From a Leaf's fan, I have no clue how you have those Detroit teams that low, even with your explanation. They faced some tough teams (Colorado, Pens, Vancouver), and steam rolled through the playoffs. Lost 6/22 games in 2008 and 7/23 games in 2002. Meh to each their own but those were some of the most dominant teams, from players, to coaching to leadership. They had it all.

My Pens played their asses off against them that year but the Wings were just so damn good and experienced. I think playing SUCH a good, tough team like Detroit taught the Pens what it would take the next year, and Detroit had slipped a tad by then too. Those were both great series though

As a young Minnesota Wild fan who has unfortunately not had that satisfaction yet of saying that the wild are cup champs heres my opinion. Most impressive champs on that board 2018-19 St Louis Blues that was a special team to be down and out in December and start of January and then flip a switch win 11 in a row and then just have an excellent last half of the season was amazing and Binnington coming out of nowhere that was special to watch some of my favorite games of the stanley cup playoffs was from the 2019 season and some of them were blues games. That cup final against boston and the series against dallas was pure intensity and I enjoyed every moment of the 2nd round and the cup final

And being a penguins fan as my second team for the ladder half of about 8 years now and seeing them kinda going through the motions for the early 2010s and then winning in 2016 I was excited that was a good team but I thought 2017 was even better I enjoyed the finals against the preds wayyyy better and I gained some respect for the preds effort and I believe that those preds were a much stronger and tougher opponent than the sharks from just the year before, And that atmosphere of that nashville crowd CMON how can you not be entertained by that I thought it was so funny seeing the pens get absolutely run out of nashville for games 3 and 4 and seeing the crowd react to that was just awesome.

Consistently being outshot and they had a stretch in the finals where they didn't even get a shot on net for like 40 minutes (and they won that game). That run, ironically, is exactly why there's parity in the NHL. The Penguins should not have won the Cup in 2017, but they did.

I’m not quite sure what this video is. If it’s ranking the most talented cup champs then I agree with my caps ranking, right in the middle. But if it’s ranking the grueling path each team took and how impressive it was, then I would put the caps in the top 8 or top 5. Remember, they trailed every series. They went down 0-2 to the jackets and then won 4 straight. Tampa won 3 straight games and then we shut them out twice in a row. Then we kicked the Knights’ ass

On a different note, did anyone else get presented with a 40 minute ad by KZbin in the middle of this video? I want to support the vloggers, so I watch the ads. But, a 40 minute ad (and that’s in addition to all the other ads) for a 28 minute video is absurd. Back to back presidents trophy winners, best defense in the league by far, had to beat Salo, Fuhr, Roy and Hasek to lift cup, best goalies of that era. I’d put them somewhere between 10-20. Couple of thoughts from a Red Wings fan: First, I have a hard time hearing '98 Wings over '97 Wings for the sole reason that '97 had Konstantinov and '98 didn't. Second, and after hearing some of your banter in other videos, when you say "the whole Roy vs. Brodeur argument... and Hasek..." there's also the "and why Osgood is so far removed from that conversation for everyone." Third, I love the videos you do about the WIngs, and with the whole Covid-19 thing going on, I''m watching a lot of classic hockey games and I gotta tell ya, as for Wings goaltenders, of course the notables are Osgood, Hasek, and Vernon, but I'm watching a lot of old games with Cheveldae, and he was a lot better than I remembered (especially considering the era and the team that was in front of him.) I'd love to see you rank the Wing's goaltenders from 1980-now
@stevekendra8983
@stevekendra8983 4 жыл бұрын
As a Wings fan, I actually agree with Shannon on this. Not only is it hard to win back to back, as you said in 98 they didn't have Vladdy who was one of if not the most formidable defensemen in the league in the 90's. When you lose that caliber of player the way Vladdy was lost, it would be hard for any team mo matter how stacked the line up was to focus on the job. That drive, that determination to win it again for Vladdy and Sergei really fueled that 98 team. Dont forget we were without Vernon as well. Ozzy was amazing that year but his play was still a real unknown then. Without the leadership they had it would have been easy for the 98 Wings to fall off big time. They didnt though, and the rest is history.

@@stevekendra8983 good points about perseverance.I meant more that it just seems that the two teams were almost identical with a few exceptions, most notably Vlad. So to say the team without Vlad was more dominant than the team with him seems to undermine him, almost disrespectful (which I know Shannon isn't doing and that he holds Konstantinov in high regard, probably like me where if you ever need a good "clearing of your sinuses, just watch a clip of Stevie Y placing the cup in Vladdy's lap! Liam Kimberley uhh, I am not sure. That Wings team was before the rule changes and the Kings were after the changes. That Kings team was far more likely to have done extremely well in the clutch and hold dead puck era than the Wings were in 2012. Even the Wings had to make the adjustments to the new NHL before their runs in 08 and 09. I would also point out that the 02 Wings were a old team and the 12 Kings were young. Weren’t the Wings sporting a line called the 700 Line, where every player had 700 career goals? (Yzerman, Hull and Robitaille, if I remember correctly) As impressive as that was, its not exactly a sign of youth. I think the physicality of players like Brown, Richards and Doughty would have been a lot. Don’t forget, big hitting was a big part of the 12 run. Brown on Sedin (H. Sedin, if I remember), King’s hit on Pietrangelo, Brown on Rozsival in overtime for game 5 of the conference finals. (Winning shortly after) I think if you were talking the 02 Wings with all their players in their prime, sure. With the 02 Wings having the players they had at their stages in their careers, they become more middle of the road among SC winners. Maybe even vulnerable to a team that hits hard. Keep in mind, this is a team that went 16-4, 10-1 on the road which I think ties the NJ record in 95. Also, Quick has a 1.41 GAA and .946 save % (I’m pretty sure these are the best playoff goalie numbers ever, though I could be mistaken. Even more than Giguere’s Con Smythe year when he lost the Cup) This is compared to Hasek’s 1.86 GAA and .920 save %. (Numbers during the “Dead Puck Era”, a time Quick never played in) I’m not saying that Quick>Hasek, I’m saying 12 Quick> 02 Hasek. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to say that the 12 Kings would win. I mean, I think they may be closer. I even lean to the Kings winning but not disembowling the Wings. I think to say the Wings would disembowel the Kings is ignorant of the level of domination the Kings showed in the spring of 12.( a higher level of domination than the Wings showed in the 02 playoffs, I might add)

If strength of the teams roster skews things from 20 years ago then strength of opponent skews things post 06 era. Red Wings faced 2 legitimate cup contenders in 02 and beat them. Yes, the finals was against a regular season weaker team but in the playoffs that Canes team was a monster. I do get your POV but 02 Wings are too low even with your logic. Considering 16 pens had weaker opponents apart from the Caps it gets even weirder. And the 89 Flames? That almost choked in the 1st round vs the Canucks? What?

Have to disagree on where the '98 Wings are placed ... They caught a lot of breaks that year by playing the Stars and not the Avs, and steamrolled a Capitals team that overachieved. That team was just not as good as the previous year's team. The '97 team was dominant after game 4 against the Blues (minus game 5 against the Avs) and DESTROYED the heavily favored Flyers in the finals.

Typical Canucks fan In 89 Calgary was at that time was only the 2nd team to win the Presidents Trophy and The Stanley Cup with a total points of 117. So How can you rank that team in power rankings at 16. The 89 Flames should be top 5 at least. 1. 00 / 01 Avalanche President Trophy and Stanley Cup 118 regular Season points 2. 88 / 89 Flames President Trophy and Stanley Cup 117 regular season points 3. 01 / 02 Red Wings President Trophy and Stanley Cup 116 regular season points 4. 07 / 08 Red Wings President Trophy and Stanley Cup 115 regular season points 5. 98 / 99 Stars President Trophy and Stanley Cup 114 regular season points 6. 93 / 94 Rangers President Trophy and Stanley Cup 112 regular season points 7. 86 / 87 Oilers President Trophy and Stanley Cup 106 regular season points True power rankings How can you argue there have been only 8 teams to accomplish The President Trophy most points regular season and win the Stanley Cup in league history Also There are only 4 teams that have higher total points regular season President Trophy winners since 89 Calgary tied with 2 other teams with 117

The argument that he used for the 92 Pens and the 2015 Haws was very similar. All good though, opinions are opinions. I think it was just how much of a forgone conclusion of the Wings winning that year as long as they got past the Avs. I wonder how many more cups those two teams would have gotten if they didn't have to play each other.

I feel like everyone is misunderstanding this video. This is not about who is the "best" team, it's about how impressive the path they got there was. For example, us NJ Devils fans would consider strength of rosters of teams to be 1. 2000, 2. 2003, 3. 1995 (with 2001 as everyone's favorite if they had won!). But the 2003 team finished #2 in the East, played one true top team (#1 Ottawa), one Cinderella story (Anaheim) and two teams 15 to 21 points bellow them in the standings. On the other hand 2000 played the defending Cup champions Stars, came back down 3-1 against the Flyers (#1 team in the East), took down a 100 point Toronto team and swept a strong 98 point Panthers team. Even more impressive, the 1995 Devils were #5 in the East, while defeating #4 Boston & #3 Pittsburgh in 5 games a piece, outmatched the Legion of Doom #2 Flyers then swept the Presidents Trophy winning Detroit Red Wings.

Hoping to see the 2014 Kings higher. Yes we knew what they were capable of, but they were only a 6 seed, overcame a 3-0 deficit in round 1, and won 3 straight game 7s on the road, including an unforgettable double-OT game 7 in Chicago to cap off one of the greatest playoff series of the 2000s. To be fair the Final was comparatively anti-climactic.

That 08 wings team outclassed the pens badly. As a frustrated 16 year old pens fan at the time, I couldn’t believe how it seemed like the Wings won every puck battle and shut down the pens top 6 in the neutral zone time and time again. We got outplayed in the 09 final as well, but thankfully Jordan Staal existed in games 3 and 4 and Brad Stuart existed in game 7 (sorry for the PTSD if you’re a wings fan lol). I’d say that order should be flipped.

I MASSIVELY disagree about the 2002 Red Wings. All of their Western Conference opponents were very formidable. Vancouver with the West Coast Express line as an OPENING round team? That was a very good eighth seed, and after an admittedly slow start, the Red Wings went right through them in six. They also only took five games to go through St. Louis with Chris Pronger, who was only two years off a Hart Trophy. They also took out a defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado in a tough series, but a 7-0 win in Game 7. Carolina was a fairly weak Stanley Cup Final opponent. Probably the stronger team from the East that year would have been Boston or Toronto. But they still went through them in five. It was never really in doubt. This, on top of the fact that the team has 10 Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers and also ran through the regular season as a one seed, with 15 more points than the next highest team in the entire league. That's unique even by the standards of Cup champions.

I actually STATED in this very video I didn't care how many hall of fame talents were on a roster because that weighs against recent champs and then you have to factor in whether those HOF players were all primary reasons for the win.
@BloggerMusicMan
@BloggerMusicMan 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHockeyGuy Fair enough. I think the criteria of how much elite talent is on the roster is actually extremely relevant though. Even if you don't factor in Hall of Fame per se, you can still compare Pietrangelo and Tarasenko and compare them to Messier and Coffey, even if those two St. Louis Blues aren't yet in the Hall of Fame. It's a fun list that's ultimately subjective in the end, but as a hockey fan, I was a little surprised by the Red Wings being that low. It's great to get a reply from you by the way. I really like your channel. :)

the 2002 Detroit Red Wings should be #1. I don't understand how "strength of schedule" in the playoffs takes them down. They beat the 2nd and 4th best teams in the Western Conference playoffs (Colorado, and St. Louis) as well as the HOTTEST team coming into the playoffs (Vancouver) Vancouver was 24-9-3 in their last 36 games, and 13-2-1 in their last 16 heading into the Playoffs. Colorado had the second most wins in the NHL in 2001-02, and St Louis was tied for 4th most. Along with being the most talented team, they had to get through a TOUGH Western Conference.....

I'm obviously biased, but with Detroit in 2002, they went 0-for-April and lost games 1 and 2 to Vancouver before flipping the switch and playing to their potential of Hall of Fame hockey. And in 2008 when Chris Osgood takes over for Hasek and wins his second Cup ten years after his first. (has anyone else ever had multiple Cups over 10 years beside Roy?) Those are great stories, but I agree the teams were so good that in hindsight, winning the Cup wasn't a shock. But 1998! C'mon! They lose Konstantinov and Vernon, and still repeat?!

That 01 Avs team I think should be higher, they lost one of best players in the world (Peter Forsberg), had to best a good St Louis team in 5 games and than they took out the defending Stanley cup champs with hall of famers like Scott Stevens, Scott Neidermayer, Martin Brodeur, Patrick Elias, Alexander Mogilny. Those are the hall of famers I can think of, but New Jersey had great players like Bobby Holik, Scott Gomez Petr Sykora, John Madden, Ken Daneyko.
