Exploring a 266 Year Old Fort of the French & Indian War | History Traveler Episode 103

Many Americans may be unaware that without the French and Indian War, there would have been no Revolutionary War. In this episode, we're traveling to central Maine to explore the site of Ft. Halifax, which holds the oldest surviving wooden blockhouse in the United States. And we try a lobster grilled cheese sandwich! Always learning!

Fort Halifax washed downstream in a flood and people went and found all the timbers and reconstructed it. This is very easy to get to. Another fort very close by where Benedict Arnold also went to is Fort Western in Augusta.

Lobster in Maine is low priced during the season and higher priced in the fall and winter. Although the availability raises and lowers the price too. You can sit waterfront in Maine and feast on lobster at a surprisingly low price. Yum!!!

If you're doing a trip up north you can drive south of Pittsburgh to Westmoreland and Fayette counties and hit 3 French and Indian war sites in one day. Fort Necessity, Bushy Run battlefield and Fort Ligonier all about an hour apart give or take. There is also Hannastown which was burnt by the Senecas in the 1780's. Of course you may be half way home by now.

One of my great grandfather's on my mother's side waaaay back was a famous guide and fighter during this war, we are M'ikmaq and we had a Big part in this fight ,and suffered greatly for our contribution to fight them after this battle /war was over.

Lobster used to be considered lesser meat-just ask Jim Gaffigan but here is a better source "But as railway travel spread in the late 1800s, train operators served lobster as if it were a luxury menu item to inland customers who didn’t know the “insect” food was considered trash.Through the 1940s, you could buy lobster in cans, like tuna or Spam, and it was just as inexpensive and inelegant. During World War II, lobster wasn't rationed and was shipped in cans to nourish soldiers on the front. In fact, lobster was cheaper than canned beans, and people fed it to their pets. But by the 1950s, lobster had regained its place on the menu of status symbols. Movie stars were photographed dining out on the delicacy. Restaurants began serving it as a treat. Prices rose."

I have just discovered your channel and have been binge watching it. You have a great show and I have really like the civil war series. I do have an idea for you. If you ever get to central New York state there is a reconstructed Revolutionary War fort in the city of Rome NY. It is most notable for the siege of Fort Stanwick where General Herkimer was would and died a few days later. The siege changed the the war by making the English change their mind on dividing the colonies. Rome NY was also the home of Griffiss Air Force base that housed B52's among other planes. You get two wars in one city.

There are monuments for the Revolutionary War all around the area and the Fort has a real nice museum and re enactors to explain the way of life back then. This area is known as the Mohawk Valley. And about 20 minutes away going west is the Oneida Indian Nation.

As usual, I really enjoyed this video. Just a suggestion on an old fort that ties to the 7 years war, but was never really used, however used heavily in the revolution. There's an old tabby wall fort and colonial village on the Ashley River, near Charleston South Carolina, Colonial Fort Dorchester. The fort and powder magazine (which was built and reenforced in the french and indian war), ruins remain there and visible for the most part. There's even an old church bell tower complete with old cemetery on the site. If you're ever looking for a cool filming location around the south, check this one out for sure. Be ready for a ton of history all around in Charleston though. You can spend several weeks there filming everyday and honestly only scratch the surface. Love your videos, love the channel. What market price in Maine means is The price per pound of real Maine lobster before taxes (and tips) can vary depending on a number of factors, including the size of the lobster, the time of year, and the location where you are buying it. Typically between $10.00-15.00 per lb. Thats what I found for research.

Lived in Portland for many years my little sister was born in Portland Maine...I live in Upstate New York in the mohawk valley right near the battle of the French /Indian war the movie ”drums along the Mohawk” is historically near my home,,,..you need to go to Fort Ticonderoga and Lake George...also troy, new york is the home of uncle Sam he is buried in oak wood cemetery in troy Ny , his name was Samuel Wilson...lots of history here in upstate Ny...

Thanks for taking us to the blockhouse. Very cool. However, that a restaurant in Maine is serving lobster in a sandwich with melted cheese is downright sacrilegious! You have not had lobster, pronounced lobstuh, until you have had a whole lobster, which you would you crack open and eat piece by piece dipped in drawn butter. If you ever go back to Maine, find out a ballpark market price beforehand and sacrifice whatever it takes to have a real lobster experience when you get there. It will be worth it!

The old blockhouse was a magnificent sight. The size of those timbers were huge, and the way it was put together, would make it last through the ages. I imagine they kept it locked to keep out the riff raff, better safe than sorry. I love lobster, but to high for my budget. My daughter bought me lobster for my birthday one year, and that was the last time LOL Enjoyed the tour, and see you next time.

There's a similar time period fort still in existence in MD called Ft Frederick. It's a stone fort from the F & I war period. Used during F & I war, sat for almost 100 years until the civil war, and then used again.

Actually George Washington started the French & Indian War all by himself. He was a Captain of militiamen and came upon Fort Necessity. It was occupied by French military. Washington’s men forced them to surrender and leave the area. It all snowballed after that. It is located just north of the Maryland border in South Western Pennsylvania. Fort Necessity is still there, it’s a National Monument.

@@TheHistoryUnderground I shared the link to the Ft. Pitt blockhouse on your Facebook page. It is from the same era but probably a little "younger". It is literally on the point in Pittsburgh, again at the confluence of two major rivers (forming the Ohio) as you mentioned in the video as to why it was so critical in the day. Fort Necessity and Braddock's grave is less than an hour and a half from there along the National Road (US Route 40). Believe it or not, lobster was originally considered to be food for the lower class. From what I remember, rich people decided they liked it, and there went the price, right through the roof. I get the imitation crab and lobster meat. It isn't exactly the same, but it's good enough mixed up into macaroni and cheese.

If you ever get to NH there is the Fort at #4 open museum on the Connecticut River. The fort has some pretty interesting history. I haven't been in many years, but it was always a cool place and it still is open as a museum.
