Oh how I would LOVE to be able to do this. Maybe I could have 15 years ago. I have severe Rheumatoid Disease now, and other issues that make daily task difficult, but I had to subscribe to the Smithsonian channel on my TV so I can watch Orangutan Jungle School. I love watching it so much. I think what you guys are doing is amazing!

Whoa ... Nyaru Menteng was founded by LONE DROSCHER NIELSEN, this is documented by the series Orangutan Island and well known. Lone deserves ALL the credit for the existence of Nyaru Menteng, PERIOD.
@TheGreatProjects5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeanette, you’re correct and we apologise for the mistake in the video. Nyaru Menteng was indeed founded by Lone and since her retirement is now managed by the BOS Foundation. A note has been added to the description to help clarify this. Thank you for your comment! Tom at The Great Projects

The humidity of the jungles appears to affect both human, and orang hair. There’s just no such thing as having a good hair day in the tropics. Just another thing we have in common. :)

Lona does deserve all the credit and I Watch the documentary a few days ago fun BBC that went to BOS and there was a very large padded male dad had no disabilities or health problems that had been in a cage for over 5 years since 2014 and I think that's a shame BOS is government-run

Thank you for your comment! This project will run from February to November in 2025 but the climate remains quite constant, therefore there is no real preferred time to volunteer regarding the animals. Whilst it can rain at any time of the year due to the rainforest climate, you can expect mostly dry weather with temperatures averaging 32°C (90°F) in the daytime and 23°C (73°F) at night. If you'd like any more information on the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Sanctuary, visit: www.thegreatprojects.com/projects/nyaru-menteng-orangutan-sanctuary or alternatively get in touch with our travel consultants at info@thegreatprojects.com or by calling +44(0) 208 885 4987 We hope to see you soon! - The Great Projects Team :)

The Guardian wrote an article about why this "volunteering" is bad for the animals, people, local communities and in the end the charities. It is not volunteering but you book it like a holiday. I know it is tempting and we would all live to spend time with orang utans, but you don't really. If you want to help, donate some money.
@TheGreatProjects3 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalie, thank you for your comment and the Guardian’s article is a really interesting read for anyone considering taking part in a project abroad, especially those based at orphanages, schools and hospitals. Donations are absolutely a fantastic way to help and provide financial support (particularly in this difficult time), and for anyone looking to travel and take part in a project abroad, we always advise looking carefully at each project and asking how it is helping and ensuring they would not be taking work away from local people by joining. This project at Nyaru Menteng is run alongside the work of the BOS Foundation and works to provide extra support to the existing team at the centre. We frequently liaise with the BOS Foundation staff to understand what support they may require and what can be done to assist them, particularly anything that they may not have the manpower for. This ensures that everything even short-term volunteers do, contribute to the long term aims and efforts of the centre. Safety and maintaining the BOS Foundation’s successful rehabilitation and release programme is of the highest priority and so volunteers do not engage with this, but rather look to support the ongoing efforts of the BOS Foundation and provide additional assistance where required. There is also no hands-on contact with any animals, but the volunteers will help to build enrichment items and prepare food for the orangutans, as well as experiencing behind-the-scenes of a successful rehabilitation centre. Multiple health and safety checks are done prior to arrival and strict rules are in place to ensure the animals are protected at all times. If you would like any further information or would like to speak to a member of the team, please feel free to send us a message or give us a call. Thank you.

Explain this atheists. There isn’t a single animal that goes to such efforts for another creature. Not only are we not animals but we were put on this earth to take care of Mother Earth and the flora and fauna that inhabit her…
