Digital ads is just the result of the game being caught up with the times/technology, there are many digital overlays on many other sports such as NFL, Soccer, etc. I'd say the digital ads are the least intrusive cause at least they aren't doing NHL 24 style on-ice overlays for their ads. The gambling ads, I agree.

A few of them for me that you left out: 1) Guy has a shot but seems to only look pass (especially if he's a linemate of Ovi) or waiting for the "perfect shot" opportunity, rather than just taking an open shot that at least has a chance of going in or being redirected or creating a rebound to be poked in 2) Players giving up on a play. Even if you "know" there's no chance, yes there is. The guy you are chasing down could hit a rut or lose an edge. The pressure of you chasing could cause them to panic and shoot/pass sooner than they need to. The goalie could make a miraculous save and you might've put yourself in a position to clean up the rebound. The goalie might give up a juicy rebound and if you'd continued to the net you could poke it in. 3) When they are talking about a play, either a goal, a penalty, or something being reviewed, and take forever to show the replay. A lot of those are bang-bang that you miss or don't fully appreciate in real time. I get sometimes it takes a minute to cue up the right angle or they want to wait for the ref to signal something. But, I've watched games where they had a challenge and there's five minutes of the commentators speculating and no replay shown. Or, a goal is scored or penalty committed behind the play, and they don't show the replay until after a commercial break. 4) The puck over the glass delay of game penalty. I honestly it causes more delays in the game than it eliminates. 5) Lazy penalties. Not simply bad penalties or poorly timed ones, but those ones you can see the guy committed because he wasn't concentrating on controlling his stick or didn't want to try and chase someone (especially if there are still other defenders who could recover for him). 6) Excessive homerism. I don't mind an announcer being a homer, in general. Especially on a local broadcast, where they are following the team for years and speaking mostly to fans of the team. But, some announcers are very "my team can do no wrong, the other team can do no right." I also have a little less tolerance for favoritism when it's a national broadcast. 7) Announcers complaining about the refs. It's one thing to disagree with a specific call, especially in the moment. But, I've heard broadcasters go on and on about how many calls a ref missed or how important one missed call was. And, like, unless the ref completely loses control of the game, just stop. Yes, they miss calls. Honestly, as long as a ref is relatively consistent in how they are calling a specific penalty that game, that matters more to me than perfection. 8) "You can't call that there." Nonsense. There is no situation that should change how a game is called. A penalty you'd call in a preseason game should be called in a 5-0 blowout in November should be called in the final minute of a 2-2 game 7 of the final. Refs are not "deciding the game" by calling a penalty, and the rules don't change based on which period it is, how much time is left in the period, or whether it's the regular season or playoff. 9) Interviews in the locker room. They're never interesting, it feels like a violation. Just wait a few minutes, show the highlights, let them change, and interview them once they've had time to come down from the game. 10) Any time anyone invokes "unwritted rules" or "unwritted codes." I they're not written, they're not the rules, and I find the way they are "policed" far more obnoxious than the violaions, generally.

@tinyb694 ай бұрын
I'm only at #2 and I'm already calling you out. Throw it down the boards is from your childhood indoctrination to "Grapes", beating that into your head on Coaches Corner. Typically, yes, that is the best move, and almost always the safe out. Strangely, Cherry never held Booby Orr to that one hard and fast rule. He was allowed to get it out in anyway he wanted to, without question. But, we're taking Bobby Orr, here, the greatest Defenseman to ever play the game. Maybe he was given a little more leeway than most people would have. Meanwhile, the whole time that Grapes was preaching his "drive it hard and high out the boards", there was this guy in Montreal, his name was Scotty Bowman, maybe you've heard of him. He's the winningest coach in NHL history. He was teaching his guys, to look for that seam pass out the middle, and to keep possession of the puck, and to keep the puck towards the center of the ice, where higher percentage shots are taken from. I'm pretty sure that we can see who's idea has prevailed over time, as kids today are taught to look for that middle out first, before resorting to using the boards to get the puck out. Of course, there is one other reason why going out the middle is becoming the method being used today, is that stupid Over the Glass, Delay of Game penalty, that gets dished out every time the puck goes up and over those boards whether intentional or not. How many times have you seen a puck go into the high dollar seats because it took a bad bounce off the boards, or just jumped off of the D-mans stick. Myself, I get way more pissed off about seeing those penalties than I do about watching a bonehead giveaway while going out the middle. But that's just like my opinion man, you are fully allowed to have your own and express it as you feel you must.

1. Turnovers resulting in the game-tying goal can be worse than turnovers leading to OT winners, especially if the team that gave up the lead in the dying seconds of regulation goes on to lose in OT or SO. 2. Always going to be frustrating as a fan to see that. Put it off the boards, maybe it'll deflect into the nearest bench for a whistle. 3. Momentum killer, especially if it results in a game misconduct and a possible suspension for the guilty player. 4. Goalies need to stay focused, especially after an extended shift in the offensive zone for the players in front of him. 5. Too Many Men calls happen frequently because of this. Also, remember that one time the Oilers were on the PK and all 4 skaters went off on a change, leaving their goaltender at the mercy of the other team? 6. Debatable at times. Yeah, if a player commits a turnover or misses his assignment that leads to a goal against is a cause for concern. But if he also forced a turnover or scored after getting himself wide open earlier in the game, shouldn't those off-set? 7. Glad Edwards retired, I don't think there was a commentator more biased than he was in recent memory out of the 4 major North American sports leagues. 8. This can apply to referees as well, to some extent. If you're a broadcaster, watch the game. 9. Baseball and maybe football are the only sports where it's okay to have interviews while the play is going on because not much happens for a good chunk of the game. And when something does happen they'll have their eyes turned to the play. 10. Detroit vs New Jersey anyone? The game where Detroit scored by a goal shortly after injuring a NJ player to the point where he needed attention to by the trainer?

Talking about guys who get blamed/benched for allowing goals. I think it's part of the idea called "loss avoidance" that comes from the book Scorecasting. It's a great view into the real life approach to sports. Most people don't actually go for the win, they avoid the loss. It's like going for the extra point in football, where statistics show that you'll actually be better off by going for the 2-pts every time instead of the PAT.

What burns me the most is when my team sets up defensively in their own zone and stops trying to get the puck back. Basically standing there 5 on 5 watching the other team pass the puck as if they're on a power play. That's when I tell whoever is there with me 'Well we're about to give up a goal'. And usually we do give up a goal. Yes, it's the Red Wings I'm talking about. I also hate when they repeatedly cross check the guy with the puck along the boards. Rather than put their stick down and try to get the puck, they'll keep jabbing the guy in the back until he just skates away with the puck to another area of ice and usually finds a good pass recipient.

I knew I had just made a huge pile of money, but I was overtaken with emotion and I lost it. I cried like a fool and I was almost traumatized. My sister is a doctor of psychology and she ''diagnosed'' me (on her back patio, not her office) with PTSD that is triggered by when my B's are tied in the last 10 minutes of the game, and when they go in overtime. I can’t ever recall a nationally broadcasted game where a penalty occurs during the game and one of the analysts complains about a miscall of the same infraction occurring earlier during the game.

yeah, constant crosschecking.... me too

The pass up the middle in your own zone always baffled me. How many times have players, since they laced up their first pair of skates, have they been told not to do it. A friend of mine explained it to me, he said, “they’re not thinking about that, they’re thinking, I did this once before and it worked.” Hockey players are not math wizards, coaches say don’t make low percentage plays, hockey players say, “what?”

Goalies that go out their net to intercept the puck behind their net when the puck is going at glass height level. Often, the puck changes direction when it's at glass level.

...it seems like in the 90s, goalies used to come out of the net ALL the time to play the puck, and it blows up in their faces.

I think the one I would add is watching national broadcasts, and they obviously did not do any research on the teams whatsoever. The one that always comes to mind was watching an NBC broadcast and the commentators talking about how Justin Abdelkader had been so key to the Red Wings so far that season. It was a season where the organization had been feeling the pain of that insane contract he had where his production had taken a dive into the dumpster. He wasn't even providing great off puck work. His game was actively dying.

As an IIHF hockey fan, media / play by play who think we only watch IIHF (men's) tournaments because we want to know how the players will do in the NHL. Some of us actually watch the WJC, U18 and Worlds to enjoy the hockey and to cheer for our country.

Bad penalties during a comeback: If the team you are rooting for is coming back in the third period and they take a stoopid penalty. Jamie Benn comes to mind.... just felt the need to crosscheck this guy while my team is dominating play... just dumb Or... forgetting how to play in the second period - Carolina does this a lot. They come out in the 1st and dominate and then in the second, they stop playing and the other team takes a lead into the third. And then, they have have to push in the third to get it to OT. Blah... But my all time fav... wide open chance to shoot and we're going to pass it to someone that is covered by two defensemen and they have to force a shot.... What?!? The?!? F***?!?

I absolutely hate goalie coming out to play the puck.. a lot of times it ends poorly

-Teams "silent agreement" playing for OT/SO in the 3rd, trying not to lose rather than to win. I get it, but I still don't like it. -Teams leaving the offensive zone in 3-on-3 OT and carrying or passing the puck back into the neutral zone or even their own defensive end. I think it should be a 2-minute DOG penalty.

When Ed Olczyk says: “second chance opportunity.” Unfortunately, now everybody says it. Its redundant. In the old days it was called “a rebound”

I love Mickey Redmond but he is definitely guilty of having story time go to long on occasion.

I think I yell “shooot the damn puck !!!” At least 18 times a game. The overpassing is exasperating. That and “DROP THE PUCK ALREADY!” These linesman insisting on a perfect puck drop, but wave off icing from a shot obviously on the defensive side of the red line. 😡 Old man rant over.

Hey THG, I hate when players try to clear the puck through the middle of the own zone instead of pushing the puck into the corner. The amount of times a clear through the middle leads to a turnover/shot attempt/goal is so frustrating. Sweep the puck into the corner, fight from the corner to get a clear or fight in the corner long enough to set back up defensively.

Carey Price could've scored a end to end goal without the trapezoid and red line rules...He was one of Montreals best puck handlers.
