Brett Hull did it in '91-'92. He had 70 goals for St. Louis. No one else on the team had more than 69 points. Ovechkin was close to doing this in '05-'06 and '07-'08.

To note: That's 7 short handed goals when there was still a two line pass rule. THAT IS INSANE. Just imagine if Bure had played after the two line pass rule was removed? I remember the first time I saw him on the ice. I think Bernie Pascal was the sports guy for CHEK and they showed Bure on the ice during a practice. He was skating with a parachute behind him (resistance training on skates, basically). Then that first game (against the Jets?), when he was fed for a breakaway. He BLEW through the d-men and got to the net so fast that he barely had time to take a good shot. Didn't score that time, but holy hell was that exciting. I think he's one of the very few players I've ever seen basically get a breakaway in the O-zone while ALL of the opposing team was in the zone (Canucks powerplay I think). It was a game against the Devils where the Canucks were IN the Devils' zone and Bure waterbugged around everyone and was suddenly in all alone on the goalie - he scored.

McDavid will never equal that, because he's too valuable in other game states to run out there on the PK. Nuge is the Oiler mainstay 4v5. Curiously, Drai is the current Oiler mainstay 3v5, despite hardly ever playing 4v5. You don't get many shorties 3v5, no matter what your wheels. Actually, there are a couple of reels on KZbin of 3v5 goals, each one followed by a comically small group hug. Mike Richards was the king of 3v5 apparently. Philly must have played two men short for half the game. No possible idea how or why that might have happened ...

All Finns will remember Bure from Nagano olympics in 1998 when we had a chance to get gold. We will have a better team in Beijing but back then, we had Lehtinen-Saku Koivu-Selänne. We will never have a line like that again. In the semifinals, Pavel Bure scored 4 goals on all 4 breakaways plus an empty netter and singlehandedly sent us to the bronze game game where we beat Gretzky. Russia's unstoppable scoring machine was completely shutout in the finals by who else, Dominik Hasek.

My very first live Canucks game was against Calgary in 1998. It was the game he scored his 50th goal and during the celebration, the jumbotron flashed a montage of his goals during the season up to number 50. It was amazing for 10 year old to witness.

So after the 1994 Canucks Cup run, rumour had it that Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure, and Gino Odjick flew into my hometown in secret to go fishing. Kitimat is right on the ocean, and is a pretty good fishing spot. I asked Gino in person if this happened. Gino answered in a humorous way. You are talking to a guy who has had a lot of head injuries, but yes I remember going fishing here in Kitimat with Pavel and Trevor.

The 1992-93 season was abnormally full of career years, hence why Bure's 60 goals only got him 5th place in the league. It's a very interesting year to do a deep dive into.

There was 84 game season that certainly contributed as well as the new era of NHL expansion with San Jose Sharks in 1991, with Ottawa and Tampa landing in 1992. More commercial breaks meant more revenue and gave elite players more resting time between shifts. Definitely an anmolous season that should be asterixed as "unusual."

One thing people don't often talk about is his composure. He scored goals with incredible patience at times, waiting for defensemen and goalies blink first. He would also score by trying things most would only do in practice or at a beer league level. And he did so at full speed.

I remember the 98 Olympic semi win over Finland, Russia won 7-4 and nobody could live with Bure, he was awesome at a time when his career was beginning to suffer due to his knees. Great player, so sad he didn't last. It's odd that teams (not just the Canucks) struggled to accommodate the Soviet era guys, almost like they ignored these guys leaving there own country (often illegally) and couldn't understand when they then had trouble adapting.

Obviously when you think of Bure you think speed first but his hands were incredible and then throw in his strength on the puck and you have a unique skill set. Opposing players would be left as spectators as the Rocket took over games. His 1990-91 Upper Deck French Hi Number Rookie Card is still one of my favorites of all-time.

One of my alltime favorite players for sure. He had the ability to make you forget space and time when he took off. While Gretzky, Lemieux and Mcdavid were and is better, they all got this wow effect that makes you excited watching night after night not matter what the score is.

When he was good, he was reeeally good. He could score goals with the best of them. He had elite puck handling skills, speed, speed, and more speed. And he mixed in a little edge to his game too. I wish he could have played in the modern NHL in his prime. He would be fighting for the Rocket every year he was healthy. And Pavel was his own man too. He certainly had a backbone.

I was fortunate to share 2 of the best season seats at the Colosseum during Pavel's first few seasons in the league. He was without a doubt, the most exciting player who I got to watch play live. The Mogilny experiment was highly disappointing, but, then they got Messier!

That 2000-01 season from Bure was just ridiculous. 59 goals with 92 points.....and the next best player on his team was Kozlov with 37 points. He had 55 MORE POINTS THAN THE NEXT BEST. His 59 goals....Kozlov's 14 were the next best. 45 more goals than his next best teammate. 45!!! That is just insane. Florida games that year were basically the Pavel Bure Panthers.

I was a little after Bure's time but after seeing his highlights, I was amazed by his deep knee mobility and strength as well as explosive legs early on. I wouldn't be surprised if he helped set a standard for skating capability.

There was that IIHF world championship in St Petersburg, year 2000. Russia brought in a stacked roster with Bure as the crown jewel and supporting cast included guys like Yashin, Kozlov, Gonchar, Markov. The goal was to finally win this championship after 7 years of defeats. After an 8-1 win over France Russia managed to lose to Switzerland, Latvia and Belarus and didn't qualify to the playoffs. Overall it was 11th place in the standings.

I'll never forget Bure and the '98 Olympic tournament. Semi-final, Finland vs. Russia. It had been less than a decade since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Russian team already had a reputation as divas who could not really play effectively as a team. Sure enough, they didn't play that well that night. Except Bure. He scored 5 goals in that game. He'd get the puck deep and you would know he would score yet again by the time he crossed the red line. The Finns just could not stop him. What an amazing player. In the gold medal game Hasek finally stopped him.

Bure is one of the first guys that got me excited about hockey before I committed to my hometown Avs (alongside Kariya, Hasek)

Still remember the Canucks giving the Avs all they had in 96. At one point they almost had a 3-2 lead. The Avs were able to come back and win in OT 5-4 and then win 3-2 in game 6.

I remember Sports Page sent someone down to LA where Bure was working out, before he was allowed to sign here. I remember him holding a Canuck sweater up and saying "I hope to play for this team soon". Then he did. And boy did he ever!! Electrifying.

It sucks to see guys who should've played more games, but had injury problems and such. Imagine how many more goals and points guys like Bure, Bossy, and Lemieux would've had if they all played like 1200 games. Man.

I live in BC and in the early to mid 90's, Bure was THE guy. Every kid playing road hockey was Bure, every kid wanted jersey #10, he completely changed hockey in Vancouver. Great player, fun to watch, but he became a handful towards the end, partly due to management and coaches, but he did bring some of it on himself. I always thought it was funny Gillis got the Canucks best player ever traded out of town, and was made GM later on.

I think teemu and mcdavid have shown to have faster top end speed. But nobody had a faster first few strides with the puck than bure. He was the definition of lighting in a bottle.

I agree with you. His place among his class and peers may be due to the fact that Detroit had The Russian 5, and they went on to 2 Stanley Cups before the end of the decade. Had Bure played on a Cup winning team and been awarded the Conn Symthe trophy, he would have had more accolades near the end of his career. It does not help that at this point in NHL history, you have another Russian mega-star forward on the brink of shattering a long held career goal record. If you put Bure on Colorado's roster at the start of the 1998-99 season, I am sure Colorado wins 2 more cups and Bure(if healthy and plays 2 full seasons) is remembered above Fedorov, Yashin, Larinov, or any other 90's Russian star.

Bure definitely deserves to be in the HOF because he was truly one of the most dominant (top five) players in his playing days.
