Kmart in the 70s & 80s - Why We LOVED IT

A return to the Kmart of the 1970s that we all loved.
Before the days of "Super Kmarts" and "Big Ks," there was just Kmart.
The first Kmart was opened in 1962, and by the mid-1970s, we were all shopping there.
Revisit the days of Blue Light Specials, Kmart Cafeterias, and random wood-veneered merchandise scattered in aisles throughout the store.

Grew up in the 70's and 80's. I never realized at the time how good we had it. You took it for granted that it'll always be like it was.

Back in 1971, the day before I graduated from high school, I asked the manager in Sporting Goods for a job application. He handed it to me and I started to walk away. He said I should fill it out right there so he can take a look at it. Before I knew it, he hired me. My first day on the job was the day after graduation. I was making $1.85 / hour. My two least favorite tasks was announcing the Blue Light Specials on the intercom and drilling holes in bowling balls. I was only 17 at the time. My boss thought I was 18. Back then, you could buy a handgun right there in sporting goods. So, here I was selling handguns to buyers that had to be at least 18 when I was only 17. I worked that entire summer before leaving for college. Great memories!

Yes, Kmart has nicer sales staff unlike walmart, where they seem to have gotten way rude since they created their bloated ego balloon trip. As consumers I feel guilty for not supporting Kmart ever enough, and when I did it was too late! I lost 2 Kmart area stores by my house in 2015 ( technically lost 4 in total when I lived in Elwood, IL.)

K Mart is where I met my wife of 45 years ! She worked in the delicatessen and gave me a large helping of macaroni and cheese I knew she liked me after that and the rest is history my three kids and my wife and myself have worked for k marts at one time or another so they are a big part of our life! Thank you K marts you were there when we needed you!

Absolutely adored Kmart. Every year, when school ended, we would right away go to Kmart to put everything on layaway for next year so my mom could have all summer to pay it off (there were 5 of us in school at one point so it was super costly). I used to get SO EXCITED when the last payment was made before school started again and we got to pick up our huge box and relive the experience of everything we picked a few months back. As we got older Kmart expanded and had the little cafe in the front and then the garden center. We loved going

I loved Kmart as a kid in the 70s. Ours had the cafeteria, but right next to it there was ten cent Skee Ball! I was a hyperactive child so it was either money for Skee Ball or I would hide inside those round clothes racks and make my mom try and find me. Then there was setting all of the kitchen timers to go off in one minute increments and putting random items in peoples carts. I really should have been beat more as a child.

I LOVED K-Mart… I worked there when I was 16 in 1984 in the deli. I had full control over the blue light special for the deli. I could create any special I wanted and write the script I would announce over the loud speaker. It was such a blast. BUT… I wanted to get my ear pierced and had to get it approved with my manager because of the strict dress code. With manager approval in hand I got my ear pierced and promptly got fired by the store because of it, even after taking it out right in front of them to keep my job. The deli manager apparently didn’t have the power to approve such a controversial thing and was also fired. My mom told me I would get fired if I did it, but I had deli manager approval, I showed her!! I couldn’t bare to walk I the door when I was supposed to be at work and tell her I was fired. She was absolutely livid with me! Those were the good old days! 😂😂

80's into the 90's too.....k mart and the culture and society at thaat time went thru the 80's into the 90's toooooo and really k mart florished into the 2000's. the k mart where i live made it and managed to stay open till bout 2011 or 2012.... but by the the 70's 80's and into te 90's vibe was pretty much gone.

One of the things I miss about k mart is that if you tried to steal something they would run you down and tackle you. My friend was security and he threw an exorcize weight threw the front window to chase down a shoplifter. The guy was so surprised he stopped long enough for my friend to take him down. Cops showed up, took him away and my friend got an accommodation. That's how store security is done.

The security guy would count how many people scratched their butts or privates each day! He had enclosed cat walks with bubbles on the floor all around the store. Him, my manager and the Shoe Manager always joked with each other and made the day go buy faster.

It was fun because they hired a bunch of us college students and we basically ran the floor. ‘The blue light is now flashing in our appliance department; where we are featuring the Proctor/Silex 4 slice toaster, normally selling for $14.99, now while the blue light is flashing you can buy this toaster for the incredibly low price of $9.99; so come on over to our appliance department and take advantage of this great savings. All I remember about Kmart was begging mom not to buy my school outfits there, in fear kids would make fun of my new clothes, calling them “ Kmart Specials.” That was derogatory for cheap clothes. Does anyone else remember getting teased at school based on Kmart clothes? I’m talking about Elementary to the Middle school days. Middle school kids were harsh! Anyway, by the mid 70’s The cool stuff was at The Gap where your mom bought you Levi jeans and Cords in different colors to choose from. You never wore jeans or pants that you were out-growing or kids would yell at you “ high waters!” Oh and putting a comb in your back pocket, the kind with the rectangular handle that had phrases on it like “Hot Stuff” or “Get Down” was cool, unless you weren’t considered hot or cool…😎 (By the end of the 70’s, designer jeans were the next big fad. ) In footwear it was Earth Shoes, Converse high tops aka Fishheads or knee high boots that looked good with long skirts or Gouchos-( Does anybody remember them?) (By 1980 everyone wore Nikes. The popular style was the white leather Nikes with the red logo on the sides, the canvas ones if you couldn’t afford leather.) Back to the 70’s-For accessories you had kissing potion and kissing slicks ( I think) in bubble gum , strawberry or cherry. 🍬🍓🍒 flavors. And we can’t forget Loves Babysoft or Jean Nate’. And does anyone remember those things you put on the end of your pencils? I do remember pencil fighting 😌Can anyone else help me remember stuff I left out? I know I went from Kmart to the general styles of the 70’s, sorry bout that but I hope it brought back some memories for you! 😄

Nevermind, I was right there with you on the school outfits. We were not rich and my mom made due by buying at Kmart. We caught hell at school for not wearing name brand clothes. But on the bright side, it made a tough kid out of me as I was in many fights at school defending my meager upbringing. And yes I wore high waters and white socks to school. And I continued the same upbringing to my kids and taught them the value of money and wastefull spending.

I worked at KMart as a senior in high school in 1984 and thru 1985. Worked in the electronics section. So much fun! Miss those days so much! Made a little commission back then and still a sales guy today for robots and machine vision. Kmart was the start of a great career in sales for me and I miss it greatly!

I always felt like we won the lottery when they did a blue light special when we were in the store. Us kids would say we needed to use the bath and race to see who could get to the blue light first. We had rules: no running, can’t bug adults, must be stealthy as possible. Thank you for reminding me of being a kid. Kmart offered the best lay away program allowing many families to buy back to school clothes for their kids especially since many larger families with several kids would struggle to make such a large and needed purchase elsewhere. ❤Kmart

I've got many memories of Kmart, but probably the clearest one is when I got separated from my mom, and I went to the customer service counter asking them for help. The lady got on the PA system and announced, "Will the parents of a little boy wearing a Tom & Jerry t-shirt that says 'If you can't beat 'em, bite 'em" come to the customer service desk?" Of course, the rest of my memories are mostly begging my parents for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures, cards, and books.

When I was in high school in the mid 70’s I worked at Kmart. It was my first job at 16 and I absolutely loved working there. I felt like a grown up wearing my turquoise smock. Back then we got paid in cash if you can imagine that. We received a pay envelope every Friday afternoon about 4:00 and inside was our net pay in cash with a stub showing all the deductions withheld. It was a smart move because we could spend it that day in the store. I have so many fond memories of working there.

I loved Kmart Layaway when I was a kid. I could pick out any of the bigger dollar toys I wanted and pay on it with my allowance over 2-3 trips, which we made just about weekly. I had every He-Man, Thunder Cat and Transformer toy that was ever made.

25 yrs ago, I would pick up something needed at K Mart on my lunch hour, and take the big bag of popcorn back to the office for my coworkers. Miss K Mart now.

Hey, @Copper_centAZ - I hear you on the popcorn. As a kid, it was one of my favorite things about Kmart. I guess my mom thought it was a small price to pay to keep me pacified in the cart while she did her shopping.

I will always remember when myself,my brother and friend,we were 11y or12y old and asked the lady at the cigar and pipe counter we like a package of withe owl cigars for my dad. She handed us the cigars and we gave her the money and she said don’t get too sick boys lol

I worked at a k-mart in Utah for 11 years ( I started in 1979) , I remember wearing that mint green smock & doing blue light specials 😂 ThankYou for the trip down memory lane 😊
