I used to think getting a 2500 gasser was dumb. Then I got my first work truck 2500 Chevy with the 6.6 gasser. Very impressed. With these new 8 and 10 speed transmissions paired with 410 and 4.30 rear ends these gasser tow great. The ONLY reason to buy a diesel is if you do hotshot for a living and you're towing every day. Towing the boat and camper on the weekends does not require a diesel. Not to mention all our fleet work trucks were diesels and we had all 3 big brands and they all had issues. Unless the epa drops the bullshit emissions requirements I won't buy a new diesel.

Bought the 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins. Starting looking at trading for a 2020 Ram 3500 for the Aisin and more payload. Started reading about the CP4 fuel pump issues and decided to keep my 2018 with a few after treatment modifications. Was the best way to go with 68RFE tuning since I don't tow more than 10K lbs. The engine runs cooler (oil and coolant temps) with the after treatment removal - we don't always mention this benefit.

Just traded in my 3.0 Duramax for a good old 5.3 gas engine. Bought my truck new with the 3.0 and put almost 54k on it and loved every minute of it. We towed our 5,000LBS travel trailer around 10,000 miles over the last 2-1/2 years. Towed great, fuel mileage was amazing, supper smooth engine. Why did I trade it in? Because over the 4th of July weekend my truck had a check engine light come on and limited me to 5 miles per hour after driving 200 miles. None of the dealerships could even look at it for over a week. What if I was on a long family vacation towing my trailer? We would have been stranded. I can reset codes and fix my 5.3 by myself. Super easy to work on and parts at every auto store. The Duramax requires the dealership to reset emissions codes.

My dad has that exact same 2500 Cummins. Rims and tires and all. When we don’t use it for what it’s for, running hot and hard, it’ll tell us to drive around until the system can clear some exhaust filter. And it’s so random you could be on your way to work and you can’t shut off the truck. So now you have to give her the beans for 30 minutes and now you’re late and then your fired and now you can’t afford the payments. Luckily it’s our businesses work truck now so she tows every day and I like hearing the turbo whistle my name so she gets ridden real hard

Right now I have a 2014 Ford diesel I bought new. Emissions intact. I use it just for towing north of 10,000 lbs. It’s been a good truck but I have spent a ton of money on maintenance over the years and recently spent about $20 grand on repairs for the cp4 failure and a sensor on the dpf caused it to derate and quit regen’ing. Fortunately they were able to save the dpf with a good cleaning. So I’m really starting to think that if I can get away with a good gas engine I’ll do it, even if I have to sacrifice some power and fuel economy. I may even save more money in the long run not paying for all the maintenance costs on the diesel and all the fuel additives and def fluid, etc.

I bought a 22 3500 dually with a 4.10 rear! Love it. Yes gas is trash 7-8 mph 90% in town driving, towing about 7-10k daily on flat roads. When I got my truck it was $5ish a gallon for diesel and $10k for diesel upgrade. I get a way better payload because of the weight reduction; that’s what works best for me. After my first real truck vs a 22 tundra I had till my Ram came in from Mexico, gas works extremely well for local work and 6k of driving no issues, besides a lack of power when towing. After talking with local people driving diesels, 75% of them don’t tow daily, i decided for me, gas would be the best for me and the business for not being stuck with modern ecu etc drama, I’ll be able to drive daily and not be stranded

I tow a 30’ travel trailer that’s lightweight. The rv weighs 6200 lbs empty and the truck weighs 7200 with me in it. Right off the bat the truck outweighs the camper by 1000 lbs. I chose the 6.4 gas motor because we only tow it about 5x a year. Other than that it’s a daily driver. I personally went with the hemi. Not only because I can’t justify the price of the diesel. But because I honestly don’t want the headache that comes with a lot of them anymore. I never tow more than 14,000 pounds. And on average I typically tow around 7 to 8000 pounds. So my 19 6.4 hemi geared for the 4.10 pulls everything that I need to just fine. I will say I have been tempted by Ford and Chevy‘s new gassers. But at the time that I bought it my truck was the best equipped you could get a work truck. And for the best price. The only regret I have is I wish I had gotten it in a 3500.

I own a 2017 Ram 5500 crew cab 4x4 that was custom ordered from factory with a 6.4 Hemi, 4:88 axles & manual transfer case. Had the frame stretched 3 feet & built into a custom flatbed tow truck. Empty its 15k lbs.... it literally Tows every single day... I've NEVER had a single problem with the truck Since new. (There has been a wiring issue with lights down the side of the flatbed, but that wasn't a Ram issue, it was the towing equipment manufacturer that did poor wiring. Even loaded with 2 vehicles on it... I've never regretted not getting the Cummins.... as you said, the engines are amazing, but the government emissions systems are problematic for EVERY brand and every class truck from light duty pickups all the way up to commercial OTR semis.... frankly it doesn't do any good if its under warranty.... the problem usually is the issues are so common... parts are always on national back order... so the truck is still out of commission. The gas chassis is perfectly capable, Quiet, gas is cheaper, no DEF to buy, no constant fuel filter changes, oil changes are cheaper, they start easily in long cold sub zero winters. Yes, the mileage is about 2-3mpg less thana diesel, but the gas is usually quite a it cheaper & easier to find in rural areas so it still works out cheaper since theres no Def & fuel filters & all the diesel drama... the high torque new diesel trucks literally have so much power. They can tear themselves apart if you work em hard... even in a worst case scenario, if the gas engine craps out sooner than the diesel would...you can literally get a new crate engine & swap it out in a weekend & still be less than the cost of buying the diesel in the beginning. The 4500 & 5500 chassis 6.4 is actually detuned for LESS hp/tq than the same engine in a pickup. That's for long term durability since they're designed to operate maxxed out daily vs the occasional pickup owner here n there.... I'm in the upper Midwest, so no mountains to climb, high elevation where ya need a turbo because the air is thin.... so the 6.4 Hemi has been an amazing chassis & been 100% reliable even though it literally is operating at max GVW every day. Many professional towing companies are actually switching to gas engines in the light duty towing like wreckers & 5500 flatbeds etc just for reliability.... warranty means nothing if the trucks always down waiting on parts.... Gas Wins...

My diesel tows at 30 mpg…..zero range loss. It’s a German diesel (3L TDI) but just as an example the efficiency of diesel is unmatched. Gas is great as a work truck, would entertain a 6.4, short tows, small loads.

2013 diesel Cummins. Dpf filter clogged 1300 miles from home on a personal emergency trip. It didn't restrict the speed but the warning for it did pop up. Mpg dropped to about 8 or less during this and it was stuck constantly "cleaning dpf filter". *Needed* my vehicle for this and it was in the shop for 3 out of the 4 days I had available. Dpf filter system had to be cut out, cleaned, and rewelded back in ($$$$) . I've completely lost faith in diesel trucks due to this and one of the signs I noticed prior to this failing was lower fuel mileage than normal and a Def tank that seemingly lasts forever. If your mpg has dropped off, get that dpf system inspected.

My diesel truck is slow to warm up and slow to cool down, a real pain at times. There is a hot weather routine of cooling down the diesel so no damage is done to the supercharger. A cold weather environment demands the diesel is plugged in for the block heater to slightly warm the engine. Some diesels are very hard to start in cold weather. My particular diesel truck is modified for the best fuel mileage I can get. My diesel truck sits unused a lot, especially in the winter months, October through March.

I also put another $10,000 into deleting and aftermarket turbos and other engine parts like cold air intake it's worth about 100 grand. As well as towing after my delete I'm getting 22mpg for my truck, before the delete i was getting 16 to 18mpg. It doesn't roll coal which is nice, it drives like a Corvette.

Great video Alex. I bought a 3500 with the HO Cummins & Aisin because I thought I might want to tow a fifth wheel RV at some point in the future. Usual driving is occasional 20-30 minute trips around town but once every couple weeks I take it out for an hour or more drive, get on the interstate & open it up. Also 3-4 times per year I drive it from FL to VA-MD to visit clients. Drive straight through both ways-12 hours at a shot. I’m hoping that burns out any crud that may have built up over the past couple months. I also have started towing a 15k fifth wheel with it. Very comfortable truck to drive long distances and it is a beast at towing. Love the exhaust brake. I use it every time I drive. Love your videos, keep up the great work.

With the Diesel you have DEF to buy, fuel filter change out every other oil change and hi low fuel pumps. The fuel filters are $300 each. The fuel pumps look at spending $4000 (around the 250,000 mile mark. DEF can be and extra $80 every 3-4 tanks of gas.

As a retired American trucker, now living in the Philippines 🇵🇭 🇺🇸, I can confidently confirm that diesels without all the emissions garbage are amazing and super reliable. For anybody who is interested, Google Ford Ranger Raptor in the Philippines. They are all diesel. Nearly every pickup and car are diesel. My personal car is a 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero diesel and is flawless, strong and reliable. Toyota introduced DEF systems here many years ago. There were so many failures, that the Philippines government required Toyota to remove (delete) all those systems. Theses cars and trucks here last forever. You guys back home are familiar with the Jeepneys? World War 2 military surplus vehicles that were turned into transit vehicles. ALL of those are 80 years old and still running 24/7. The point is what the video is saying is correct. Base diesels are super reliable and powerful without the EPA. I'm heading back to the states in a few months and will be buying a gas truck, and that hurts 🤬

I have a 6.4 hemi crew cab long bed 3500 dw. I needed payload over towing. Gas gives my an extra 800lbs to pack on the truck. Lance 1172 truck camper 4300lb. Dry. It is a bit slow in the mountains but I never go over 65 anyways. Diesel is to expensive compared to gas, even with the significant bad gas mileage in the gaser. Without the camper I regularly see 17 mpg and 12 with the camper on. But, no DEF, fuel filter changes, 175$ oil changes, extra cost of tire wear, high cost of fuel. Gas is still the way to go, unless you haul big trailers all the time.

Greetings Alex. excellent work and comparison for me both options are really excellent in RAM. In gasoline I love the e-torque system; I think that for the moment it is more reliable than the disconnection of cylinders,,; since the latter compromise the lubrication of the engine. From my own experience, the e-torque system helps save fuel in the 3.6 V6 and 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engines. But for heavy load work and long distance runs; As well as use of more than 8 hours a day for more than five work days a week, my choice will undoubtedly be the RAM powered (High Output) Cummins 6.7 diesel. I enjoy so much yours videos y comments. Big hug from CDMX, México 😮

@ftbrip I think the cylinder disconnect garbage contributes to the lifter tick noise, especially if you have a gear ratio that keeps your RPMs low at highway speeds. I always disable it and no lifter noise yet at 65k miles.

In my country those RAM trucks are considered luxury cars and used by families that need space to travel and almost never for work. I just made this decision about wich one and decided for the gas because here we have the diesel B15 (15%biodiesel) that make it lost some features when stopped for much time. So, if you usually fill the tank and stop the car in garage for 10 days or more you are risking you motor. The diesel manufacturer site here says that the b15 start degrading after 30 days from production… this need to be accounted too…

That has been a major issue with my 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins diesel (I tow a travel trailer long distances). Nothing but trouble with the DEF system. Got caught with the dreaded limp mode warning 2x. Turned out clogged DEF injector was the culprit. Also the ABS module and HCU have failed twice in the last couple years. Currently dealing with constant ABS warning lights and chimes so I think these POS parts are failing again not to mention other reliability problems such as failed 4WD actuator and AC system. Not sure these are diesel issues or Ram issues but just poor quality all around.
