The Great War

Күн бұрын

Dan Daly was one of only two Marines to be awarded two Medals of Honor in two seperate conflicts. The first one, in his actions 1901 during the China Relief. His second one for his actions during the U.S. Invasion and Occupation of Haiti 1915. But he wasn’t done yet and after the U.S. entry into WW1 April 1917, he was close receiving his third one on the battlefields of Belleau Wood in France.

I've posted this before, but this is what we were told in Boot Camp about Sergeant Major Dan Daily. He won his first Medal of Honor as a Private in 1900 while in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. The story goes he was defending a section of the wall single handed. All through the night his fellow Marines could hear Dan firing at the oncoming Boxers. In the wee hours of the morning Dan's weapon fell silent, and the Marines thought, "Well, they got Dan". After sunup a detail was sent out to recover his body, but they were surprised to find Dan with his weapon and very much alive. When asked why he had stopped firing a few hours before, he said, "they quit coming".

To clarify for Glad, you don't call Marines "soldiers," for the same reason you wouldn't call someone in the Air Force a sailor. It might sound like nitpicking if you're not familiar with US military culture, but you earn the right to be called a soldier by serving in the Army and you earn the right to be called a Marine by serving in the USMC.

I thought the video was great and your narration was thoughtful and on point, I also appreciate the simple and straightforward way that you presented it. As a former Marine myself I have only one complaint and it's definitely one that would have been shared by sergeant major Dan Daly, actually two simple complaints but both very important to a Marine. At one point you refer to the sergeant-major as a sergeant while he was holding a much higher rank, this is a army practice to refer to their sergeants Sergeant first class etc as simply Sergeant, but in the Marine corps that is a demotion and will get your teeth kicked in real quick if you did it. The second and most common issue that Marines face is that you are to never refer to a Marine as a soldier! Men in the army are soldiers while men in the Marine corps will always be Marines!

Have you done anything about "PAS FINI" (not finished)> In 1918, Russia capitulated to Germany and withdrew from WWI. This enabled Germany to withdraw 44 DIVISIONS from the Eastern Front and hurl them at the Allies in France. The French and British lines were overwhelmed and Germany began making significant advances. By late May 1918, the Germans had advanced within 45 miles of Paris. The only troops available were the U.S. Marine 3rd Brigade (about 1/2 a division). The Marines were loaded in trucks, taxis, cars, anything that would roll and taken to the front. A place called Belleau Woods. After getting as close to the front as they could, they disembarked their vehicles and began marching to the front. They met with French soldiers retreating. On of the marines asked the French where the front was. One Frenchman muttered "Beyond us there are only Germans, La Guerre est fini. (The war is finished)." One Marine snarled back, "Pas Fini (not finished)." "Pas Fini" passed from Marine to Marine, from unit to unit. It started as almost a joke, then as a commitment, then as the battle cry as the Marines slammed into the German advance. Four times the Marines crossed the field. Desperate to end the war, the Germans threw division after battle seasoned division at them. Four times the Marines were thrown back. By the fifth time, half their number, over 9,000, of the Marines were casualties, but they had utterly destroyed three German divisions and taken Belleau Wood....and turned the tide of the war, and the Marines would be known thereafter by the Germans, and everyone else, as the "Tueffel Hunden!"[Devil Dogs].

Not really. When talking about a still existing noun or for that matter an organization's continuous existence is denoted when describing it as being the oldest. You have to do mental gymnastics to imply otherwise for an organization which was disbanded for a period of time and to claim it's the oldest over something that has been around for continuously longer. He's right. You're wrong. Deal with it.

Hi, Indy! Dan Daly was only one of two Marines to be awarded two Medals of Honor by the Department of the Navy. There are other Marines who received two of the Army and Navy Medals of Honor. Splitting hairs, but Marine Corps "propaganda" really took off in the First World War.

Did not know that. Interesting that every MOH winner I have heard says that they feel they don't deserve it. For example - John Basilone usually said 'I wear it for all the Marines who were there too' (paraphrase)
@Autobotmatt428
@Autobotmatt428 6 жыл бұрын
Always the case and the reasoning is mainly the same. But Butlers reasons were this "After the occupation of Veracruz, many military personnel received the Medal of Honor, an unusually high number that somewhat diminished the prestige of the award. The army presented one, nine went to Marines and 46 were bestowed upon naval personnel. During World War I Butler, then a major, attempted to return his medal, explaining he had done nothing to deserve it. The medal was returned back to him with orders to keep it and to wear it as well." - Editors of the Boston Publishing Company (1985). Above and Beyond, A History of the Medal of Honor from the Civil War to Vietnam. p. 113.

My Great-Grandfather Robert Daly was able to meet him in Brooklyn after he came to the US from Ireland. He was a cousin to my Great-Grandfather and they highly regarded each other from what I am told. The video is superb, well spoken and down-right well made. I assume on behalf of my family, I would like to thank you for your time spent putting this together.

Daniel Thanks, I looked it up and liked it. Al Jolson's song is about the US Marines, but the phrase "tell that to the marines" is at least 100 years older and about Britain's Royal Marines. "That will do the marines, but the sailors won't believe it." A variation: "Tell that to the horse marines," a non-existent ship-borne cavalry arm.
@davidsachs4883

I read somewhere that the phrase tell it to a marine camefrom an 19th century dinner party where someone was getting ridiculed for discribing flying fish when the commander of the marine corps said he had seen flying fish when younger on a pacific cruise

David Sachs, Internet says that version was invented by W.P. Drury, written in the 1900s. The oldest written record is 1804 but it seems like it was already a known phrase by then.
