Lifelong Jazzmaster/Jag player here. I think the “mid” tone control is to help you sculpt the drive sounds. It sounds like it’s got 1 meg pots so you need to turn down the treble on your amp & drive pedals or back off on the tone knob. My whole rig is set up around ultra bright pickups like these & my drive sounds are fat & raunchy. Just gotta tame that high end.

You should dedicate a monthly column just to follow up on the weird and wonderful world that is "Vintage and Friends". Every year at Guitar Summit, they have a whole new range of guitars, brands, and sub-brands out. Mostly versions of classics, but what versions! This year, I discovered that "Fret King" is also a brand from that world; so are Wilkinson and Entwistle Pickups. That Brian May-style guitar you reviewed the other day, for example, is awesome - and totally unique, nothing from other manufacturers comes near. One wild blend of Jazzmaster, Jaguar, and no-idea-what that I saw had no less than THREE levels of sound switching: a three way toggle, three push sliders, and a five-position chicken head. Or that Fret King with a P90 at the neck, SC in the middle, and HB at the bridge! All at rock-bottom prices! I was shown the printed catalogue of all this, it weighs a pound! Everything about this is quirkily English, but also GOOD!

When you say humbucking you are actually referring to the pickups wired in series. Pickups wired in parallel can humbuck too, that's why the middle one on a strat is reverse wound and reverse polarity. In this particular configuration I'd say that neck and middle are the same meaning that you cancel the hum when using bridge and neck or bridge and middle, any other combination would be susceptible to interference (50 cycle hum, radio, lights, etc)

Tried one of these, 2 actually, and they sounded quite different. One was much louder and brighter than the other. They were both set up by the shop guy, so I assume they were set up for the optimum sound for each? I found something similar on a couple of PRS DGT SEs, the gold top and the burst, but don't know about the setup. The gold top was louder & brighter. I tried another burst recently which sounded more like the gold top. I'd recommend trying more than one of these guitars. Neither of the Treos seemed to sustain well on the higher frets 15th etc. and higher strings. On the lower frets it was ok. I wasn't taken by the odd switchery, knob choice, or positioning. I would prefer a 5 way plus toggle or pull switch for the neck+bridge. 1 vol, 1 pu-blend, and 1 tone would be my 3 knob choice with the vol in a violining position, so 'strat-ish'. The trem was good. Survived country bend, without the top E going flat. The arm was too close to the frets for my preference. The arm was also rattling in the hole. This was on both guitars. A curate's egg, good in parts. Looks over practicality for me. May suit players not already used to Gibson 4 knob, tele and strat switch/knobbery.

Funny enough I just bought a used fender noventa jazzmaster this earlier this month(very similar to this guitar except it has an offset body) and I've been wanting to do something similar with the pickup selector but I think I'll do something like the player plus series does on the Nashville tele where it brings in the neck pickup on any position with a push pull pot. Also the combination of a jazzmaster trem with p90s is a match made in heaven to my ears. I'm really surprised this guitar doesn't drive. My noventa takes drive like a champ. Great demo!

I'm curious about what value pots it has. If it has Jazzmaster correct 1 meg pots, the added highs may contribute to issues with the drive sounds. Maybe the mid control has to get to a sweet spot for the drive sounds. I do really appreciate the switching system. I have a couple S style guitars wired to get similar options. But it uses V V T knobs. The neck and bridge (rw/rp) go to a three way blade switch and then the first V knob. The middle pickup goes to the second volume. The tone is master. The biggest difference is the neck and bridge are series not parallel combined. Note: use a Jazz Bass wiring schematic so you don't get muted when turning one volume down

Dig deeper into the double-tone system and get back to us on the distortion sounds. Are you sure that one of those isn't a bass-cut like a G&L or Reverend? And it's unfortunate that the pots don't have values stamped on them -- I'd suspect they're 1Meg for the brightness, like a Jazzmaster.

Vintage are ultimately owned by John Hornby Skewes in Leeds (JHS, but not the pedals JHS), with Trev Wilkinson doing the design and sourcing production. Revelation are designed by Alan Entwistle and seem to be owned by Sutherland Trading in South Wales, who bought the rights from Hohner decades ago, but Revelation was dormant for a long while. While there's definitely some intersection in designers (Entwistle did the recent Vintage Revo models?), they seem to be different companies/owners. Though it's also possible they both use the same far east factories for production - who knows!

its another Alan Entwistle-ism (the pickup and electronics designer for this and various other JHS guitar (John H. Skewes, not to be confused with Josh Scott from JHS pedals) he likes to throw two 3 way switches on 3 pickup guitars and two tone caps of different values, one usually affects mid freq and the other low frequencies, he sometimes adds a treble cut to similar circuits, I can see people spending more time fiddling with the knobs and switches than playing the thing, the reason for the second three way switch can be asthetics or it can be due to three ways being easier to solder than mini toggles saving them money on the overall production while making it looks cooler at the same time, these jhs brands are pretty good at making their cost saving methods look cool. Maybe it just sound better to Mr. Entwistles ears, who knows, it does look cool having the two 3 way switches tho.
