It's why "belief" is so dangerous, making sense of one thing doesn't mean we have to approve of everything. Everyone of us has and always have great ideas or thoughts and feelings that makes sense but not every word is gold - so we shouldn't accept their truth since we are not them, the same as you are not me, and that your husband, wife or partner are not you but we all sometimes agree on some things but not everything. This is because we think because we are, we have our own individual consciousness, figuring things out, living life the best way we can from the knowledge we gain and the learning process from our own individual experiences. However we seem to lose the ability to discern other's thoughts and feelings where we may agree with them on some things but not everything. How should we define harmony with each other if we cannot find common ground with our neighbors, friends or family? How can we make our country great, if we use "belief" in our thinking processes instead of "figuring things out" instead by thinking the way we want instead of others spoon feeding us information which at times does seem wrong, since usually those who coerce a particular view usually is made because it has an agenda to push behind it. It's probably why we have an oligarchy now instead of a true democracy since we are so used to being spoon-fed information that it's hard for us individually to escape "belief" and to instead "discern" truth from lies, honesty from deception. So in order to understand harmony where we can all live together, rich with the poor, the white along with the black and brown and yellow and red, the old and the young, we must be able to develop understanding and have the capability and ability to discern, to know and not believe, where we can all live together. It's like listening to classical music, the sound one hears in these performance can only be harmonic if each of the musical instruments can work together. Those in power must understand that we need each other in order to keep our nation whole and in good form, but it does not come about if the American folk lies asleep and keeps "believing" lies which may in the end, may spell the doom for us all since the law of cause and effect is immutable where in some time in the future that swing of the pendulum will also hit us with terrible force. We see this already in climate change and in the terrible havoc we are facing with the corona virus pandemic. So we must wake up from belief, this way we are not lured into false promises where a lot of folks as well as the individual gets taken advantage of. And when we actually can think individually without coercion or belief, we can live a brighter tomorrow since by this time we can respect each other no matter our station in life, our color, world views, age, wealth or creed.

I appreciate Thom’s comments and insight, but I think some crucial history is missing here. The reason we had a more equitable society with high tax rates for the rich and robust social programs for a time was not just because FDR was a good guy or something. It’s because there was a huge worker movement in the US at that time and a historic amount of socialist and communist membership at the time. FDR knew that if he didn’t appease them it would be bad for him politically because those groups were very influential and UNIFIED around worker rights and ending the wealth gap. We know Nancy Pelosi doesn’t want money out of politics! She just got caught in that Tesla stock mess. Y’all reported on that. Thom made it sound as though this is more of a republican thing and I don’t understand why. Pelosi isn’t not going to put that bill on the floor unless she knows it won’t go anywhere. Neither would McConnel If you want these policies to be legislated, outside pressure is mandatory not optional. We can’t keep electing people on good faith and moral fortitude. We have to build outside pressure through worker solidarity so we can have a say in things. The electoral system is too corrupted for us to take it on good faith that eventually someone who cares about us will do the right thing and reject every incentive along the way to do the opposite.

Just as oligarchy collapses into totalitarianism, democracy collapses into the tyranny of the majority, or mob rule. An oligarch is a single individual that controls an entire sector of the economy. John D. Rockefeller was very close to being an oligarch by controlling 90% of the oil; 100% is an oligarch. In Russia during the time of the Soviet Union and presently there are oligarchs that control entire sectors of the economy. In the US we have an oligopoly (monopoly of the few) with several corporations controlling entire sectors of the economy. Corporatism started in the 1990s with the government allowing corporations to acquisition (buy) entire sectors of the economy. The government controls the regulations that allow it and disallows competition against it, and the oligops pay the government back by basically paying for everything. Reverse the economic policies of the 1990s and reverse the economic situation we're in. And then the new headache will be the number of choices we have in both higher paying jobs and consumer goods.

Please keep pushing this topic! So much could be solved if we can get corporate money out of politics, all civilian donations to elected officials made public, tougher laws around corruption, and we can figure solid policy (min wage, taxes, education, healthcare, etc) to fix the wealth gap problem in this country. Russia is the perfect example of what can happen if we keep going down this road.

Unspoken, but vital, is that voting for republicans and/or democrats MUST END. We *desperately* need more competition in our political sphere and we're not going to get it unless we stop voting for the two political parties that are the instruments of the ruling elites.
@lawsonj394 жыл бұрын
Not so sure you're right. We already have a variety of parties, and the New Deal essentially left the party duopoly in place but distributed power a lot more widely--though not widely enough, as it turns out.
@mikeaustin41384 жыл бұрын
@@lawsonj39 Does anyone *seriously* believe either major political party is going to reform itself? Americans are polled near to death. Our elected representatives know where we stand. Has it been reflected in their behavior? Absolutely not. My point is to start voting third-party for two reasons. It's a more effective protest vote than holding your nose and voting for the lesser of two evils. And, it may help to dispel the "wasted vote" mindset and wind up actually getting some third-party candidates elected to office.

The history of US oligarchy sounded valid, but then Hartmann said Nancy Pelosi was going to help save us from oligarchy with HR1. Pelosi IS oligarchy (based on her wealth) and she defends oligarchy (based on her actions), so that argument seems ridiculous at best. Didn’t Hartmann support oligarchy (Clinton) in 2016? I think he lost credibility on this issue for that reason alone.

You are correct, to a large degree, a police state has developed. This has driven calls to defund the police state, but because of the way many engage in politics as though it were a competition between sports teams, the fan(atic)s pay little or no attention to the problems the oligarchs implement behind their favorite team and just focus on hating the other team and support the developing police state.

Government is the answer? All governments now throughout history demonstrate one predominant goal, which is to establish and sustain power for the people who have it. We need a healthy decentralization, not more complex "regulations" (i.e. gatekeeper laws) that inevitably are filtered through wealthy desires.

Oligarchy in early 21st century America is reinforced by minting a new class of “mini-oligarchs”. Convincing this wealthy, yet not absurdly wealthy, class of regressive policies allows a stronger grip on American society. Convince them they have been fooled as well, and suddenly such sweeping reforms won’t seem hard whatsoever.
