I have been for a plant-based diet for about 1.5 years now and while I believe B12 deficiency is a valid point, I get annoyed with ppl lecturing me about this. Do they watch their daily intake if vitamin A, C, K, folic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, etc.?? Most of them don't and might be in many cases deficient in some of these categories. My personal experience has shown me that I am much more concerned and about my diet and health and actively shaping it for the better than most ppl I know. Do keep on inspiring, guys!
@marta75307 жыл бұрын
You can be eating your vitamins and folic acid, if you dont get your B12 you will not absorb them properly and you will have a deficiency on every single one of them. I checked every day my intake and still had lack of it.

I've been vegetarian for about 22 years and it was only last year when I decided to cut out the small amount of dairy products out my diet that I was diagnosed B12 deficent. I had started to get really into fitness and I was training pretty much every day and I noticed I was getting really awful pain in my joint so I went to be tested for arthritis as it runs in my family and the only thing that showed up on the tests was the b12 deficiency. They actually took the blood test again as they thought it was an error as they'd never seen anyone with absolutely no trace of b12 in their blood but no the second test came back the same. The doctor was shocked that I did not notice something was wrong but as I've been vegetarian since I was 12 they way I felt was normal. Now I take 3 prescribed b12 supplements a day and I go for a monthly injection. I do feel loads better for it and my hair and nails are now growing in nice and strong :-). The pain in my joints also disappeared.

I had a b12 deficiency and tbh it's pretty heavy. I was 20 around that time and I had to take an hour nap after every school, while I sleep 8 hours every night. I felt cold 24/7. My hair felt out more easily. It was though to concentrate and I would fall asleep during lectures quite regurlary. B12 doesn't come from being vegan or vegetarian for a few years, like said by another commenter you normally would have to not get it from your diet for 10 years or something before you get a deficiency. It's probrably something wrong in my system, my brother has the same. But at the same time, I would like to ask you to take your health serious. B12 deficiency is a serious problem to have and will throw your life of track for a half year, or longer when you can't figure out what it is. It's good to supplement what you can't get from your diet. Best is to try to get it into your diet, but most vegan products just have b12 added which really makes me raise the question what the difference between supplementing and eating it then. I supplement it. Just research b12 deficiency is you're still deciding if you should do the same and don't just listen to people that tell you they feel great so you probrably don't have to supplement. That's not a good base for your decision.

@jigglypufflove5 жыл бұрын
Look up pernicious anaemia. It’s an autoimmune disease where the stomach cells which produce a substance known as Intrinsic factor are damaged by body’s own immune system. Intrinsic factor binds to B12 in the stomach and this combined form is absorbed further down the gut at the terminal ileum. If you have pernicious anaemia it doesn’t matter how much B12 you ingest orally because you lack the ability to produce intrinsic factor in the stomach the B12 will pass out through your gut without being absorbed. B12 with iron and folate is essential in red blood cell production hence eventual anaemia with symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, etc. People with pernicious anaemia will require lifelong intramuscular B12 injections usually every 3 months. Autoimmune diseases have a genetic component.

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian, don't know if that changes my B-12 intake, but it has never been a problem for me. However I want to address another vital nutrient that has been a problem for me. I've been vegetarian for about 18 years now, and in my experience getting a good source of non-Heme Iron is something frequently overlooked. I recently found out that I have been highly Iron deficient for quite some time, I had even supplemented with Iron tablets in the past, it turns out these are mostly useless as more than 70% (when taken in solid form) is not absorbed by the body. Basically the body most readily absorbs Heme-Iron, that is Iron bound to a protein, which comes from animal sources. This puts anyone not eating meat at a considerable disadvantage, as you will need several times the amount of non-Heme Iron in your diet, in order to absorb the "equivalent" and "sufficient" daily amount of Heme-Iron.
@plantonic17918 жыл бұрын
yes, iron from animal protein is easier absorbed. BUT milk can block the absorption of iron from plants. do some research on that. usually, vegans are less deficient of iron than vegetarians! good luck! :)

Any veg or mushroom that grows in soil and fertilized organically will have small amounts of B12. GLYPHOSATE in GMO foods is a massively bigger deal especially for vegans would make a good video.
@matthewh.60414 жыл бұрын
@Robin Murray i'm so glad someone finally mentioned glyphosates and gmo foods in the comments i've perused over various "vegan" oriented videos. it's really insidious the effects they have in the short and long term on the body's ability to process nutrients and maintain itself. i rather feel we have only begun to see the real effects

Why not just bite the bullet and have a few eggs here and there, or some other nonvegan b-12 source. Think of it as a beneficial cheat. I'm thinking of going to a vegetarian diet. Don't know if vegan is such a good idea yet. I definitely need to reduce my carbs and refined sugars.
@nicolapicola45025 жыл бұрын
So you're saying that veganism would not, historically, have been a sustainable lifestyle, because you need B12 but can't get it without supplementations or fortified (manufactured) foods, which requires some form of technology that hasn't really been around until this century. Which sort of puts me off. I think I'll stick with vegetarian rather than vegan. Thank you for the video though :-)

I've recently found out about the different kinds of iron and that there is specific kind only found in red meat. I'm not going to claim to know loads because i can't remember exactly but I've been a vegetarian for about 5 years now and I've been tested quite a few times and I've never come up as deficient in anything. but i haven't been feeling 100% and apparently because there is iron content in our blood and in our liver?? and so when we get a blood test it only shows whats in out blood which is the iron we can get from a plant based diet and so apparently i (and all vegetarians/vegans/pescetarians) are highly iron deficient in the liver?? I am so torn because i cannot bring myself to eat meat and i know about how horrible the industry is etc etc but as the same time i want to be healthy?? does anyone know any more about this and if there are any other options?? I am currently taking an iron supplement and have been feeling a bit better but i know its not enough and I'm so frustrated

Sarah, there is a reasonably common VDFR gene mutation that results in the host having reduced active vit D hormone, these peopl need a heck of a lot more (about 4x). If you eat a lot of green leafy veg this is likely the case in my opinion. Speaking from BSc in nutrition, info from a Nutrigenetics module. Best of luck
@louisemellett25128 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah, I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years now and over the years have had many bouts of low Iron and B12, I've taken supplements and had B12 injections. I've been very stable for the last few years. I think one of the main reasons has been porridge or over night oats made with almond milk and a sprinkling of mixed seeds every morning, snacking on nuts and seeds and throwing beans, lentils and spinach into every meal. Also a lot fruit, as the vitamin C will help the iron to absorb into your blood stream. Sorry if this is a bit basic but works for me.
@mju348 жыл бұрын
If you decide to use molasses, make sure it's "blackstrap" molasses, the iron content is vastly different. Also you might try Shilajit, which is quite effective in treating iron deficiency.

As I understand it, B12 is an gut microorganism that our bodies recycle constantly, so if we have a good diet and eat fairly clean then our bodies will recycle what they need. However if our gut is struggling and not operating well, then reabsorbtion becomes an issue and this can happen whether vegan or not: plenty of omnivores have this issue. They may eat enough b12 but it is not being absorbed. Doing a cleanse may help, as will anything that helps digestion. I would love to see you vegan athletes who have not supplemented get tested, and I recon you could be clean, and good. Keep up the good work.

You don't address the issue of the lack of b12 in a vegan diet. By saying that Vegans should stake a b12 supplement aren't you saying a vegan diet by itself is inadequate?
@1234Cheesus8 жыл бұрын
Grahame Thompson 40% of the US population is B12 deficient, 1% of the US is vegan - this quite clearly shows that it's not a problem confined to just vegans. Yes it is extremely hard to get B12 from natural sources on a vegan diet, I don't doubt that. But the facts I mentioned show that it's simply a problem because every B12 source nowadays is lacking, whereas hundreds of years ago our soil was richer, our water wasn't cleaned etc. Everyone should be taking a B12 supplement, not just vegans.
