less then the 2009-2015 trucks. In 2016 ram updates the lifters and that seemed to have helped!

More and more evidence suggest lifter failure issue is attributed to a number of factors running into each other. Those being fleet vehicles that run at idle for extremely long periods of time, oil change schedules not adjusted for the idle usage, and most are from 2013 and before which some suggest they were poorly manufactured lifters for those conditions and has been addressed. It's not a "common" issue at all... not like the exhaust manifold "tick" which is much more common. FCA/Stellantis make 1 million Hemi's per year, so just because you hear about a few on the internet doesn't make it common.

You don't buy it to tow stuff. You don't buy it to haul stuff. I paid to have no electric transfer case know. Nothing like grabbing the shifter and putting it in 4 wheel low. Side steps. Valid point. However there easily replaced. As far as gas mileage. Don't buy the truck if you can't afford the. My only complaint is. Goodyear Dura Crap Wrangler tires suck. As do the factory wheels. I have watched a few of your videos now , and you keep saying the same thing. " No payload capacity ". That is nonsense What makes the PW suspension so soft and effects payload /weight rating ? answer : the dual rate springs , the rest of the truck axels , frame everything is 2500 Ram truck. The front radius arms also Have an additional piece to aid in articulation with the disconnect sway bar. Its really a quite inexpensive upgrade to make it have its full payload . Thuren off road makes a single rate front spring, they even make it + 1.5" to level the front and rear . Eibach has a power wagon in there shop right now 2 / 19 / 2023 . they are developing a single rate spring for the Power wagon with a +2" extra length. in the rear: there are 2 different ways you can go. you can get 2500 standard springs which would slightly lower the rear making it a 2500 with a 2" front end correction look. or get a 2500 rear spring with a +2 lift. , Or you could simply use an airlift airbag system in the rear about 500 dollars. With those simple corrections your payload is back. Thuren front single rate spring 370.00 for the pair airlift system 500.00 So for under 1000.00 US you have your payload back. The Cummins issues. The Cummins with intercooler system clashes with the winch, and the dual rate springs < ( weight) If Ram simply ran a single rate 2500 +2" spring and moved the winch to external mount the Cummins could be offered all day long. The only other question would be the articulation with sway bar disconnect vs engine placement. and/or if there E locker system could handle the Cummins torque which actually is a nonsense question as the Torque limiter could be programed to limit that if it was in 4x4. I own a 2020 Power Wagon ( with floor 4x4 shift) < and level 3 package . I drive ( everyday) a 2016 ram 2500 4x4 diesel ( my company truck). I am a powerline worker and i work the desert rurals in the Mojave desert. 4x4 wheeling in the desert is an everyday occurrence. we have to go to the extremes sometimes . and i could use the e-lock front and 2" lift in several occasions a month. Both are awesome beasts. We had the ford before this truck (at work) 2500 diesel , while very capable it is more fragile, the only place it surpasses the Ram is the front seats. My Gosh Ford knows how to make seats ! 5 things I hate on my 2020 Power wagon Good Year tires they SUCK ! ( Getting my new Toyos ) the Bilstein shocks they also SUCK ( just ordered my Fox 2.0s ) Dial a Knob SUCKS ! < stuck with it / but my diesel 2500 company truck has a proper shifter love it ! seat positioning to high by 1" all Ram trucks have this problem / until crappy seat foam breaks down anyway ( i have owned several Rams ) No Deisel option / Fuel mileage

@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
great question. the tremor is really just a normal f250 with a locking diff and bigger tires. ya its got some electronic stuff but mechanically that's it. where as the power wagon has a a whole different suspension system then the normal 2500 as well as a winch in the front both of which make it not possible to have a cummins. the winch wouldn't give enough room for the intercooler and the bigger rad. and like I mentioned in the video the cummins is an extra 1000 lbs heavier then the 6.4, so with the soft suspension it wouldn't support it and having such a heavy front end would suck off-road. the cummins oil pan also sits very low making it vulnerable to damage when off-road. What ram could do it simple add a couple lockers to the normal ram 2500 and throw some electronic off road control at it and you would have a pretty capable truck. but it wouldn't be as capable as the power wagon.

Two things. First, how on earth were you getting 12-13 liters on your 5.7? I get 15-16 city and mixed driving, I only get 12-13 if I go on roadtrips and if I don't go above 90 km/h. We have highways with speed limits of both 110 and 120 in Sweden and at those speeds it's about 15. Is it because my truck is 2012? Do the newer trucks have optimizations that lowers the consumption ever so slightly? Or were the 12-13 liters you were getting simply also when you were doing longer trips? Second, the dreaded hemi tick. I've watched many videos on this and as you say, there's not really a certain factor that causes this. One video says this is seen more on high idle-time vehicles. But on the 5.7 at least, the hemi tick is *NOT* common. I forgot the number but I think it was either 5% or 10% of the engines getting this. I'm hoping it's the same for the 6.4 and I'm hoping you won't get it. As for me, an early symptom is a cylinder misfire code. I had that a couple of years ago. Code reset and never came back so I'm just hoping for the best.

So yes depends on your set up, so a 2012 is going to probably have a 6 speed with 3.55 gearing. my truck had the 8 speed trans with 3.21 gearing, meaning that it naturally is going to be more fuel efficient. the 8 speed trans is going to keep rpm's lower as well as the 3.21 gears. I also drive 20km to work each way on country roads.

and yes the hemi tick is not that big a concern but it is still a common issue on these engines. 5% is still a ton of engine failing. even 1% is a lot. I love these engines don't get me wrong and no engine is perfect! the fords and the chev's have their issues as well but the hemi tick is a real thing and I just hope I have a good running engine!

Oh yea I forgot about the 8 speed in the newer trucks and I have no idea what gearing I have but these two variables making a 20% difference in fuel consumption... I mean that's no small number in my opinion. And it does blow my mind that the hemi tick isn't covered by that 100k mile engine and drivetrain warranty as long as you haven't done anything to your truck to void it. Do they still do that? Did your truck come with a 100k mile engine and drivetrain warranty?

@@Waskapmutni How common are Dodge/Chrysler/Ram/Jeep dealerships in Sweden, and how popular are their products?

@@johnthornton7763 I have seen an increase in rams the last couple of years. But I can't say how common the dealerships are and while I have seen ram increase the last years, I still wouldn't call them popular or even more common than Chrysler and Jeep. Oh and ram here still goes by dodge 🙈

My 6.4 is ticky as ever. I don't think it's hemi tick. But just overall sounds like shit. I hate it. Does yours sound ticky like exhaust leak?
