The Walker Cup (the amateur Ryder Cup) was donated by one George Herbert Walker. Yes, they're related (Poppy's grandfather)

1973 The WHA Whalers played in the Boston Gardens up against the Bruins and AHL Boston Braves home dates and decided to move to Hartford afterwards however waiting for the Hartford Civic Center to be constructed they played at West Springfield Mass Coliseum in western Mass. approx. 30 miles north of Hartford. With a capacity of 5.500 seats it was the home of Eddie Shores AHL Springfield Kings/ Indians who were then affiliated to the L.A. Kings.. The old barn was the best arena in my life to ever attend a game because it was a cozy building where you were up close to the players and players walked the mat thru the fans to dressing rooms with no rope or any barricades. You could actually talk to the players on their way to and from dressing room. It was a great hockey era to be a fan in Massachusetts.

Habs tried to get Denis Potvin in a tempting (qood quick-fix) trade for the Islanders. Thankfully the GM Bill Torrey refused. I bet he was like "Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Montreal ain't robbing another top prospect"

Poor Seals.Everything is against them.Missing out on great talents,bad management,white skates and changing names so many times.They just couldn't get a grip on being good and when they started to get out of the basement,they moved to Cleveland.Poor Seals,they couldn't get out of the basement.

This is was a good year also. Habs line of Big M, Coco Lemaire and The Roadrunner was flying. I always said that was best line Montreal ever had. I remember Robinson called up that year and scored overtime goal in playoffs. Big M scoring his 500 career goal against Dunc Wilson also. Buffalo gave Montreal a decent battle in playoffs I remember though.

Habs had Seals pick that year by the way. They traded it down for extra first pick in'74 draft, because Tom Lysiak didn't want to play in MOntreal. Which ended up being Bob Gainey. Rumours had it Sam Pollock offered the 2nd overall and rest of his '73 draft picks, plus two players off his roster to Islanders for pick to select Denis Potvin. But Islanders wouldn't trade.

I had no idea Mickey Redmond was a first team all-star for Detroit in '73 - Thanks Shannon, that little hockey fact will be stuck in my head forever as a Wings fan :) I may have to go back and check the other history videos again, but I think Redmond might be the first Detroit Right Winger to earn an all-star team selection *SINCE* Gordie Howe... ?

I understand wanting to choke out the competition, but for hockey being such a small market outside of Canada I would think a partnership/merger would've been more effective long term... But obviously that's not how it happened and here we are with 31, almost 32 teams in the league with only a few clubs failing fiscally. So wadda I know lol

J Sullivan let's put together a beer league and throw 17 million dollars annual contracts at a few NHL veterans for credibility, unretire a Datsyuk type or two with more boatloads of money for curiosity, get Geico to sponsor our cup trophy to our championship team, save 15% on our car insurance, and then challenge the Capitals! ;) I'm sure the NHL would totally go for it.

Had California ended up with the first overall pick they would have traded it to Montreal for magic beans and the Habs dynasty would have gone on for longer. Bill Torrey actually worked for the Seals and one reason he was so committed to building through the draft is because he saw the long-term damage trading away picked caused. Montreal went after Potvin hard.

California has 3 teams as a state. San Jose reps the Bay Area that Oakland did. I think Atlanta will always be attractive as a major tv market, I believe top 10. The issue is they need ownership and a team to get people excited. You never know for Atlanta.

Atlanta has always been a terrible pro sports town. It won't work. If the NHL wants another big southern team, Houston or San Antonio are better locations

Atlanta FC seems to be doing well. If you know more about the Falcons and Braves failures please tell me as I would like to be educated. Houston seems to be a market that the NHL might want to explore.
