I agree that artists would leave the categorisation to the art historians, and just get on with their own business. Howard Hodgkin said "We just do our work, the historians come along later and tell us what we did.". (paraphrasing here). I have always believed that if someone can say what they are doing then something is wrong! They have taken a wrong turning, and should really GO BACK.
