Maj. Gen. John Pope was placed in command of the newly-constituted Army of Virginia on June 26th. Pope's orders were to defend Washington DC and Union-held northern Virginia while the Army of the Potomac under Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan battled Robert E. Lee outside of Richmond. When McClellan was defeated at the end of the Seven Days battles less than a week later, Lee turned his attention north toward Pope while McClellan regrouped his army. Pope's three army corps were arrayed in a line from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Rappahannock River. Lee responded to Pope’s dispositions by dispatching Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson with 14,000 men to Gordonsville towards the center of Pope's line. Jackson was later reinforced by Maj. Gen. A.P. Hill’s division. On August 6th, Pope marched his forces south into Culpeper County with the objective of capturing the rail junction at Gordonsville. On August 9th, Jackson and Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks’s Second Corps of Pope's army tangled at Cedar Mountain with the Federals gaining an early advantage. A Confederate counterattack led by Hill on the Union right repulsed the Federals and won the day. Confederate Brig. Gen. Charles Winder was killed. The battle at Cedar Mountain shifted fighting in Virginia from the Peninsula to Northern Virginia, giving Lee the strategic initiative.

I believe we all agree we would love to destroy an enemy army, but I agree with your decision to not ruin your army while doing that, and throwing away your veterancy in that investment. I think your use of your target choice, attacking position or attacking formation, has stood you in good stead. Keep it up, pleased with your proceed.

H.G. I think this battle plan was flawless. I tried a similar plan ,but placed my artillery in the center to far forward. The Union moved forward and kicked the crap out the units I had in the center. The way you deployed they could not advance without exposing their flanks.Nice stuff. I have played this battle a few times never pushed their entire army into the open. I guess you could have kicked their ass for awhile longer.May have improved your score on goods.I think you did the right thing winning the battle saving your army for Bull Run 2. Great Plan.

I don't think you pressed the attack enough, yes you would have lost roughly 2000 to 2500 men more, however i think you would have seen his casualties skyrocket to well over 10000, he was out in the open and in disarray. you had him surrounded, and when surrounded it would not take long before his units became stunned or surrendered or broken completely. I liked your strategy in the beginning, very solid work, but i think had you pressed him out of the woods you could have moved all your units up to the wood line and destroyed him, and while he started to chain route you could position you troops to shoot them like fish in a barrel.

Have finished yesterday the Battle of Cold Harbour at the brigadier mode after the new update as Confederate and i'm really not sure anymore about my own words i have written about casaulties do matter or not. The only battle i had a remarquable less number to fight against Federals was Fredericksburg. Played Cold Harbour two times. First turn i made it by advancing and take Cold Harbour at beginning. Lost only 2000 men against 4000 Federals. After that i would have now to deal before those two "small" battles against 150'000 Union soldiers as the Intelligence Service tells me. Then i made the whole three day tour, had more then 10'000 lost and killed nearly 40'000 Federals. Both battles same Union strenght, around 95'000 men. So after that, my 2nd Battle of Cold Harbour the Union army was growing exactly about that numbers more i killed. The Intelligence Service told me about an enemy strenght of 185-190'000 men for the Washington campaign. Training and armory were also different, dont have the numbers written down but i remembered that. There's another important different after that update in the brigadier mode in my opinion. I never get better weapons. Still capturing Harpers Ferry M1855 at most from the Federals. Only 2800 Springfield 1861 captured till yet, not even a single Springfield 1863. Well, if you wanna play the WIlderness (Saunders Farm) with those weapons, then prepare yourself to sacrifice a good part of your army. Didn't play that battle. At Lauren Hill i lost more then 13'000 men, normally around 9'000 cause i got modern weapons captured from the Federals. At that time normally you got allready 5 or 6 brigades equiped with those Springfields. Now, for Washington i was able to equip my first unit with Springfield 1861...

Great strategy and it worked. Since the new system takes into account the losses I believe I would have wiped out his army in your place. They were all gathered in chaos over to your left near the end. Wouldn't that have had a profound effect on his ability to field troops in the coming battles?

Quite possibly. That's the one thing I was torn about. I wasn't sure whether coming out into the open to continue the attack was going to be worth it or not.

Under the old system before .92 your strategy was perfect because you want to preserve as many troops as possible but I know from experience that if you can wipe out an enemy's ability to wage war campaigns quickly it's better to wipe them out. I think that is the direction this game is heading...not totally sure.
