The truth hurts, and I think you nailed it - largely - about the state of the Bruins currently. One point that is grossly overlooked is how much they over achieved last year. They had a really easy schedule to open the season and all of their bargain basement signings (Geekie, Heinan, van Riemsdyk, et al.) performed well beyond expectations, as did Coyle, Frederic and Zacha. For that - and the deadline signings the year before (Orlov, Bertuzzi, and Hathaway), Sweeney deserves a lot of credit and maybe a little of breathing room (for now) as GM. I do think Monty is a good coach in the right situation, but I'm not sure he's going to move to another team and win a cup right away like Bruce did. Monty was gifted a team with generational talent in his first year and could not get out of the first round, and he has to answer for that. If he had been able to make a deep run that year he'd still have a job. A lot of Bruins' fans. - myself included - look at that year as a tremendous miss, and he has to own that. I don't think that Sacco is the answer, so I'll be interested to see who they get - will Quenneville be in the mix?

Jim Montgomery is definitely the last scapegoat for Don Sweeney. Bruins have been floated by unbelievable goaltending the last couple seasons and now that Swayman is falling from Godhood to just really good the team in front of him can't back him up with finishing or defense. I imagine Don Sweeney is probably gone at the end of this season and the Bruins retool will start this offseason.

I think I can speak for the entire Leafs Nation when I say that I hope like hell that it can't be fixed! Joking (maybe) aside, problem wasn't Jim Montgomery - it was the collective talent of the Bruins' roster that he had to coach. And you, Shannon, hit the nail right on the head - the lack of depth scoring and the lack of a true Number One centre. Let's face it: any of Boston's centremen would be on the third line on many teams - Florida, the Rangers, Colorado, Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina, Winnipeg, and Dallas all come to mind. On paper, I think the Bruins have a decent goaltending tandem and a better than average defense core when healthy. Unfortunately for Boston's fans, both groups haven't played anywhere near their potential this season and it shows. Quite honestly, I'm not sure this edition of the Bruins can be fixed. If they try the trade route, who on their team can they trade to get some more secondary scoring? Maybe get lucky via the waiver wire? If I were to hazard a guess on how they can turn things around, my only thought is for them to take a defense-first approach combined with forechecking like crazy when the puck is in the opponent's end of the ice in the hope they create scoring chances from turnovers.

Promoting Sacco to Head Coach only shows these two idiots think they're still competitive and everything will be fine as long as they bury their heads in the sand. The power play is abysmal and promoting Sacco (who was the Power Play coach) is a terrible idea. Not to mention that Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov have been quite awful this season (especially with Zadorov taking a penalty every 5 seconds). The Boys Club remains intact, Jacobs turns a blind eye, and now the wheels are finally falling off the wagon. Honestly, this has been a long time in the making.

20 seconds in and I can't agree more. Jim Montgomery was not the problem. Look at the his previous seasons with Boston(play offs aside); Phenomenal. Boston has become another year older without a true infusion of young talent or real superstar signings to replace Bergeron, Krejci, Chara, hell even Krug(im looking at you PP1 unit). I think Mcavoy, Pasta and now Swayman have started to erode the Boston Culture. Hopefully in a couple years when the cap goes up their contracts will look like steals but short term, Boston would really miss those "team friendly" deals to sign the right guys and stay competitive. I also think losing Debrusk was a mistake. Lindholm or not, Debrusk was an actual top 6 winger that had the offense when needed, streaky yes, but I'll take 30 goals streaky over what Lindholms on pace for 10? 15? As the number 1 center? Or is Zacha the number 1? or is it Coyle? All three of em seem like 3rd or 2nd line centers at best on any other team. Ok rant over, I don't like this move. If you want to fire Montgomery then you better bring in a totally different coach with a different view on how the Bruins should play. A new voice coaching the same system is not gonna fix this team rn. Aside from roster moves they need a different system. Barring a St. Louis run Boston is toast this year so all I can hope is they don't make the playoffs so that way they actually change something instead of more middling playoff results Edit: I am a real Bruins fan and I do not believe.

On paper, I don't think the roster got worse from the previous season except in goaltending. And Korpisalo is arguably having a better season than Ullmark so far. So the question on my mind this past month has been: Did Montgomery make a mediocre team good last season? Or is he making a good team mediocre this season? Maybe the answer is somewhere in between. Some of these guys are underperforming to an unprecedented degree. Coyle in particular could be excused for losing some of last season's offense, but even his defense, which he's more known for, has been atrocious this year. On the other hand, Montgomery seemed to keep employing strategies that weren't working. Especially on the power play. Every single team knows they're going to try and set Pastrnak up in that same spot by the dot. Also, they insist on using the god-awful backwards pass in the neutral zone, which usually give the penalty killers time to set up, clogs the offensive blue line, and results in a turnover. Another weird thing I've noticed is that they love to slow things down when it's completely unnecessary. I've seen it happen on a number of 2-on1s that turned into 2-on-2s because the puck carrier slowed down or took a serpentine route. These are coaching issues for sure. One other thing about Montgomery this season was his strange messaging. He talks about Lysell not getting a chance because his defense isn't there... meanwhile, the Bruins are one of the worst defensive teams in the league and pay Pastrnak 11 mil/year to float around the offensive blue line or line up his usual shot while giving virtually no back check. Might as well give Lysell a chance because they are in dire need of some speed and I doubt he'll be a -10 like Trent Frederick...

Finally get enough spending money to go to the games. I’m so happy I can now go. I’ve now been to three games this year and they’ve lost at every one of them including last night. It hurts lol. At least I got to see Jim Montgomery for the last time behind the Bruins bench? 😐

I'm at a loss... Yes Monty inherited end of the "Bergy era" and then last years team that was half AHL players getting to the second round. Do we credit Monty for these two years? Maybe the 2nd year you could make a case for it. I was optimistic that adding decent players would help to solidify the team a bit. It has been the complete opposite response. PIM's through the roof, Monty never keeping lines together long enough to build chemistry and confidence with each other. Always new lines every game.... and even in the game, it's kind of crazy. I can't even tell you who's on what line with this team this year. Monty was clearly going to be the scapegoat regardless. Don Sweeney has a lot to answer for.

The only hope i have to salvage the season is over the past 2 weeks the effort and compete were just not there. Too many games they just gave up. If Sacco can get that out, then they have a chamce for playoffs. But something with the players isn't right and i dont think the coach was the main problem.
@TheVTRainManАй бұрын
Sweeny built a big slow team to play a fast skating system against fast competition. Monty could switch the lines around until hell froze over and it doesn't change the speed or the talent on the ice. Zadorov was a disaster of a move, Swayman not being signed before trading Ulmark was idiotic, and expecting Lindholm to be a Bergeron is a pipe dream. I don't see Sweeny being immune by end of season.

@The_Great_WhodiniАй бұрын
Last night I was literally thinking they would be so dumb to fire montgomery, he isnt the problem. Theres no scoring depth, theres a crumbling defense, the special teams is terrible because there are not enough offensive threats or defensive anchors. Don Sweeney has set this team up for failure after bergy and krejci left... The successful seasons have been a combo of solid players and excellent coaching, the coach isnt making the signings to ensure sustainability, thats the GM... Bruce cassidy gets fired then wins the cup, so he wasnt the issue. Monty comes in and brings in a new culture and strategy leading them to 65 wins. Last year everyone was expecting a flop of a year, and his coaching made the most of what he had, and now this year its completely collapsing.

Habs fan here -- Not surprising that the coach is the one paying the price. Dont get me wrong, he made his share of mistakes BUT he isnt the one that signed Lindholm and offered him that insane contract. If I were a Bruins fan (and just like you THG, I want them to be at the top and have a good team because it make our rivalry so much more enjoyable) I would start looking at Sweeney. Why not try to get Bergevin in? Yeah he wasnt a perfect DG but I truly believe that he can do a much better job than Sweeney. Its obvious that the 7th floor is just trying to save faces at this point. And theres rumors that Im seeing online (please someone confirm if its true or no) that Hugues is actually a good friend of Montgomery and the Habs might potentially be interested in giving him a call... I dont think this is gonna happen though as MSL is still relatively young and is trying to implement his own style so it would kinda be a slap in his face and a disrespectful thing to just let him go at this point bu yeah.. Not sure if that would be a good idea since I dont know if his hard-coaching style would be a good fit with a young Habs team but I would at least consider my options.
